  • This highly detailed drawing of a Gyrfalcon was done using graphite pencils with the highest level of detail being achieved by using the indenting technique to create texture with a dark background being utilized to create a dramatic appearance. This is a timelapse of a step by step class that is available on SkillShare.

    The falcon is amazing, but what also caught my attention is the incredibly smooth and deep blackness of the background. No pencil strokes... simply perfect

      Thank you the even appearance of the background is down to lighting the picture from both sides to prevent sine. It is difficult to see on camera but there is a slight mottled appearance to it due to the tone being applied using a circular motion. The paper makes a difference when it comes to getting a dark tone and the paper i used for this picture was St Cuthberts Saunders Waterford 300gram Hot Press I also use Arches Aquarelle. It is surprising but paper does make a difference when it comes to darker tones.

    So gifted. Love your work. The video itself is art as well.
    I continue to try the indenting technique with very poor results. Never know if it’s the paper or pressure I apply. You make it look easy!

      Thank you so much. The 2 papers I use are St Cuthberts Saunders Waterford and Arches Aquarelle and both are around 300g Hot Press. The Arches is incredibly tough and harder to indent but does give a fantastic result, so I would recommend the St Cuthberts for starting out and that is what the falcon in the video is drawn on. Another thing that does made a difference is the surface that you work on as this needs to be very firm so for example I always have the paper on a firm smooth surface such as MDF. Some drawing boards can have a soft texture and the technique doesn't work as well on those equally if you have another piece of paper or card underneath your drawing paper again this will diminish the effect. I hope this is helpful and again, thank you for watching and taking the time to comment.

    What is the tool you use for indenting?

    • @JamieBoots
      @JamieBoots  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the comment. The tool is a dart it just has the tip blunted so as not to cut the paper.

      Thank you so much. I used a makeup sponge to apply 3B graphite powder as a base tone and then used a 9B graphite block over the top to finish,.
