- The Rocketeer movie filming locations. Join me as we go on an adventure from Santa Maria, CA to Piru, CA and the greater Los Angeles area, looking for the filming location to the 1991 movie The Rocketeer.

As a massive fan of THE ROCKETEER (both comic book and movie), this was a real treat! it's a shame Disney doesn't care about the movie and didn't put any extras on the Blu-ray as what you did here would've been perfect! You really did a great, wonderful job. I always wondered where some of the scenes were shot and it's interesting to see what still exists. Great work!

Your excellent work here brings back so many great memories! I grew up near Griffith Park and loved watching Radar Men from the Moon with Commando Cody as a child which is where I believe the concept for The Rocketeer came from. I took my sons to see the film when it came out and we loved it. In 1992 I took them to Disney World and Universal, and we were fortunate enough to see the Bulldog Cafe along with the Rocket pack, helmet and leather jacket that was on display at the time. It was sad though as the Gee Bee that Howard Hughes gave to Cliff at the end of the movie was there and literally falling apart due to weather. I've built RC airplanes for 50 years and am building a 30% Gee Bee that matches the one in the film. It's the same size as the one hanging in the museum. I've always loved period films, and The Rocketeer is one that we never tire of watching. I wish there could've been a sequel. Thank you so much for the effort you've put into this, I truly appreciate it!

I remember the Disney Adventures magazine. I would anxiously wait for every new edition to show up in the grocery store checkout line. The Rocketeer is such a favorite film.

Stanley, thank you for this. I wasn't a comic book kid growing up. They just didn't do anything for me. It wasn't until I discovered the original Rocketeer short stories comics after I got out of the Navy. As much as I love the MCU now, The Rocketeer will always be my favorite superhero! I traveled to WDW back in '94 and got to see the Bulldog Cafe and Gee Bee plane on the Disney/MGM backlot your. That was fun but it looked half-scale to the on-screen set used. Also, around the opening of Disney's California Adventure 20 years ago, you could meet and greet w/ The Rocketeer, standing by Howard Hughes' helioplane, in the Condor Flats area. Thanx again for your time and effort put into this video.
Yes, you saw the real Bulldog on the Disney MGM studios backlot. That is so cool, I wish I could have seen it in person. And you saw the Gee Bee. They still have some Rocketeer props lying around at MGM studios. I hope to go there someday . . . before they are gone!
My kids love this movie. I remember seeing it when I was about 12 in the theaters. It brought me great joy to introduce it to them.

I've been inside the Ennis House. It was during the restoration. It's very much like the Millard House (La Miniatura) here in Pasadena. Absolutely beautiful.

I was looking for a video like yours today of all days since it was 30 years ago tonight that I got to see the movie in theaters for the first time and it's been one of my favorites ever since. This is everything I wanted from a Filming Locations video. Very well put together and clearly alot of research went into it. Kudos to you good sir. 👍

I enjoyed watching this video very much. Thank you for making it. I've been a big fan of The Rocketeer for 30 years ever since 1991. I have the movies on VHS from my childhood, DVD, and then on Blu-Ray. I even had the behind the scenes magazine back in 1991. My dad got the Rocketeer Nintendo NES game for me for Christmas of 1992. I LOVE the South Seas Club and the Bulldog Cafe. The Art Deco atmosphere of the 1930's was amazing.
Those are some great Rocketeer items you had as a kid. It would have been so cool if Kenner or Hasbro made Rocketeer action figures back then . I feel Disney dropped the ball and didn’t market it well at all.
Yes the architecture in the movie is so good, I always see new things whenever I watch it .

I saw The Rocketeer back in 1991 it was a good movie with an awesome cast. Today I still like The Rocketeer. I have a couple of The Rocketeer comics books and I have The Rocketeer anniversary pin. Also, that was thoughtful of your mother to buy you a new drone.

Well done! Very informative and entertaining video. You did such a great job showing these locations, especially with the areas you weren't able to physically visit due to the COVID restrictions. Watching your video once again made me appreciate how underrated this classic movie actually is. Thanks for sharing this video. I must admit, many of the areas that you shared, especially Santa Maria and Piru, were areas I lived in, yet I had no idea were used for locations to the Rocketeer.

I had never been to Piru, and would have never have known those valleys were used for the rocketeer either . I learned Piru is in a lot of other movies and tv shows also.

You and your cohost asked Billy in the minute with Jenny’s dorm , where that building was located ... and he said, “I can’t remember? I think it was done on a soundstage ?” ... and you and your cohost both were skeptical lol
But I can’t blame Billy for not remembering, he was probably at that location for one or two days thirty years ago!

Great job on the video! It just dawned on me that The Rocketeer and LaLa Land have some interesting things in common- they both used the Rialto Theatre and Griffith Observatory as well as the WB backlot. Also, Hollywood filmmaking is a major part of both plots!

Funny story - I went to university in Ealing, London and a couple of years later saw many of my haunts in Monty Python sketches.
Alas, I live quite a long way from London in a little town called Kettering. The only thing ever filmed here was Les Miserables. In fact Hugh Jackman showed up to my local gym during the shooting. Oh and Superman 4 was filmed where I work.

@@hannes_lutzenberger I can’t wait to get back down to LA and check out the house location and a couple other things - my biggest setback now is , I haven’t had two days off in a row since June. My employer is super short staffed and I’ve had to work 6 day weeks. Once that changes - I’m heading back to LA!

great video! Really enjoyed this retrospective. I remember seeing the Rocketeer, the day it came out, as a grade school kid who loved all things aviation.
I was always disappointed that the film did not do as well in theaters. This was the same year as the Gulf War. I also remember watching it many times on the Disney Channel.
Yeah I remember seeing it in the theaters as well, and being bummed that there was no sequel even thought they set it up. I read that Billy Campbell was signed on for two sequels and Jennifer Connolly was signed on for another sequel ... but it just didn’t do well enough at the box office :/

Another interesting prop location find for you. I’m an Orlando resident of 24 years and huge Rocketeer fan, and so far as I know the original yellow and black Gee Bee from the start of the film is at the Fantasy of Flight museum just southwest of Orlando right next to I-4 near Lakeland. I’ve never had the chance to visit, but have seen many pictures. Also, the AMC Pleasure Island theaters (now AMC Disney Spring) used to actually host world premieres of Disney movies in the very early 90’s. One of which was Dick Tracy in 1990, but I’ve found and saved pictures of the theater in 1991 with Rocketeer decoration, and even some period cars from the film outside.
Oh that’s so cool . If I ever get over to Orlando I’m going to go check out that flight museum and see the Bee Gee. Thanks for the tip!

Also, there is an excellent company that makes extremely high quality clothing, including many many equally high quality reproductions of movie clothing and accessories. One of which happens to be the iconic leather jacket from The Rocketeer at the link below. They also have reproductions of the boots and pants as well. I’ve wanted so many of their items for crazy nice Halloween costumes, but they are pretty pricey. They sell all of the handful of items for a full Joker outfit, from The Dark Knight. Hey, the bulldog is in the back patio area of the historic Idle Hour in north Hollywood, you can see it from google maps
Hi there, yes there is a Bulldog at the ideal hour cafe , it is a very similar bulldog , but not unfortunately the one from the Rocketeer. I was actually going to show that one in my video... but I forgot to go to the idle hour. That same bulldog used to be at the Peterson Automotive museum back in the 90’s and I saw it as a kid and I totally thought it was the one from the Rocketeer.
Thanks for reminding me of this Bulldog , I will show it when I go back to LA to see Peevy’s House.

As a matter of fact, this place was used and in the movie Saving Mr. Banks. It's a great movie and it's on Disney Plus. But this movie helped with the movie Mary Poppins.

We used to go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Rialto Theater. I can't believe it's a church now. Lets go down the street to the Canoe House, have a Mai Tai and drown our sorrows.

@@StanleyFoss There were plans to renovate. A long while back I had heard that some celebrity was interested in turning it into a music venue, but Mosiac took over. They've restored and renovated it, but it's still a church.
I used to live in Stevenson Ranch. Had no idea what was just up the street. As a kid, ever since Blade Runner, I wanted to live in the Ennis house. Very good set they built. I would have said it was the real interior.
Yeah so much RV and movie history all around Stevenson Ranch area.
Same - I would love to get to go inside the Ennis House.
I read that all the interior shots of Blade Runner were also recreated in a sound stage . Pretty crazy.

I have a feeling that the bulldog is gone, Disney did not take care of their Backlot props. We visited several times in the 90's, I remember seeing the hover car from Blade Runner slowly rot away during that time.

By February 2020, it was announced that Azia Squire wrote a new draft for the sequel, which will be released exclusively on Disney's streaming service, Disney+. J. D. Dillard was set to direct. In August 2021, the title The Return of the Rocketeer was announced. Ed Ricourt was hired to write a new draft of the screenplay, with David Oyelowo and his wife Jessica serving as producers, while David may also star as the title role. The plot will center on a former Tuskegee Airman who inherits the rocket pack suit and the heroic mantle.
In November 2022, Dillard announced that he was no longer attached to direct as he wanted to take "a breather from period aviation" after having made Devotion.
I hope something gets made, even a Disney + series would be cool. I still would rather it stick closer to Dave Stevens original comic with Cliff, Jenny(Betty), and Peavy, … but I hope anything Rocketeer related gets green lit 👍🏻

This movie is also a read along with the pictures from the movie but at Disneyland in Tomorrowland you can hear music from the movie. For this person, this movie came out in the same year as Beauty and the Beast.

Any update on the Bulldog Café location? Is the gate still closed? Google maps shows a few other streets from different directions :-) Or another drone flight would be possible :-)
I emailed the owners of the property, but they never replied. A drone shot might be the best way to see it now. I remember looking at backroads, but I’m pretty sure they are on private property? I need to examine them again. Thanks for the reminder!
