The impact he made in just a short amount of time is probably the most remarkable part. So sad we will never truly be able to see what he could do. R.I.P. Kelvin Kiptum. Marathon runners of the future will continue your legacy.
I don't think I have ever felt such a sense of loss to a person that I didn't personally know. An incredible prospect, incredible potential, I was so looking forward to witnessing his future fantastic endeavours. Almost guaranteed to happen. I'm sure he would've had a couple of blips but everything was generally in his favour to annihilate the past records and set all sorts of new standards. I was so excited. There is now a huge void for all of us fans of the sport and the man, where do we go from here? The answer is that so many young athletes will want to be the next Kelvin Kiptum...especially since what's happened they will flood out of the woodwork, they will literally come from nowhere and so many of these youngsters will be driven now to take up that mantle. Kelvin's loss is no to no avail...it will inspire so many now and that amazing next level will still happen thanks to his legacy and those driven young athletes.
I agree... I think so many young athletes won't wait to retire to the marathon after a track career. Most will start their careers in the marathon and we're going to witness a revolution. That will be Kiptum's legacy!
Part of it is that he had so much unfinished business, you know like if it was Kipchoge, it'd still be a devastating loss but at least he'd had a long career and won several titles and set world records, with Kiptum, he was our guy to break the 2hr mark, he'd only been around a year, he had so much ahead of him - to me it would be a bit like someone making a huge breakthrough and finding a cure to an untreatable disease, and then before getting the chance to publish it, dying in a house fire and having all his work destroyed, humanity would be right back where it started
Him and Kipochge- major respect I have for those two who I look up to better myself as a runner. Wow I was just watching both of their past marathons and was so excited to see them run together in the future. This one hit really hard. I have never cried this hard over someone I don’t even know. But when that person made you fall in love with a sport, it hits home 😢 RIP ❤️
he somehow achieved his dream of being at the top and inspired a generation in only 6 years of professional running. Has it ever happened before in any sport?
Thank you so much for your kind words. We can't even properly articulate the profound sense of loss we feel as Kenyans. It's a terrible tragedy. I have shed tears for this young man yet I didn't know him personally. I think as a mother, it's just terrible when we lose young ones. They belong to all of us😢😢😢
I don't want to think of this man anymore. Everytime i think about him i feel deep pain. I was seeing him running under 2 hours. Rest in peace Kelvin! From Senegal.
True. But his greatness was revealed while he was still alive - he did break the world record after all! Let's not forget that! But you're right that we're left to imagine what *more* could have been (and I believe there would have been much more)
A wonderful runner and a wonderful person that will surely be missed, such a bright light and a dedicated sole. We will miss you; may you rest in peace.
Memories are timeless Kelvin ❤ your passing was an immeasurable loss to the world of athletics 💔 such a meteoric rise to the pinnacle of the world... the whole world was on edge to see what you would go on to achieve 🥲 gone but will never be forgotten
Whole world including me was waiting for Kipchoge/Kiptum battle in Paris 2024 but that will going to remain as a dream forever. Wanted to see him run under 2 hours. RIP sir, you had inspired the current and future generation in such a short span. Love and condolences from 🇮🇳
Rest In Peace Champion 🌹🌻🥇💫, you gone to soon . Your legacy will continued shine in Marathon runner ." Kelvin Kiptum " you're the inspiration for all of us 💖
To the families, associates and friends of Kelvin Kiptum and his coach....condolences, thoughts and prayers. May God grant comfort strength to you in your hour of sorrow.
This is hard. A huge loss. My head and heart has been heavy since the accident. He was an extraordinary athlete, and will always be a huge inspiration. Rest in peace Kelvin Kiptum.
Well Done Sebastian Coe for that introduction. Kelvin was a true sensation and what a great shame that we will not get to see him again. World Athletics has suffered a huge loss.
This is so heartbreaking man, i cant imagine what the parents are going through, Kevin being their only child(not their only son but only child, his mum had fertility issues and could never get another baby)and their only hope to transform his home and village. Rip champ! Condolences to the family.
This BROTHER is soo special and so humble just beyond words. He wanted to be a LEGEND and with God he became one. Now you are reunited with God Kelvin and i will never forget you. Thank you Boss❤❤💪🏽
That’s sooo sad 😔 I’m really heart broken about this news… I can not or do not want to believe this… I really really enjoyed watching him run 🏃♂️!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Heartbreaking loss for the sport of running. Goodbye Kelvin, we will all miss you dearly. Thank you for showing us the beauty of hard work and dedication. Rest in peace and condolences to the families.
I still can't believe it and I am heartbroken about that. So unfortunate, such a tragedy. He would have become the greatest marathon ever I believe and certainly broke the 2H mark. RIP Kelvin and Coach
So heartbroken. This guy had everything in line to achieve the best in marathon. He would have broken sub two hour in so many races that we could even get used to it. RIP champion
Rest in peace beautiful angel.. what a huge loss, what a shame losing such a young champion 😢😢😢, very sad of such a cruel fate😢😢😢, death is so unfair, hurts like hell indeed, condolences the family, fans are invited to organize tribute events keeping the memory alive , keep on running and be supportive all athlets competitions, fans are always here to encourage you the best we can 😢😢😢you will be missed😢😢😢
What an amazingly humble and modest young man. The world lost an incredible sportsman and the first man to break 2 hours and beyond. Rest in peace champion.
Rest in power, brother. You continue to inspire us all. I told my coach “I’m gonna pull a Kelvin Kiptum and run a negative split” during my last PR in Jan. Still gonna commemorate you that way when racing gets hard and try to run fast.
For me kelvin kiptums loss ranks up there with Kobes...we are still in denial...though he was with us for such a short time..may perpetual light shine your 🇰🇪
Two greats of the marathon - Samuel Wanjiru and Kelvin Kiptum - Both Kenyan, both died at age 24, both had so much more to show us. Wanjiru still holds the Olympic record and I dare say, Kiptum will hold the World record for many years to come.
I was running way slower of course and I was quite tired after the finish, however when I learned that Kiptum ran a world record some of my tiredness just lifted away and I got a second rush of runner's high. Almost the same experience as after the 2022 Berlin marathon finish when I learned Kipchoge ran a WR I got the same weight lift off my shoulder and 2nd runner's high.
So heartbreaking. Rip to him and his coach, he left his mark on the world and we will never know what could have been. All love to his family and friends during this time
Great dreams shattered. What a loss to his family, village, country, and entire world that was looking forward to his next run. May God be with his family.
So many dreams, so many hopes, so many broken hearts. Gone so soon. Rest well, champ.
the sub 2 hour marathon will have to wait. We all know he had it in him.

Dropping the pacemaker, what a blazing pace! And he didn't even really "turn on the rocket" until the second half!
I was running way slower of course and I was quite tired after the finish, however when I learned that Kiptum ran a world record some of my tiredness just lifted away and I got a second rush of runner's high.
