Back in the late 90's, I was on the range at the Houston Open watching a friend get ready to play and Vijay was next to him hitting drivers off the deck. All of a sudden Vijay asks me to come over and check his alignment and clubhead position at the top. I asked him what he was aiming at and he said "The first C in that Coca-Cola track at the end of the range. I'm trying to fade it back to the second C." I told him his alignment was good and then he hits a dead solid perfect driver off the deck and it start at the first C but fades to the third C in Coca-Cola, a miss of about 10-15 feet! It easily traveled 285+ yards. He looks at me and says "see I keep missing my target." I just shook my head and laughed. He was one of the best ball strikers ever period.

Back in my playing days when I was pretty good I had one of those. I loved it. It was a great training tool. I didn’t use it a lot…I probably swung it like 10 times on the range before I started my practice session. My practice session didn’t last long either. Maybe another 10-15 minutes before my round. But anyway that thing really helped me to lengthen my backswing a little bit and also slow down my transition. It really helped me to hit the ball straighter.

    • @Whoopdido777

@@CB-rv2lj Officially I got down to a 1.2 USGA for a little while, but mostly I was a 2.0 during the last two years before I had to abruptly give up the game entirely due to injury. I was only 37 at the time.
Anyway, I’ll just tell you about my game. I used to be ok in high school, then pretty much stopped stopped for a while, then tried picking it up again and I was horrible. No point in even playing, but then I decided to go get fitted for clubs and everything changed. I went for the whole nine yards. Driver, 3 wood, hybrid, irons.
After I did that my long game became almost automatic. But I was never good around the greens though. Mediocre at best chipper and pitcher and downright poor putter. I really should have taken some lessons because I was obviously doing something wrong.
So, for you at least…I’d say to make sure your clubs fit you properly (you might be surprised) and it’s cliche but spend more time than you might want to or think is necessary practicing your short game.

How much confidence do you have to have to do this by the way. It's not enough to be able to do it, you have to be able to do it consistently enough that you're not at risk of shanking one into the crowd. A rec golfer hitting a teed ball could probably hit themselves in the face with it. The dispersion is insane! It really highlights how small a target PGA tour players hit consistently on the face.

Vijay will always be a PGA tour legend, and is undoubtedly one of the all time greats. Also he became World No 1 golfer, and secured the vast majority of his big wins during the time that Tiger Woods, Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and Retief Goosen were competing against him, together with many other great younger players.

    • @mikecook219
      @mikecook219 2 ปีที่แล้ว

A legend, no doubt. However, I wouldn’t say he became #1 when Tiger was at his “brilliant and dominant best”. Vijay became #1 in the world toward the end of the 2004 season, Tiger didn’t win a major in 2003 or 2004. It was actually a “slump” for Tiger which is still saying something. When Woods was at his dominant best, nobody touched him.
Between the 2002 US Open and the 2005 Masters (the length of time between Tiger majors) he won 15 of his 34 PGA TOUR titles, his hottest stretch of his career. Vijay won his last two tournaments (Barclays, Deutche Bank - big events, too) in 2008 after Tiger had his season-ending surgery post-US Open. Vijay has a couple signature wins while Tiger was in form but, respectfully, it’s not the way you’ve painted it. He secured a large number of wins picking up where Tiger temporarily left off (sorry, rest of the field).
I like Vijay, he’s probably taken more wedge grooves off in his career than the next 5 players combined. 34 wins, 3 Majors, Hall of Famer… it doesn’t need context but it does require some clarification from your framing of his best run compared to where Tiger’s game was in relation to his career-best.

This is a good example of how the laws of physics create force in a golf swing via acceleration of club head around hands. Just holding a club over head and dropping it will cause gravity to accelerate it at 32 ft. / sec / sec. The action of side bending and dropping the hands at the start of the downswing adds to that downward force and as the ball catches up with the hands the shaft is seen to be almost straight and it stays straight until his hands slow down starting as they pass his back leg at which point two things happen:
    1) the ball at the end keeps accelerating at the rate of gravity flying past the hands causing the shaft to bow forward ( Regular clubs do the same thing.
    2) As the shaft starts to bow forward he changes the angle of his back wrist simply by allowing the force pulling on the hands to pull it straight.
I learned to do the same thing in my swing. What the wrist action does is release the “lag” which was created by extending the back hand to the max in the downswing JUST BEFORE IMPACT. That wrist action timed with the point the force tries to bend the shaft forward ( acts to allow the club head to get that extra burst of acceleration before impact putting more force into the ball than if lag (via max extension in the back wrist) were maintained. VJ also uses ulnar deviation before impact which is the same wrist movement used when cracking a whip.
A whip cracks because the tip is breaking the sound barrier (~ 700 mph) due to the same cause and effect: The hand holding the whip handle stops and the whip portion accelerates past the stopped hands.
What causes his hands to show down? Resistance to his hips turning open all the way create by keeping his back foot on the ground. He raises his front heel in the back swing for maximum shoulder turn but observe how long during the downswing and finish he keeps his back heel on the ground and how he raises it up significantly before he turns the foot around.
It is is the release of the back heel that frees up the hips to turn from 45° open to face the target in the finish but he does not do that until the force of the mass on the end of the stick has been allowed time to pull his trail arm straight.
Keeping the back foot on the ground creates the resistance to allow the club to pull the trail arm straight. When it does it SLOWS DOWN THE CLUB HEAD by transmitting the considerable force remaining in the club head down the arm and body to the ground. Balanced is maintained while doing that in the same way you keep balance playing ‘tug-of-war” with a rope - plant the lead foot and lean the body mass back counter to the the direction the club is pulling.
The way VJ executes that post-impact extension so ideally is why he has such a slow and graceful finish. There is barely enough energy left in the club to force it to flip up and then back over his shoulder with a thumb-up “hitch-hiking” radial deviation of the both wrists which then causes the elbows to bend in the finish.
His is a very efficient swing because he allows the club force to do all the work, which is the point of using a training aid like the Orange Whip which exaggerates the force. But save your money. The same drill done with a kitchen broom stuck in the belly works just as well.

That’s not an orange whip that’s a SKLZ swing trainer. I have one and it helps with my path and tempo.
But the fact that he’s hitting drives with it tells you how awesome the man is as a golfer.

I agree..hes underrated. I saw him hit an upside down 6 iron, left handed and made it stick on the green from like 160-170. If he just would have stopped all that "rags under the arms" connection nonsense...it RUINS swings as it's a misconception for the most part.

The dumbest sports comment ever is one that Steve Sands mentioned here. I think Ted Williams said it....the toughest thing to do in sports is to hit a round baseball with a round bat. Just a nonsensial statement (not even sure the 90 miles per hour part of the quote is true). I mean, it has to be the dumbest quote ever. There are thousands of things in sport tougher than that. Ted Williams was a liar, as well. He said something dumb about being able to see the seems on the ball or something ridiculous, plus that he divided up the plate into like 90 sections. Absurd stuff.
