Changing My Tires in a Snow Storm (STUDDED TIRES)

- Well it’s that time of year, and there’s no better time than to get my studded winter tires on my car than in a snow storm! Join me outside in the blizzard as I change my tires… what kind of shenanigans will I get myself into this time!?
Two in a couple days! We got 4 or 5 inches here in tennessee this week and about closed chattanooga down. I remember those days up in detroit with snow everywhere. Dont miss it but i do remember it. Michigan bans studs and chains so i never got to drive on them. Does it help as much as it seems like it would? Keep them coming! so fun to follow your journey. You remind me of melissa from welcome to the woods when she was starting. Shes like a pro now ans soon you will be too! Take if from someone who mastered two trades (auto mechanic and plumbing) we are all a little awkward when we start out, girls or boys, young or old - learning is always beautiful.....and awkward.
I think she is in part of the mountains of Alberta… can probably get 2inches of snow in a few hours. Lol
I live in Tennessee and I use studded snow tires. And yes the studded snow tires are THEE way to travel around in snowy and especially icy conditions. I like to get on a fat/thick patch of ice with my studded tires on my rear wheel drive car and do what I call a "freezeout" ( burnouts are dry asphalt) it will put up a rooster tail of snow behind the car and dig right thru the ice and leave gouged out lines from the studs in the asphalt. You can re-stud a studded snow tire. ( out with the old, worn studs in with the new) I've seen it done. Old worn studs are not as effective as new ones.
She's in BC I think @@paultaylorduke
@@keithbrettell2058 I was guessing because I didn’t think studded tires were legal in BC. And she has the F150…. Figured that was an Alberta giveaway. 😂
@@paultaylorduke she mentioned being in the PNW...pacific northwest...in a previous video but I'm only guessing too. She could be up near Whistler or Blackcomb where they get lots of snow.
After removing, painting and replacing the bumpers on the truck swapping tires was a walk in the park I'm guessing. For a girl who was afraid to check tire pressure you've come a long way Meg. Thanks for the bonus video this week always a treat to see what you're up to
Thanks, Rob! I was trying to release the bumper video last weekend but I was having trouble exporting it... I think I need a new computer lol! Trying to stick to the once a week uploads. Thanks for your comment and support, means a lot!
Great video Meg
Great job putting your studded tires on Meg
Thanks Meg! 👍🏻 Great work 👊🏻 Stay safe, stay warm and take care my friend 🙏🏻Appreciate you 🙂
Thank you! Take care!
You look like a natural in snow. Enjoyed the video and glad the Jetta didn't fall on you when you removed the lug bolts before jacking it off the ground. Merci
I do love the snow! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, and yes also very glad the car didn't fall!!
good security👍👏👏
You can buy a stud kit and convert to standard style stud and nut combo if you want. And those are not spacers. Those are centering rings to center your hub to the bore of the rim. Those are generic rims made for a lot of different cars so it’s designed like that. Same reason why they have more then one set of holes drilled for mounting
Good to know!
Best investment is an air gauge with a readout on it, no need to swap back and forth!
I have one of those somewhere, I just couldn't find it!
Super! You're so energetic, I love that.
I know what you mean about that style of lug stud/nut combination. Try changing a tire a night. Very difficult to line up the holes.
One suggestion: brush snow off the car first, THEN clear the area at ground level. Ya know? Gravity! haha
Also, winter tires are softer tread compound, and as such wear out faster if run year round.
Thanks for the kind words!
I still think snow tire sounds silly. I live in Florida. I've never even seen real snow, ever LOL Thanks for sharing. You can keep your snow
Thanks for watching! I love our seasons but sometimes when it's -20C (-4F) or below, I really envy the South lol!
Thank you very much for the entertaining video and you have my respect for your work. I have one question, are these wheels balanced? I assume that they have just been lying around all year?
Here is an excerpt from the tire manufacturer Continental:
Tires are balanced to distribute the weight evenly around the entire tire circumference. Unbalanced tires cause unpleasant vibrations in the vehicle interior and steering wheel. Unbalanced tires also lead to premature wear of suspension and steering components, rotating parts and tires.
I hope you continue to have fun with your projects and creating your videos.
Thank you very much. Best regards from Switzerland
Thank you for watching! Yes, the wheels are balanced 😊
Thanks for always including your mistakes, that’s how we all learn!
Thanks Kev! I'll keep sharing!
not wearing flipflops?
Lol!
Meg i really enjoy your videos keep up the good work 👍
Thanks very much!
Gotta love dragging the floor jack around in the snow. I don't know about you, but I'm ready for the warmer weather!
Lol I definitely got some funny looks from the neighbours. I love winter, but enjoy the heat too!
Cool vids yo! Haven’t seen all of them, but shout out to your DIY attitude dude. Keep going…
Thanks, Steve!
comming from the UK i never understood changing to "Winter Tyres" but i guess in snow and ice that bad you need to. where i live we had 5 whole hours of snow and the day after it was gone lol...
Here it is legally required to have snow tires to drive on the roads, and they actually have check points set up before entering the highway and will ticket you and tow you if you don't have the proper tires! It's actually so dangerous to even attempt these roads on summer or even all season tires!
Hey Meg thanks a lot for this video
You're welcome! Thanks for watching!
nice view
Those rings are called hub centric rings pretty much required on all after market wheels you put on a car. They make sure that the wheel is correctly centered very important
Good to know! I forgot what they were called, but knew they were important! I've put them in a safe place for when I swap back to them in the summer
I'm surprised with a 1/2 impact wrench that you had to reach for the breaker bar. Curious what the torque is on the wrench? Excellent video!!! 👍🏼🇨🇦
Enjoyed watching! Even though it was short and sweet, still had me laughing. Must snow there a lot to run winter tires year round!! I live near Chicago and we hardly got any this year (bummer).
I’ve only even heard of studding sled tracks or dirt bike tires to ride on ice. Bet most folks round here have never even heard of winter tires. lol Anywho…stay safe and keep smiling 😊
Glad you enjoyed it! There are certain mountain passes around here that get snow in June, so my preference is to run winters all year round, although this year we haven't seen near as much snow as previous years (which I agree, bummer!) Thanks for watching!
Nice lil job u go girl 😘😘😘
Thanks!
Love the videos. You should always check the drivers side door for the car manufacturers recommend tire pressure. It takes in account the weight and weight distribution of the car to give you the best performance and traction. 👍
😅you got to love winter
I sure do!
I hope you’re not freezing cold I hope it goes well you’re changing your tires out 😊❤️
Thank you! It wasn't too bad!
meg at 9:51 i used to be a gas attendant we were not allowed to put air into tires due to liability. if we did it the business would be blamed
I always put a tarp over my entire car to keep the
Snow off of it. That way you just take the tarp and the snow off all at once. Its way faster way of getting snow off your car.
We have way too much wind and snow for that lol sometimes we get 3-4 feet over night!
@@Meg.August I tie the tarp to the car so it doesn't get blown off by the wind.
Doing great Meg! Your "nuts" doing this in the cold snow, but nice work!
lol thanks!
I just finished watching all your videos I'm watching an waiting for you next one great dyi of the garage tots shelve I'm fixen build me one for my garage.im front texas I bin looking for ideas for you to be ire next urube star!😊
Thank you for support, appreciate that!
07:19 "time to get some new winter tires for the summer" 😂💀 Would only hear this from Canadians, and a very select few at that
Not sure if it’s worth it to you, but they do make alignment studs that are the same diameter as lug bolts that thread in and you then use those to align your lug bolts. I have them, and no longer need them since I don’t have a VW anymore. Comment back if you want them and I’ll mail them to you.
That's very kind, thank you! Although I don't have a PO box set up yet, maybe in the future!
Always a good idea to give the lug nuts/bolts a coating of copper grease when refitting. Reduces rust binding and helps when undoing the next time
Thanks for watching!
Never add anything to nuts or bolts !!! Automotive cars require nothing!!!! It actually increases thread stretching, and is not recommended
The winter is a pain I'm in Colorado and I know the winter
It can be a pain at times, for sure!
they are called hub centric rings
Thank you! I forgot their name
Meg , every time you change your tires you should always use sand paper or a wire wheel to clean both mating surfaces!!! The rust can create uneven adhesion resulting in what’s called a wheel off … the essential part of changing tires and wheels is making sure both surfaces are clean for proper torquing!! Just a FYI
I say this coming from a manager at Kaltire
Thanks, David, appreciate the tips
Meg , can please mention this best practice in a future video.. just say thanks Dave for the very important tip , while changing your wheels and 😊tires.. I’d appreciate it !!
Happy saturday! 🥶
You too!
It made me cold watching you do that
It was a chilly one!
Very wise choise, in Finland is illegal drive without winter tires in winter :D You are first youtuber in US who i see uses right tires in winter conditions!
It is also illegal here to drive without winter tires in the winter! We have check-points on the highways and cops can have you towed, or turned around if you don't have them!
@@Meg.August nice to hear!
Btw thanks for good content!
👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
If its that cold out it going too stay broken till at least june..........
Very impressed! Btw. You are beautiful!
Thank you!
Hi watching your video from London ontario. Just wondering do you live in Alberta? Do you guy use salt on roads.?
We do salt and sand the roads here, not in Alberta though!
Hi, may I ask what size winter tires you're running, cause they looked extra wide?! Thanks!
My summer-winter tires are 245/45/17s (quite wide!) but my studded winters are 205/55/16s, but I need to replace my summer-winters and I'm thinking of going down to a 215 or 225. I had bought those wheels and tires for a good deal of Craigslist
@@Meg.August Whoa, thanks for the answer, yeah 245/45 is extreme even in a summer tyre setup too! I'd def go down to 225/45 r17 is a common size so, you should be getting good deals on that! And also better driving capabilities than with the 245's!
O look she has to tape her shovel up!! Lol if it's broke tape it!!!
awesome woman I like what you do
Thank you!
Who are you?
the studless winter tires aren't as good in rain as summer tires
We get so much rain here that summer tires just don't cut it! Either need all season or winters all year round
@@Meg.August I didn't really get what you meant, what I do understand, and I am a professional driver here in Finland so I do have an interest, but I still can be wrong and obviously 2 different parts of the world, we can do things differently, but what I've seen studless winter tires, the pattern doesn't have a proper lines for water to escape so hydroplaning can become an issue in heavy rain and puddles, but summer tires do have those lines for water to escape. but still, your videos have been quite entertaining, keep it up
We have snow tires without deep tread pattern (mostly used by city drivers) however we also have snow tires with deep tread pattern which are excellent in the rain. As for the studs they are optional the tires perform well without them but the studs just give that extra grip in the black ice and the packed glare ice (sometimes it snow so hard the plows just turn it into 2" of solid ice on the roads). The only downside to the studs is they tear up the driveway and are super noisy lol @@Repsikka
@@Meg.August yeah, From Finland here, I know the difference between the 2 types of winter tires, funny thing is that I don't think I've ever used studless winter tires, just studded and summer tires, and yes, studded tires are loud, but I never notice that after installing the winter tires, but I notice how freaking quiet the summer tires are in spring
It's obvious that your not scared of airing up your tires and it's also obvious that your no stranger to using hand tools.
I've come along way! It's so nice to see and feel gratitude for the lessons and skills I've learned along the way.
sorry i could not watch a one hour vid of doing up a bumper bar, this is amusing
Sweet leggings
@Meg August You're very good :) but I have difficulty to concentrating on the details of your tasks because I find you really gorgeous especialy in your leggings 🤦
Meg, I wonder what your neighbours says when they see you doing what you do, or maybe all the women over there do the same, and is not that impressive. here in Sweden they would be afraid of breaking the nails, not all of them of course but the most of them.
Same here in Canada. Some think I'm crazy, some think it's awesome!
U r beautiful. Meg
Scared to inflate your tires?! Worried you were going to blow them up? ... ba dum
Yes, in fact, that is correct! I never grew up fixing things, we always took our vehicles to the dealer, and I was always very intimidated to do anything car related.
@@Meg.August Well, you done did get er done perfect!
No boyfriend to help you?
do you have instagram?
