I have personally used this technique for over 20 years and would say it is incredibly effective not only for fur and hair but to create all sorts of textures. Personally I find that for the effect to work the best the texture needs to be densely packed and to use a blunt pencil to draw a fur pattern over the top this can then be diminished in some areas with a blending stump to create depth and highlighted in others with a kneadable eraser. If you find it difficult to see the indentations you can shine a light across the paper at an angle and this will cast a shadow in the lines making them much easer to see. Hope this is also helpful.

Lots of great detail on video and with voiceover. But - when drawing the cat initially with the embossing tool, seems that then.....every aspect beyond seems to have omitted the embossed part. Maybe I am just missing some aspect, or sending this comment too soon. Thank you, Gemma. I appreciate your tutorials.

Do you work in sections on the portrait or do you lightly emboss the whole portrait? Awesome by the way. I’ve looked at a few different methods and this is my favourite by far❤

Not for me. I have a lot of reasons for not liking embossing tools, but two pop quickly to mind. One is that you can erase a mistake made this way. Two is that I can always tell when an embossing tool has been used, and I HATE the look. Most may not know or care, or even have a clue what embossing s, but I do notice, and I hate the look. It just seems crude and lazy. It's certainly a distraction.

I wouldn’t call it crude or lazy. If you have the opportunity to use tools at your disposal why not use it? At the end of the day, drawing should be fun not stressful and if there is a way for some to draw without issue it’s completely fine to use these tools. So if you don’t want to use them that completely fine, it’s your art so you decide you will do. Calling someone lazy is very ignorant and immature.

Hi , Meow ! Your opinion is very agressive lol. Really ? Though ? Coming to comment your distain onto someone elses hard work , time & effort is toxic . Constructive criticism has a format ; firstly you always compliment the artist & their work ,
Tell them what you love & what they did WELL !
secondly you follow with a subtle hint of how you feel it could be better .
Not capitalise the word HATE or indulge in toxic slurs like lazy , or vile , or repeatedly project how it effects you negatively ! Three times you highlighted your distain.
      Its not on…
Go somewhere else with an artist that caters to your preference !!
Not slag off someone else’s work & technique .
      Because you hate it !
Maybe you hate it , because you cant do it properly .
Or are not as astute as what you may think.
      You sound Unprofessional
      And talking about lazy
You sound lazy in your opinions and converse .
      🤦‍♀️
