  • In this tutorial I explain how to use the L*a*b Adjustments tool, which is one of the tools I use the most in rawtherapee.
I first quickly explain the different sliders.
Starting at around 4:50 I do actually process the image using just the L*a*b Adjustments tool.
Done in rawtherapee 5.6, though the L*a*b Adjustments have been around for awhile, so this works also fine in older versions.
Further information can be found in the "Lab Adjustments" chapter of the official documentaion:

Thanks for such a good explanation of the LAB tool. I have not been able to make my images as good as they could be as I did not understand how to do this. Very happy I came across your tutorial

Hey I understand I'm two years late, but thank you for this video - it's very clear, well-described, and helpful!

Wow. I've used just the basics in RT to edit my RAW files but as I delve more into the complexities of RT, I realize how much I appreciate users like you who share their valuable knowledge and provide a bridge for beginners like me to learn such a fantastic program. Thank you!

That's a very informative video, all very well explained. I've used the Lab space for many years now (although recently, I also played around more with RGB space, also both together) and have come to like Lab a lot. Actually, I quite quickly moved to Lab when I started with RawTherapee many years ago because with RGB space you are always also affecting saturation (you mentioned this as well) which did not fit my desired style.
So a lot of what you described in the video was not new to me - but thanks a lot for the explanation of the HH control (I actually didn't know that you are simply changing a hue to the left or right neighbor)! And I also got some inspiration on how I could use CC, LC and CL.
BTW, what's your opinion on first applying some improvements through the general lightness, contrast and saturation sliders for Lab and then some more fine-tuning with the Lab curves?

Hi I often do that: first aplly general improvements using lightness, contrast etc. and then use the durves for more specific adjustments. That is a perfectly fine approach!

Hello, greetings from Serbia ☺ please can you tell me - how can I apply changes in some specific color in picture? For example, to get sky saturation high - increase saturation of blue in the sky above castle

Hi, thank you. Use the CL curve in the Lab tool. I explain it in this video.

Thank you for this. I don't suppose you know how to remove grain from old photos? I'm restoring a few pics from the 1940s and 50s.

you could try the different noise reduction tools in rawtherapee. Otherwise I would point you to the pixls.us forum, where rawtherapee, darktable and other image processing software is discussed and many of the developers roam. There are many very knowledgable people there who might be able to help you.
