  • Hi everyone. Today we wanted to talk about wry neck in chickens, and how we helped our hen Clara when it happened to her.
Wry neck is a muscle weakness caused by a deficiency in vitamin E. To fix it, it’s imperative to provide vitamin E as soon as possible. You should also provide selenium, which is needed to help the body absorb the vitamin E. Consult your local vet for more info - hope this helps!

Clara is a beautiful bird. Glad you were able to help her turn it around. Thanks so much for this post. I'm caring for a young hen with a moderately severe case, this is helpful.

I'm glad Clara recovered. One of our girls has it now, and we are giving her vitamin water and food by hand. Thanks so much for your video; it gives us hope that our pullet will survive too.

I think I have wry neck. I'll show my wife this video and say that Ill have to isolate myself and that she will have to bring me food and massage my neck twice a day for a couple of weeks. Thanks!

Yes... this has been happening with one of our precious docile Roos. Come to find out, after lots of research and what a friend shared with me of her own experience... I learned that MEDICATED FEED can hinder absorption of some vitamins and minerals. It was suggested that I buy a tube of paste with selenium and vita E for goats.
So, twice a day, I’ve been giving him a wee-bit of the orange gel (a small amount, about the size of my little pinky nail). Also, every 2 or 3 hours, I hold his head over “miracle water” (freshly-minced garlic, honey, ACV with the Mother in warm water) and he drinks.
We’re praying and believing our wee Friedrich will make a complete turn around.

      P.S.
We switched all feed to unmedicated organic feed. It costs more, but we have less worry about our fine, feathered friends absorbing their nutrients.

Thankyou luc I got to check my duck see if she can have something similar. Unfortunately she was injured with a wound and she can’t move her neck still. Going to see if this helps.

How much of the selenium and vitamin E do you give them and how often a day do they get it

Hi I have a rooster with wry neck it started a week ago with him acting dizzy. And swaying his head to the right side. Slowly and slowly he has been getting better but then today all of the sudden he seems worse. It’s like a muscle spasm on the right side of his neck. We felt it and it was hard so we are massaging it. We have been giving him a syringe of vitamins and electrolytes everyday. He tried to eat yesterday but acted like he couldn’t extend his neck enough to eat the food but I know he could have. He pecked at it. Anyway these vitamins and electrolytes do have Vitamin E, but no selenium so I will go get some of that today. We love our rooster so much he is a barred rock too. 😢

I do believe I now know what it was.
I believe it was bacterial pneumonia. Because the shed has dirt floor and I don’t even know how old it is. We rent our place but this place was built in the 70s so I figured the shed was built then. So the soil has all that bacteria.
Then…. I ended up in the ER it’s bacterial pneumonia after cleaning and taking the shed floor….!

I think it's brought on by too small of enclosure or being cooped in too small of a coop. Probably too little or too much of one variety of food. Even though it's varieties, they need change ups to keep optimal health and plenty of room. I'm not suggesting they need a gigantic space but they definitely need space out of eachothers vision. Chickens especially young chickens can be pretty relentless when sorting out pecking order. As far as dosing,I'd start with a pill a day try it for close to a week . If no improvement is seen try 2. If you notice improvement after a week,I'd continue that until resolved. If improvement stagnates after only a couple week trial up it gradually to see if it helps. Just use common sense. Thanks!
