That they are! I'm glad I've finally encountered someone who knows that those are jet-powered airliners! Pretty much everyone else nowadays thinks that wide-bodies are driven by internal propellers similar to the external propellers like the ones on smaller planes.
Always had a soft spot for the DC-10. Such a good looking airplane. As an Aussie it was rare to travel in one as Qantas never operated it. Ironically while on a trip to the US in 1989 we arrived to the airport for our LAX to HNL leg and learned that Qantas pilots were on strike over some pay dispute back home. We were then put onto a United flight which was a DC-10.
Miss the DC10 and MD11 classic airlines liveries. I started my career as a young aerospace engineer and got to briefly worked on the MD11, Rohr Industries San Diego ❤
Had the DVD of that,the up close shots,are excellent,and the detail is great! My dad flew for PanAm,and Oyster Bay branch ran right in back of my home! So I Aviation on the front door,and railroads out the back! Plus construction equipment all around,so an interesting childhood!! Thanks for your always excellent work!! Thanks 😊!
I flew on many DC-10s, and they were very comfortable and reliable. I actually flew on Nationals very first DC-10, which had an engine event early on, but flew many operated by United and American, and did a transatlanticround trip on 2 operated by KLM.
I was thinking to myself “ no way in hell can this be current”. And I checked the intro and yes more than 20 years ago. The DC10 only having one major accident in around 1979. A technician snapped a motor mount and didn’t tell anyone. It crashed trying to take off. The engine literally dropped of and the miss balance crashed it.
Shot in 2000 and early 2001. After September 11 too much harassment shooting planes so I gave up. I flew to the UK from Phoenix in a DC10 right after that crash. Window seat overlooking the wing!
I really miss the tri-jets. I think they were WAY ahead of there time in terms of appearance. And are still very viable in today's commercial aviation market. If they had just revamped them with bigger engines and more modern interiors. Especially, the MD-11's. The can easily compete with 787 and A330 in terms of size.
I love both of those aircrafts including the l-1011. I forget the difference between the DC-10 and the md11 is it the wings one has a straight wing and the other one has a flip at the end of the wing which is which
Too bad you don't have LTU. My experience on the MD-11 was exclusively on LTU (some of their main US destinations out of Düsseldorf were MIA and LAX). I flew on an L-1011 with them as well, specifically the TriStar 500. I did also fly on a KLM DC-10 on a roundtrip.
The left engine detached from the wing during take-off and smashed onto the runway. The plane continued to climb but the pilots lowered their airspeed in preparation for an emergency return to the airport. Unfortunately, although they were trained to slow the plane down in an engine out emergency, they were unaware that further damage to the wing had happened and slowing the plane down caused it to roll over on it's left and stall. It crashed in a field near a trailer park just outside of the airport boundary.
Sorry, but compared to the L1011, that rear engine looks like an afterthought. As for "issues", the DC10 was the 737 Max of it's day...beancounters (the same beancounters responsible for the Max) over engineering. Cut costs and rush production.
I miss the majestic tri-jets. While I prefer the L1011 to the DC-10/MD-11, aside from the 777, the current generation of twin jet wide bodies is just not as awesome to watch in action as those big, imposing tri-jets.
I agree 100% - I also miss the B747's. BA in the uk no longer have the 747's. They got rid of the DC-10's many years ago which was a real pity. I prefer jets to be awesome rather than luxury. I guess that's just me..
And noise and hours on the engines and fuselage, the twin wide bodys are way more efficient easier to maintain and simpler to fly. Plus they are way more expensive to buy so they put alot of pressure to fill and fly at a profit.
@@mikes7639 The noise especially.. a bunch of silly people decide to buy houses next to airports and then throw a pissy fit over the noise. I love the noise, the roar of a jet engine makes it feel more powerful and awesome!

MD-11 DC-10. Built like tanks. Is it any wonder so many of the MD-11 originally produced are still in service as freighters. Amazing engineering.👏👏😳😳

Having been retired for more than ten years, and having no access to source material, but I suspect around 1999.
On some of the shots, you cut away before we saw the lift-off. That is the best part! Don't cut away until the plane is airborne.
Flew on Hawaiian on the DC10 in the late 90s, and Alitalia MD11 and Continental and And Skyservice to Honolulu on a charter flight
