  • Realistic Fur Texture in Graphite Pencil
    In this video I will give an overview of the process, tools and materials used to create the realistic texture of fur and hair by using a couple of darts to indent the texture into the paper with various grades of pencil then being applied over the top. As a wildlife artist I find this is a great technique to use to create the different types of fur that are on this picture of an Asiatic Lion Cub.

    Beautiful work Jamie, your videos are so good. I find it interesting that you work upright with graphite, it's something I've just never been able to get the hang of!

      Thank you so much. When I started working at shows years ago I had to work at an easel because of space and actually found that I liked it, I think its just what you get used to. Thanks again and good luck with your work its stunning,

    I just found your page. Your work is Amazing Sir. I just started drawing about 8 months ago and now looking at your art and your technique I feel I have to start all over again lol. I love the dart technique and the texture it makes. Since finding your page I've watched several hours nonstop of your videos. Thank you

      Thank-you so much Nathan and I am so glad you found the videos interesting. The one thing with art is that it doesn't matter how long you have been doing it you never stop learning. If you ever have any questions please feel free to ask as I am always glad to be of help wherever I can.

    Is it best to indent as you go through the drawing or do a large/full indenting before you go in with the graphite. Really admire your work and thanks for sharing.

      Thank you so much for the comment. I find it is best to indent small areas at a time, roughly about one square centimetre and then apply the pencil over the top. Two reasons for this are it is easier to keep track of what you have indented and the other is to avoid strain in the hand. Another thing I would say is that don't expect the effect to work immediately but as the area grows the effect stands out more. Hope this was of help.

    Hi Jamie , I love your videos… do you recomend to scratch with the dart all the drawing or to go step by step..?!
    Thank you so much
    Bye for now

      Hi Maurizio, Go step by step. Although, virtually all the drawing ends up being indented you only want to do very small areas at a time. I usually just do a few strokes with the dart before applying pencil over the top. There are a few reasons for this. The first one being that it just makes it easier to see what you have done, the next one is because it is easy to end up repeating patterns, whereas just doing little bits at a time creates a much more random appearance and the last reason is that it is a very repetitive movement and after doing it for a while your hand does actually start to ache but by constantly switching between the dart and the pencil this doesn't become an issue. Remember, as well to make the indentations easier to see when you are working on the picture you can shine a light across at an angle creating shadow in the indentations thus making them much easier to see. It is so nice to know that you have found the videos useful and to know that you are trying this technique out. Also remember that it is a combination of the pattern created with the dart and the pattern that is then drawn over the top with the pencil. Ciao, Jamie

      Grazie Jamie …
      I will start my drawing project of a tiger portrait by drawing first the eye in a larger scale than I usually do.. We’ll see 😊

    I usually work on a A3 size paper, so can I get the same affect on smaller size paper?

    • @JamieBoots
      @JamieBoots  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes any size is fine. I find about 300 gram works best lighter thinner papers can tend to tear. Also the paper needs to be tough so 100% cotten is ideal. Hope this was of help.

      @@JamieBoots Yes, thank you. I thought it wouldn't work because of the size of dart tool you are using. Different size of hair is on smaller size paper.

    • @JamieBoots

      @@BMJArt I only use the thicker dart for larger work generally I use the finer one. For very fine work I will also use a 9H pencil to indent texture as well as it does not produce much in the way of tone. The only 9H I would recommend is a Cretacolor avoid the Derwent one as it just breaks.

    Autocorrect messed my word up pastelmat

    • @JamieBoots
      @JamieBoots  15 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I have never used Pastelmat so I don't know. I would say try it on a piece of scrap first to see if it works. I always use 300gram Hot Press watercolor papers as I need a smooth tough surface when I start indenting texture. Thank you for the question.
