    Raw Therapee Basics: The HSV Equalizer Image Processing Tutorial
    PLEASE NOTE: Video compression can make super-smooth backgrounds look banded sometimes due to lack of available colours in the video colour space.
    In today's Raw Therapee video I'm going to demonstrate the basics of the HSV Equalizer and how we can control the individual colour channels in our images with great accuracy - ENJOY!

    Andy, thanks so much for the detailed demonstration of the HSV Equalizer. One would be hard pressed to find one this good on the web, I think. It will be interesting to see your take on the Color Toning Module. Mike

      Cheers Mike, good of you to say 🍻🍻 I'll revisit the CT module, but it's something I personally prefer to do with layers and blend modes in Ps if I'm honest.

    Excellent video. RT really is amazingly powerful and it for sure is a fight to try and figure it out does not help that the docs are mostly from a engineer perspective and go way over the average photographers head. These videos are indeed a great help to figuring out the tools and what they do. It really makes you wonder. RT has great quality due to much more advanced algorithms imagine if it had the ease of use and entry that Lightroom has... It would probably take over the world to be honest lol. One thing open source software never had was usability / ease of entry for some reason things end up a bit overly complex during the process of giving control to the user.

      Cheers Bill🍻🍻 And I couldn't agree with you more - I think a lot of folk find RT a little bewildering - I know this old sod did, and still does in parts😆

      @@AndyAstbury You should look at the Retinex documentation..... Makes me wonder if it is worth all the extra effort. When you look at the main competitor in the commercial space to Lightroom (Capture One). You get the ease of use + a better Demosaic but still has a few of the issues as lightroom but has much better local adjustments to handle some of them.
      I have yet to find a commercial application which lets you handle false colors from the demosaic process. Which is a problem especially for macro where it becomes more obvious it exists. In landscape 80% of the cases of false color can be ignored because you just don't see it unless at like 300%. With macro it just sticks out like a sore thumb at 1:1.
      So in a way it seems RT is very worth it but in another way a lot of the times it makes you mad when you can't get it to do what you want because you are too dumb for it lol.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You do make me smile Bill😆 I don't want to look at Retinex - please don't make me!
      And you're dead right about macro, it can lead to some big hurdles to jump in terms of pattern interference and false colour, and nope, landscape shots rarely suffer from it, though that does make sense when you think about.
      CapOne - personally I can't get on with it - keep reinstalling it as a trial every now and again to see if I change my mind, but crikey it isn't worth the dough in my book unless you're a Fuji user perhaps.

      @@AndyAstbury Yea Capture One is very pricy but the improvements are not really large enough unless fuji or a studio photographer. Has some really nice features though I really like their levels tool as well as their clarity tool. For some reason their clarity does not halo quite as easily as lightroom.
      Yes but after this video I think I am for sure going to have to go with RT as my editor. I tried darktable but I keep finding weird issues with it on windows that no one else ever seems to have.
      Maybe some day I will be good enough to make tutorials for RT.

    Nice tip. I been making changes to myBase profile to include my preferred tool settings even if I don't have it turned on. Comes in handy when you do want to use the tools. Also been going back through my archive and reprocessing old images. It is always fun to see what RAW processing software can do with files taken with older cameras (a lot as it turns out, no need to upgrade your cameras, upgrade your software).

    Hi Andy, super helpful video as always. I tend to use the LH/CH/HH tools in the L*a*b panel since I feel it gives me more control (especially in the hue department since you can't push it that far lol).
    Is there any reason you prefer the HSV tool / RGB color space?

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cheers Uli 🍻🍻 To answer your question - it's not that I prefer one over the other really, I'm just picking my way through the tools for the Lightroom users who want to get into exploiting the power of RT more than from any other motivation. And us old Photoshop farts do like our HSV 😆 But I will do a video on the L*ab panel one day - with its 6 curves and 3 equalizers.....😱😱😱😱

    i am a portrait photographer, can you make a video on portrait retouching? I wonder how raw therapee affects skin tones, gradations and smooth contrast. I'm new to the software and I love your in-depth videos

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  ปีที่แล้ว

      Oooo.....I don't make a habbit of shooting people! But if I have to, then I use the frequency seperation technique in Photoshop for the biggest part of the retouching. If I had to use a FOSS raw processor for that, then I'd opt for the Dartable option to make use of the masking.

    Hello sir, very interesting and instructive video. I howerver stumbled into an issue while using this tool. Indeed, no changes seem to appear on the picture I'm working on, even if I change everything on the curves (like you did when you changed the red tint and it became cyan). Same for some other settings like certain ones in the exposure section for example. Any ideas ?
    Have a nice day.

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I take it that you have activated the control with the power button to the left of the panel title - sounds obvious I know but quite a few do make that mistake.

    So, we have HSV EQ, Lab adjustment, and color toning with masks - but I struggle to grasp which to use when and why?

    • @AndyAstbury
      @AndyAstbury  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which to use is dependent on your image, and what you want to do to it. But think of color correction regions as HSV EQ on steroids with more precission - both make adjustments based on colour.
      Lab makes adjustments based on luminosity.
