Silkie Chick with Wry Neck | Treating Torticollis

- I discovered yesterday that I have a silkie chick with wry neck. I hadn't heard of this before, but having done some research, wry neck (or torticollis as its official name) occurs for three main reasons:
1. Genetics
2. Vitamin deficiency
3. Chicken varieties with a domed skull such as silkies and polands
You cannot do a lot to heal a brain injury other than give it time. However, if the disorder is genetic or a vitamin deficiency, you can treat with vitamin E and selenium to try and correct it. The main thing is to make sure your chicken is eating and drinking as this becomes difficult with a twisted neck and can lead to death.
Treating torticollis and wry neck requires daily supplement of vitamin E and selenium - I'm going to try giving two capsules per day until the silkie chick shows signs of improvement. After 24 hours, this wry neck looks worse but that's to be expected as it takes some time for the vitamins to be absorbed. Hopefully, over time, this little one will improve.
Let's hope this little one survives!

I know. Poor little thing. It's a bit worse today but that's to be expected for a few days. Keep everything crossed!
You can feed them Tuna as it contains both Vitamin E and Selenium. Just use canned Tuna in oil or water and not Brine. Most chickens love meat so it shouldn't be an issue to isolate and feed the affected bird/birds. If the Tuna doesn't work, the supplements sure won't work as it is the same thing but less digestible and the supplements can cause liver/kidney damage if you give them for more than 2 weeks whereas Tuna will not cause organ damage.
We picked up a smooth sizzle with wry neck a year ago. It wasn't bad at first but then it got really bad, then it got better, then worse and back and forth but she never acted as though it effected her quality of life. She would hold her head straight and steady while she ate and drank just like a normal chicken but she would lay her head on her back or chest (upside down) when she relaxed. She would still dust bath, scratch, chase bugs, etc. Finally about a month ago she began holding her head consistently only with a slight tilt. A LOT of work went into our little "Broken Chicken" but she is just the sweetest thing.

It's really weird, isn't it? It can come and go, and other than the neck they seem perfectly fine. I'm glad your little one got better.
Sadly, this didn't work out well...it got worse and worse until the chick was in obvious distress. BUT...now I know what to do, if it ever happens again I hope for a different outcome.
Brimwood Farm I definitely understand. I was considering culling in the first couple months but my husband wanted to wait and see if she would get better as time went on since this was our first case and she was still eating, drinking and growing even at her worst. Unfortunately, although she's doing fine currently doesn't mean she won't regress sooner or later. If we feel it begins to effect her quality of life, culling will be the most humane option.
The gagging or gasping also predicts that it may have parasites as well.

Weirdest chicken disease I probably experienced was bumblefoot. I had a young rooster whose foot swoll up like there was a large marble under the skin. I found out it would kill them when it got this severe and swift action had to be taken. It was too late for antibiotics alone. I wrapped him with a towel over his wings and taped it down so he couldn't struggle, and got my dad to hold him. Then as gently as possible I made an incision in the foot and disgusting ooze started coming out. It was like a deep rooted cyst and I had to get it all out of there. Then I cleaned it thoroughly and put a bandage and plastic covering the foot. I moved him to a cage by himself on some fresh grass where there were no bird droppings on the ground to prevent reinfection and I pumped him full of antibiotics. He healed up extremely fast and turned out perfectly fine with no permanent damage to his foot. Oddly enough, his _other_ foot had two crooked toes, earning him the nickname "Bent Toe".
If you have a lot of chickens it's easy to overlook health issues like that, so it's good to do a weekly (or at least biweekly) "chicken check" where you grab each other of them and look them over for a few seconds. You also feel how heavy they are and if there's food in their crop. I also made sure they got a bit of oyster shell, minerals and vitamins in their diet, some fresh grasses and insects and small, occasional vitamin additives in their water. Big water containers sometimes need trace amounts of copper sulfate to prevent fungal infections and stuff. I don't have chickens any more but I learned a lot as a kid when I did!

I've never been able to bring silkies out of it, even with selenium and vit e treatment, vitamins in the water ect. It's a sad thing but they are very prone to getting wry neck.
My Silkie chick is about 6 weeks old and he does it, he just recently started doing it, I am going to try putting "nutri-drench for poultry" in his water, I hope it works!

Maam you save your hen kindly guide me my chiken devalop sikness five days ago i gave him total of1/4part of penciline (injection 5lac) orally twice a day chicken get up and in the evening like normal but little weak.next morning he was looking more weak with yellow watry poops i have made blunder of injecting ciprofloxacin 0.5ml as due to eid vet shops were closed and it was 2nd day of eid i injectef as chicken wake up with so high temperature not eating any thing i put pumpkin and cucumber juice in his mouth then i was worried for his so high temperature i gave him flygel for his stomach upset and pandol for temperature pinch of both but no symptom change at night his body was emiting heat out side he was getting so hot i crush 1/3 brufen and gave him and within 20 mins his temperature just stop coming out of his body next day i just gave him cucumber egg scrembled in water and put in his mouth temprature didn't come down i have to go out that day when i come back my chick neck was turned i thought as i come late chick is annoyed from me but in the morning he cant even stand with turned neck wants to eat but his neck shivers i put things in his mouth then i share pic and video with online consultant Tony he guide me to give him vit E as soon as possible the only hope i gave him evion capsul 400 mg(dl-alpha tecopheryl acetate) tony adviced me to give chick as much green and vit E as possible so i brought vita gold super also from market i am giving chick whatever i found healthy sunflower seed almonds seasonal fruits and little feed but i noticed there is infection inside so only food is not sufficient i gave him homeopath rani cock drops by al Noor company today is six day of chick illness same improved diet chick neck is 80 to 85% recovered but chicken cant stand walk or lift his wing but is couragous to live when i put food in its mouth i give positive response and most of the times ask for som more but cant do anything herself and sound of snore comes from him when i feed him sir guide plz what to give him in food in addition to vit E so he may stand and eat on its own quickly.plzzz sir you have saved deadly birds help me.

I honestly don't know. I was googling last night and some hens have utterly twisted necks, and others just drag their neck along the floor. Eek! So, this one isn't too bad. No balance issues at the moment, so fingers crossed.

Sadly the little one didn't make it. It got much worse and became weaker as a result. Got to a point where it was more distressed than happy so I made the decision to cull. :( I think it must've been a brain injury as the vitamin intake didn't help at all, even after a couple of weeks.
For me its been two days since my silkie had the neck problem and she recovered very well you dont even notice it anymore
my 9 months old silkie started to have a wry neck on Sunday and is getting pretty serious, her neck is totally twsited, she cannot balance and stand up, I have been feeding her selenium and multi-vitamin supplement in the water and fed to her in a syringe, she was still eatting the first 2 days but since last night and today, she's not eatting at all. I've been told 23 mch of selenium / kg each day (my silkie is about 1 kg), should I give her vitamin E supplement only instead of the multi-vitamin which contains Vitamin A, B, C and E? If sho how much to feed her a day. Since she's not eatting I can only put them in water and syringe into its' beck. what else can I do to help her?
I give vitamin E squeeze it on blueberries that I squish a little and hand feed them to her. I promise it works . I also feed her scrambled eggs for selenium. But you have to keep up on it or it will come back. But it does work. Putting it on blueberries helps you know that they do eat it .
s @redheadheatherj1 Thanks that's what I did to, fed her with Vitamin E and selenium with a boiled egg for the first 4 weeks, I saw her improve after 1 week and gradually after 5 weeks -then I heard people say we need to continue to do this for another 2 weeks - so I continued to feed her with Vit E and selenium - total for 7 weeks! she's now very healthy and has grown much bigger. The last 2 weeks she was able to eat normally - so I just hand-feed her the Vit E and selenium direct into her peak.
Vit E alone can't do much. You should have fed her Neurobion tab too
One of my chicks had it i gave her some vitamins and massage her neck every morning and night it helps....it didn't get worse
I got a couple that's doing it now but I think they're going to die
