I still remember the first time I saw an MD-11. I was in the car at night driving out of Atlanta and just a few miles out there was a FedEx MD-11 that ended up passing right over us. It was a few thousand feet AGL but it looked so much closer, those things are fucking massive! Second time I saw one was at the delta museum at the Atlanta airport and I was in the cockpit of their 747 exhibit and the nose just so happened to be facing FedEx’s north cargo ramp and there was a line of maybe 2 or 3 consecutive MD-11’s. Absolutely beautiful sight.

The baseline DC-10 started as idea AA had for an "airbus" that could fly 250 folks and their gear from New York's LaGuardia (short runways and weight limits) to Miami nonstop. Or to Chicago O'Hare. Somewhere along the line the engineers at MD warmed to the idea that same airframe could become the plumped up heir to the 707 Intercontinental throne. All they had to do was figure out where to carry a whole bunch more gas. They thought they had a home run for the airlines that needed overseas range in a widebody that slotted above the MD's stretched -8s and below the 747. MD sold a bunch of that model, DC-10-30/40 (depending on P&W or GE being onboard). MD clobbered Lockheed's Tristar with that model. Shame was, they won that battle but lost the war. Airbus came up with the a widebody twin, something no domestic airline said they would buy. Until they did buy a few. And then they bought a few more. Some of those were a chunky twin brewed up by that coven of witches in Seattle, the 767, and its little brother, the 757. It's on record that MD gave about 15 minutes of thought to a widebody twin in the 60s, but with high-bypass fans in their infancy, airlines didn't trust 'em and told MD you can't ferry a twin with an engine out, but you can on a tri-jet. And, longer story short, it was a twin that help snuff out the MD-11. Those Sons of Boeing did it again with the 777. With the -200 decent range and -300 long range, who doesn't want a big, gentle, forgiving flying machine that prints money. The MD-11, bless her, just wasn't meant to be, but she was all MD could offer. The company was ailing. They gave away MD-83s, shot their last shot with two narrow-body derivative twins. Airbus was on the rise with new designs. Boeing was doing was Boeing always does. And so many of the flying public in the US found themselves on 50-passenger jets doing the hub and spoke shuffle. But the MD-11 demanded the best a pilot had to give. Unforgiving. And you'd better watch that CG on landing. At least that's what many of pilots now on the 777 say when reminiscing about their days on Long Beach's last tri-jet.

I really miss the tri-jets. They were unique and in my candid opinion still have a VERY viable place in the commercial passenger market. Especially, the MD-11. If they had revamped it with newer engines and modern interior cabins. I believe it could have easily competed against the likes of the 787 and A330. As it's around the same size. Such a shame it's only in cargo capacity service now.

Those MD-11's are a sexy plane, I love those ole school 3 engine planes👍🏿👍🏿but It was really sad day back in the 1989 flight 232 the #2 engine fan disk grenade whipping out all 3 hydraulic systems 🙁and come to find out through investigation it was a microscopic crack in the fan disk that grew over time from a manufacturing flaw

Your microphone is of poor quality...it's not picking up low frequency sounds...I'm listening on a hifi system and low frequency sounds from these engines are missing

With this one and the B747-400 going, my interest in aviation drops significantly. :( So cool to see them still sometimes.

if that's how powerful the MD-11 is on takeoff, I wonder if there could have ever been a functional MD-11 twinjet.

Are these planes still in service? I see UPS and Fed-Ex coming in on approach here, but they are Boeing-777's

There’s really no reason the dc10 should have lost the jumbo jet race.it only had 3 not 4 engines which were at least somewhat fuel efficient

I don't trust a plane with an engine built into its vertical stabilizer.

On 10:01 that was a really loud engine and fast plane like 500 Mph
