I'm excited for you to hear the complex Trivium songs. You're probably stopping like "WHAT? THIS ISN'T COMPLEX?". It is, but believe it or not, this was Trivium's commercial period. The lyrics are a lot more stripped down and vague than the deep lyrics Trivium were originally known for. Matt Heafy, the vocalist and co-lead guitarist, blew out his voice in 2014. That's him using the unhealthy scream techniques he was using before just for the record, but they're a lot less powerful than they were. The drums are advanced, but not as compositionally great as on older material with the band's first drummer Travis. The albums Ascendancy, The Crusade, and especially Shogun are really technical and compositionally brilliant, and Matt's vocals on them were uniquely powerful. You should react to the songs A Gunshot to the Head of Trepidation (album version), Suffocating Sight, Becoming the Dragon, Entrance of the Conflagration, Kirisute Gomen, Like Callisto to a Star in Heaven, and Shogun. This band were absolute monsters in their prime.
Matt's gotten a lot better since, I think In Waves onwards is their best work, the newest album In the Court of the Dragon is their absolute masterpiece

Personally, I find that there's a lack of personal impact throughout both of those records, as if Trivium were going through the motions, trying to create something great, but couldn't quite make the most of what they'd had. The Sin and the Sentence is energetic, and it was a decent return to form, but its production is sterile, and that had carried over to What the Dead Men Say, for about 2/3rds of the record. In the Court of the Dragon is a very crisp album, with much of the impact of Ascendancy through Shogun, though a few of the songs on it tend to fall into the same repetition as The Sin and the Sentence, and we could've gone without tracks like Feast of Fire, No Way Out Just Through, and Fall Into Your Hands. I often find that Alex had dropped the ball on writing his parts for them, because his cymbal work can kind of sound like a defective bicycle bell, at times. He'd pulled things together extremely well on The Phalanx, A Crisis of Revelation, In the Court of the Dragon, The Shadow of the Abattoir, and Like a Sword Over Damocles, but he's done too much in terms of technicality at points, in my opinion, not quite offering consistent punch, like he can on his best songs.
@@thatlonewolfguy2878 as far as live performances go, I definitely agree that Matt's doing really well. Some of his streams have had better vocals during them than everything he's recorded for most of his studio career. His acoustic EPs are absolutely killing the entire game, honestly.
