    Hi friends!
    Many of you might have recognized that this october the last commercial flying MD-11 is going to be retired. KLM was one of the last MD-11 operators still using this magnificent aircraft! Since a few years I had the strong wish to be on the MD-11 again soon. When I heard that it will be retired soon I didn't hesitate long and booked a flight with KLM. During the booking process I found out that my dates would fit with the final flight, so this is how I made it onto that last flight!
    And of course I want to share with you my experience! Unfortunately this was a full night flight, which makes it even harder to get a good report about it! But I tried my best.
    Initially I was supposed to be on another MD-11 flight from Amsterdam to Montreal, but due to bad weather conditions in Amsterdam I got rebooked onto Air France through Paris, what was a really disappointing experience! I lost my MD-11 dayflight window seat, had to fly through Charles de Gaule, no window seat in a crappy old B747 cabin, bad french attitude, Air France managed to lose my luggage and so on... all in all a day to forget!
    So I was really looking forward to this last MD-11 flight after not getting onto my outbound MD-11. KLM did a great job on making this flight a special event, they offered a buffet, did some entertaining at the gate and so on. The KLM crew did a really great job and I would definitely book through KLM again in the future.(nope, never again Air France). Unfortunately KLM and Air France work together really close..
    Well I hope you get a good look into this last flight in my video. I did it a bit longer than usual. Enjoy!

    Hey Amandeuce! I am a Montreal Planespotter and I can give you some info on this last flight. So, the reason that the captain spooled up to engines for 30 secs before taking off was for show. Here in Montreal, we have a giant planespotting community, and through Facebook, have met and known the crews of KLM's MD-11. We have met them in Montreal, too. When this plane landed for the last time in Montreal, hours before you boarded it, it was wet outside, and the captain left the thrust reversers on full for a good minute, to put on a good show! Then, at takeoff, the captain requested to hold short of the runway for a minute to give spotters a chance to photograph this plane at night. Then, he spoiled the engines to MAXIMUM thrust, which almost never happens, just to show what the MD-11 can do one last time. That's the reason you climbed so fast. KLM put on a great show for the last flight, and the whole Montreal PlaneSpotting community would like to thank them. On a side note, in your report, I saw some of the people from Holland I met in Montreal, who came for the last flight also! Great report, and I hope you enjoyed Montreal! Safe travels!
    -Dan

  • @jbrian80
    @jbrian80 7 ปีที่แล้ว +560

    KLM had been loyal to Douglas to the end. Douglas aircraft are built to last, but they rushed DC-10 trying to catch up with Lockheed L-1011, and they rushed the MD-11 because of upcoming models from Boeing 777 and Airbus 330/340 both launched in the late 80's. DC-10 suffered with design flaws, MD-11 suffered performance shortfall in range and fuel burn.

    • @karlp8484
      @karlp8484 7 ปีที่แล้ว +32

      stickmagnet. Almost right. The DC10 was, like the B747, a plane of the late 60's. Mc Donalds rushed the DC10 into service using 1950's standards to beat the B747 into production. Which they did. And over a thousand people died as a result. Would you fly on a DC 10?

    • @alexphillips4663
      @alexphillips4663 7 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      The DC-10 has a safety record comparable to other widebody airliners of the era. It finished its years passenger service as a high-quality, well-regarded aircraft that was a favorite of pilots and passengers alike. There were some design issues early on, but they were all corrected, and the DC-10 went on to have an above-average safety record from that point forward. I would have had no problem flying on one during the years it was still in service.
      The cargo door incidents that initiated doubts about the DC-10s safety were not unique. The DC-10s cargo door latching mechanism was flawed, but the Boeing 747 shared the same flaw (United Airlines flight 811), so it's not really accurate to single the DC-10 out with regard to the 747.
      The crash of American 191 in Chicago was caused by improper maintenance techniques that were contrary to MD maintenance procedures, and the crash of United 232 in Sioux Falls was a function of a defect in the General Electric CF6 jet engine, which was also used on other aircraft, including the Airbus A300, Boeing 747, 767, and the MD-11. A catastrophic, uncontained failure of a jet engine could have brought any of them down. Additional safeguards were added to protect against the loss of all hydraulic fluid after the incident, but as always in aviation, aircraft safety advances one accident at a time.
      To the best of my knowledge, McDonald's never produced an aircraft. Burger King may have, though; I will have to check my records.

      It's McDonnell, not McDonald's. LMAO.

    Hi, i just stumbled upon your great video. I, with a LOT of spotters were on the ground for the departure. Montreal spotters had a love affair with KLM's MD-11, we got to see here everyday ! We don't see on the video, but just before the plane turns from the taxiway to the active runway, near the blue and gray hangars, a lot of spotters were there and we knew the pilot and asked if it could hold the plane still for some seconds for some long exposures pictures before take-off roll. In the ATC audio from that flight, you can hear the captain request a moment to stop and thank all Montreal Spotters :) at 7:07, you can see a flash go off, at the bottom left, that is where the spotting park is located and about 30 people, me included, took pictures and waved. And yes, KLM MD-11 climbed steep and fast, that's why i called them the "Dutch rocket" :) Here is the picture i took of that historic moment flic.kr/p/oSJxi5
    great work !

    A huge honor for you to be on the last ever MD-11 commercial flight! KLM did a great job in everything especially their meals and service. The special certificate certifying your participation in this flight made it even more memorable and one that you'll keep for generations. Yeah, read your description and how could they anyhow rebook you on Air France on your outbound flight just because of bad weather. It makes no sense to me anyway.

    On the MD11 the difference in climb rate between full load and empty is greater than on other common commercial Aircraft. If you have ever flown on an empty MD11 in the cockpit (I was lucky once) you are impressed the crew needs to reduce throttle immediately after rotation not to overspeed the Aircraft. Nevertheless a pitch attitude of around 40 deg is still possible with a climb rate of around 4000 ft/min. Stunning!The jet doesn't look like it can do this but somehow it can thanks to a high lift wing design and overpowered engines. Also I additionally believe the Captain used Max Power Takeoff for this last flight since nursing these engines has no value for KLM anymore 😆.

    Nice! I have to say, one of my BEST flight experiences ever was flying a KLM 747 from Boston-AMS back in 1998. In general, KLM is one of the world's best airlines without a doubt! And compared to other European airports, Schiphol is a DREAM.......

    The best plane ever built was the DC-10! And since the MD-11 is derived from her, she's also great to look at. Shame I had a surgery that month and wasn't able to witness the final commercial flight, nor the farewell flights in November 2014. But, I was glad to have at least been able to trave to Birmingham on February 24th, 2014 for the last DC-10 flight. Thanks for the great video and for bringing back fond memories. ❤

    Simply wonderful video! Your great dialog brought back the enjoyment of flying for so many years for business and pleasure -- and personally, I was so blessed to fly from the 60's to 2000 -- in so many great planes, great crews and great trips. I simply prefer not to comment on flying today.

    Great vdo. Rocket takeoff and fast flight on strong tailwind. MD11 is a great plane. I never fly Md11 in my past. Foods look delicious. Well done on not cutting takeoff and landing. It like drag racing. I flew CX L1011 and UAL Dc-10 in around 80s and 90s.

    MD-11 ... my favorite aircraft too. Glad I got to fly on it four times (yeah, I know -- not a lot).
    Thank you for your video ... It was excellent and I enjoyed every second of it! What a privilege to have flown on the last MD-11 commercial flight with that wonderful crew. Cheers!

    Thank you for documenting your fav plane experience and sharing with us! Seems like a planeload of av geeks on this flight! I love the announcement - it is so special. I quite like how KLM's main courses are served in rectangular containers rather than squarish. That landing is so special! Awesome water salute too. Thank you very much for sharing, L! I thoroughly enjoyed this one

    This brings back memories. I flew one of these (possibly this very same one) from Dar es salaam to Amsterdam on Aug 19 2001(night flight 😂). Watching the video, I'm reminded of the loud noise in the cabin! Other than that, I did enjoy the flight (my first out of Africa). Little did I know that I was experiencing a unique part of aviation history.
    I do agree that its a beautiful aircraft, but for me, nothing can top the 747 (which I flew in 4 hours later, for the 1st time. It was a historic day for me indeed!). Thanks for sharing that wonderful video! 👊😎

I love the MD-11, I had a somewhat sad feeling whilst watching this as well. Hope this beauty is having a good time as a freighter. And also, thank you KLM. The salute as well, though! Great video! :)

    MD corporation used to have its maintainence plant here in Tulsa for many years. I remember in 1994 a friend and myself were flying to Houston. She worked there and as we taxied by, she said I think they are going to close it down. When we got back, she got a certified letter telling her that was happening. The M@-10 and 11 were both very similar to the L-1011 which I flew to Bermuda on. I understand why people love it.

    Nice video Amandeuce and a tribute to a great, classic aircraft. I recall my last flight on the MD-11 was a Delta flight from London Gatwick to Cincinnati in the 90's if I am not mistaken. Very spacious aircraft. Sadly, the end of an era but understandable as we face climate change and the economic reality of more efficient fuel consumption. And before I forget, the coffee creamer into the coffee move was outstanding and memorable. Thanks for the video!
