I was asked to write a foreword for a book about The Rocketeer soundtrack. Even though I can hum every note of the main title from memory I felt I should listen to it one more time. I am now sitting here in awe of James Horner's immense talent and his ability to capture the visceral essence of the freedom of flight in a handful of notes. I wipe away a tear every time I hear this beautiful piece of music. Thank you, James.

I do too, Joe! Your film hits so many moments for me going back to the first time I watched it with my dear friend, mentor. Peavy and Cliff had a real-world analog in a pair of characters full of aviation-hi jinx, let me tell you!
Recalling the anniversary of a certain first un-supervised solo flight, James Horner’s piece is in the background, orchestrating everything extant toward ….. an exhilarating… takeoff! Thank you sirs!! … 🛫

Just rewatched this movie in the theater and the score was the highlight. Easily one of Horner's best. Those low bass notes and brass emphasizing the general melody make chills every time. Romantic, exciting and identifiable. Modern scores lack such humility and warmth.

I haven’t seen The Rocketeer in at least 15 years. And I don’t really play piano anymore aside from a few songs I’ve memorized. I don’t even own a piano. But when I recently visited my parents and sat down casually at their piano and started keying around, the melody of this song (or some approximation of it) just kinda came out. I don't know how or why. Apparently, this score and film touched me so deeply growing up, that now at 30+ years old, it popped into my brain and I just started playing it. Something about this theme touches me at a soul level.
RIP Mr. Horner and thank you for your excellent work. I pray Disney doesn’t screw up this film or alter your score when they remake it.

I Remember when This Movie was out on VHS In The Year 1991, I was at the local Blockbuster Video with a Friend of mine named Sarah, I went with her to the local blockbuster video to rent some movies, we split up, and i started walking in the new release aisle of the place, I started looking at some movies, until a movie "Fried Green Tomatoes" Caught My Attention, I picked it up and started reading the back of it, I was reading it for over a hour and a half, when a Blockbuster Video Employee walked down the aisle and placed this Amazing Movie on the Rack, until i noticed it, I put the "Fried Green Tomatoes" Movie down and Picked this Amazing Movie up, and started reading the back, I decided to rent it, I Rented the Movie and My Friend Sarah had also rented some movies, We went back to our homes, That Night My Husband Jim and I, and our two children named Timmy and Zoe was in the living room of our house and started watching the movie, It had become our tradition to watch a movie Every Saturday and Sunday Night.

Such a magical score to a magical movie. The piano and flutes (?) in the beginning just take you into another world, and the rest of the score just screams adventure! I'd always wanted a sequel, but now, I fear that no sequel can do it justice.

He has inspired me since I was barely able to comprehend music. My first song I ever recognized was from American Tale. As a young kid I obsessed over the Rocketeer and building legos before that Wrath of Kahn was my favorite which he composed. When I was in high school you did Titanic and I was blown away at what you had done. Then you did Mask of Zorro and I still cherish those tracks and find them both soothing and moving. When I studied for my ATP as a pilot it was his score for Amazing Spider man I kept on repeat to keep me driven. This man literally scored my life and I will miss him so much. Thank you for all the amazing gifts you've bestowed us. You will be deeply missed.

One of the founding scores for my appreciation of film music. I still remember running into the mall to get a new score while my mom waited in the car. I continue to appreciate it's beauty and majesty all these years later.

This score is supposed to capture the feeling of flying in the sky. It’s an orchestral theme for pilots that was written by a musician who was a pilot himself as well as a great film composer. It successfully captures the exhilaration and exaltation of flight.
