    The river Taff often burst its banks, causing floods and health problems in Cardiff. In 1797 local magistrates said a straight new river channel should be dug (east of what's now Sophia Gardens).
    But If River floodplains are built on what do you expect ?
    Floodplains are areas that are prone to flooding during heavy rainfall or snowmelt. Building in these areas increases the likelihood of property damage and loss of personal belongings during flood events.

    • @vannustube
      @vannustube 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      i want to comment pointing out these houses are old...
      ...but it sounds like we've been building on floodplains for over 200 years!

    • @hendrixinfinity3992
      @hendrixinfinity3992 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +5

      It's the routing of the river that's the problem. The course of most rivers is not natural and is altered to allow building around it. What that means is there is nowhere for the floodwater to spread out over.
      Well drained cities on floodplains exist, just look at the entire Netherlands.

      The problem is it's becoming much more frequent. Ponty flooded back in the 80's, but not again until 2020. Now twice in 4 years. That is not normal

      Na somthing has been changed on the Taff's flood management. It just didn't rain enough to have this level of reaction. That street of cottages hasn't flood since the fortified it when I was a kid. I'm pushing 40. The water is backing up in ponty for some reason. Cardiff is downstream. Wounder who's changed shit?

      @@SD-vy7gjSeems like someone's been diverting water back into the river itself. Like the guy above said theyre building on natural flood plains thus putting extra strain on the river. Unless they build a 10ft wall to the sea its going to continue. Its probably some bell end in the council trying to throw up some homes for a kick-back.

      Good advice. I was shown a beautiful house for sale at a good price. Noticed some metal fames on the bottom of the door and asked what they were, the seller frowned and said that's for the the flood barriers when the river overflows. You need to be cautious and aware of flood risk these days.

    This flooding results from more council cost-cutting. I bet the people affected by this flooding wish the council had dredged the river more frequently. The River Taff was last dredged in 2017. The council opted not to fund further dredging, deeming the increase in material since 2017 to be negligible.

Add in 16 bridges in just 3 miles and it's just not feassible or helpful. The goal is to stop the captail, coastal, city Cardiff, to the south, from flooding. And so Over the last 5 years , when it rain too hard, ponty floods instead of cardiff... dot dot dot.

    Now households told Not to drink the water 💦. Who on earth wants to live in the Rhonda Valleys?. If you live higher up, on some of their Mountainous Hill,s there is always a threat for Landslides coverng any Buildings in its way. The choice is to live many miles from any Rivers, and the Seaside's, and definitely not on or near Mountain size Hills . Flat land is a better choice I suppose?.😮

      Is that the one at Abergavenny you refer to??? Downloaded an interesting PDF on it after being informed. Had no idea but then it's not as though they wanted to advertise it I suppose. It's quite heavily guarded but I wouldn't want anwalk around personally!
