As a long time Pink Floyd fan I love this tribute to the original, it is the best cover version I have ever heard of a PF song.
I always think the original PF song is full of melancholy, whereas I think this one has more anger and bitterness (not surprisingly given that all 4 members on stage are about to fire Tarja).

What I love about this is that Empuu did not try to be David Gilmour...he just did him and boy did it fit beautifully.

and Jukka had a migraine induced by stress and insomnia! You can see Tuomas make a sideways nod to Emppu to check on him early on. Later you see Emppu jump down again.
@@damienmaynard8892 I saw Tuomas' move as well. You're the only that I know, who saw that too. I read many times people telling that at this concert Jukka didn't have problems... Anyway, I think you're right! 🤗
@@michael.albinus They all had problems - more than most other times. Firing Tarja because of her fiance. There was an interview where Jukka was asked about it. All he said was yep and Emppu's face was very serious. I wish I could find the link again.
Marco has been the lead singer / bassist of his and his brothers band Tarot from the 80's to present. Also Marco did do a "solo" album recently.
Happy 2023 everyone! This was fabulous and moving! Can't believe how Jukka managed. Amazed (again) at Marko's stunning voice and talent, and this sublime performance. Also loved 'seeing' all of ya again on the live chat. Great community! Also, to any who did not yet listen to it, I recommend Floor's "invincible"! It is wow!)
Marco did some "acting" when he was on the Finnish version of "The Masked Singer"...he was a "mad scientist/doctor" on it..and he WON the season. I think some of hisperformances on the show are on YT.

You have to look at 'Raskasta Joulua' a yearly metal Christmas event in Finland. Marko has performed in it many times - both his solos as well as the the duets with different singers like Floor (whom he brought in) - are incredible.
And he has done projects with Ayreon, where he just sings.

Huge props to Jukka for even being able to play at all, let alone to perfection. I can't function in a migraine beyond involuntarily crying and throwing up. I wish he wouldn't have had to do that but I also suspect that as a professional performer it might be something he's done before and since.
Marco won The Masked Singer a few years ago, that's as close as I know you can get to playing a role. Still don't know how the judges didn't pick up on such a distinct voice
Think about it: Within a 2 years span (1977-1978) Kitee, a finland toen with less than 10k people, gazve birth to Tomas, Jukka, Emppu and TARJA…

Such a great cover. Marko is being missed, hope he comes up with more of his music. His first solo album Pyre of the Black Heart is very good.

This was the last concert of End of a Era, 2005, everyone on stage knows that they are going to fire Tarja at the end of this performance, if you watch the whole show you can see that that there is something up, they do not know that Nightwish will continue after this show, they know that it WILL continue without Tarja regardless, they are putting there all in, to make sure that if this dream ends here, they go out on top. There is a lot of drama, pain, anger, sadness behind the scenes, there is a exhaustion, illness. IT NEVER effected there performance, it made it better. This song was chosen as a statement I think about what is going on. There are shared looks and maybe some tears, when Tarja is not looking.
It takes a while to get that last note out of your head, lol. Just amazing.
There's a lot of broken telephone going on with rumors and urban legends about this concert, but there's actual evidence of only Tarja having been ill during this concert (poor thing had a pretty bad flu and you could tell at times). The migraine thing with Jukka in particular is basically completely based on speculation, but it has become a persistent part of fan lore by now.
I was lucky enough to have been there to witness this live, I'll never forget it.
It's pretty funny. I've asked a couple of times in the reaction videos for the source of information about Jukka's migraine and of course no one has it 😄
@@ValtteL well I can tell you. There was a reactor maybe two years ago, who was a nurse, and she just randomly said that Jukka seemed tired and that he might have a migraine here. After that some people started to spread this rumor as truth.
100% truth is that NO, Jukka did NOT suffer from migraine in this concert.

Yup, I remember. Nowhere there was *ever* a single mention of Jukka having suffered from migraine during this very (in)famous show. You'd think it would have been mentioned in at least one interview or press conference or backstage video somewhere. Or the official book. But nope, not a peep until a couple of years back when someone on TH-cam decided to speculate. Ah well, I guess it's something that happens when you get big enough, rumors and speculations gain wings.
Last year, Marko did a few dates with the "Northern Kings" vocal group he's been a part of for years as well as touring a bit with his solo band. Additionally, he guested on a couple of songs from other artists. He also helped rescue the 2022 Raskasta Joulua (Heavy Christmas) tour after it ran into a bit of difficulty. They were only able to put on about half the number of shows as usual but Marko performed in those.
You should watch the official video for Nightwish's song "Noise". All the members get to play characters and do some emoting. Plus there is the Imaginariam [sic] movie from years ago.
Remember last show of Tarja and she was fired after show.. you can see best in this song that guys knows what is coming and to be done.. btw I was there definitely highlights of the concert!

How's the ❤️. It's +6 here today. There's a video of Marko singing a duet and the song us called All I Ask of You. Marko last year had two videos one is Soita with the Lap steel guitar. Below Zero 2021 is the other one and it's just a studio version. Marko had to.learn to sing again after his not so perfect throat surgery.

Good reaction, and glad you're doing _The_ _Islander_ next! It's my son's favourite NW song, and it show off a slightly different side of Marko. (By the way, in Finnish there is always emphasis on the first syllable of a word: MARko, TAMpere, etc. It's a much more consistent language than English for pronunciation.)

Part of the overwhelming effect of Emppu's guitar on this is the slightly higher pitch. Someone's comments reminded me that Emppu tunes one down. That would mean on a tone up version, the guitar would be being fretted up higher when playing, that would give a an even more cutting tone.

Jukka suffered from the migraine because of chronic insomnia. He probably experience other symptoms that he didn't talk about. I know all about it, as I had chronic, obstructive sleep apnea for years and didn't know why when I sitting up that I could sleep but not laying down. I had hallucinations....more like trying to see through a kaleidoscope.
I went with a friend of mine to a weekend of NASCAR racing and my experience wasn't the best, because the race cars are extremely loud,, which only aggravated my condition...the migraine I had was extremely severe! My friend told me I need to go get a sleep study.
The doctor told me my sleep apnea was one of the worst cases he had seen, as I was getting less than 20 minutes of REM Sleep per 8 hours.
That was 23 years ago....and I have been using a Bipap machine since then.
I hope the doctor's have treated his problem and he is able to sleep. He is still with band, in a managerial position.

With all respect to Pink Floyd, but imho Nightwish did the impossible and kicked the original out of the park on all levels.
Also imagine playing the best performance of the night when the lead singer is of stage for a wardrobe change 🤯🤯🤯🤯

Since we're dealing with Marko singing cover songs, here's one I'm sure very few know.
Marko has his band (with his brother,) called Tarot, and they made a quite unique cover of Phil Collin's "Mama".
Until about a year ago, the only TH-cam video of it was a horribly low sound quality, however it has been uploaded properly and now you can have a go at it.
I promise you will find this rather unique and very indicative of Marko's vocal qualities not heard in the Nightwish songs...

I am a huge Pink Floyd fan for some 40-45 years. High hopes in the PF version sounds a bit (too) polished, the NW version is far more emotional.
Christi, I've seen Emppu mimicking lyrics before, I can remember one specific exemple (check Alpenglow in Mexico around 2:45) but there are more.
FYI ... Jukka was not suffering a migraine if people would look closely they could see that what he is actually doing is leaning over the kit to mute the toms. It was just a bit of theatrics the migraine story is just that a story that grew a life of it's own on yuotube even though it is inaccurate. When the video flashes back you can see Jukka's elbows are on the toms and he comes up swinging with his usual powerful hits ... something someone fighting a migraine would find almost impossible to do. Jukka did suffer from insomnia which eventually led to him having to quit performing but no one has ever reported that he suffered migraines.

When I first time heard this song, I, of course, was admiring Marko. And did not noticed what was happening with the drummer. Such devotion.

Marko was supposed to be a warm-up artist with his solo band for Nightwish world tour 2020, but then the corona came and everything was canselled/postponed. When Marko was forced to stop he realised, that he is not feeling well.

Soita = Play, this song is a story of unstable family, father drinking heavily, ambulance is needed many times.There is better future. Mika Jaakkola is a lap steel guitarist because that`s the only way he can play guitar any more, occupational trauma.
Marko has done a lot during three decades. Here is one of my favorites with his band Tarot. the name of the song is Tides (2007). Marko was already well known heavy metal star, when he joined Nightwish (2002) and he did an excellent job there, but still I think best works vocally he has done elsewhere.
