I'll never forget seeing a C-4 corvette for the first time. I was 7 and we were driving out of the mall in Longview Texas and a gold 84 was driving in. This was an era where many 1970s cars were still on the road. Even 60s cars. It looked like a space ship. A gold spaceship.
YUP! Funny thing you say that, in 1998 I bought a used '96 Sebring Silver Collector Edition and one of my then-coworkers on his first ride in it dubbed it "the mothership"! Seems like these days the C4 doesn't get much love for its wedge-shaped looks but I still think it's one of the most beautiful cars ever made.
Was it the two-tone gold/brown (really more of a light bronze/dark bronze)? That's my favorite C4 look. It even had metallic-looking bronze leather inside.
You should try to locate the designer of the 84 interior to explain why they felt the need to place that bread box of a pad in front of the passenger. Even when I was a kid I thought it looked weird and out of place. Shout out to Curious Cars for the photos of this car. I recognize that house from their videos. Fun channel as well.
@@marko7843 I thought that too. But I read somewhere that it wasn’t the case and that it actually would have been too dangerous to place an airbag that close to the passenger. So it has always baffled me.

I remember riding in these C4 as a kid.. Even in fairly new ones, the cowl shake and plastic squeaks were unbearable.. But, it didn't matter. It was a Corvette! Sweet memories..
Well, I can't give you anything on that but can tell you the weather down here in FL is for once pleasantly crisp and DRY(!) and we have a good month or two left before the miserable heat and humidity returns--but then I'm on the east coast so I can't speak for what Bill's dealing with, hoping he's as "chipper"" as those proverbial Canadians over there! :D
Personally I love the C4. It's my favorite generation in the car's history. For some reason there is this faction of the Corvette community that just hates the C4 with a powerful passion and they can't exactly explain why. It seems as if that in this group it's just required to hate the C4 like how you were supposed to hate certain people in high school but nobody could say why.
Just so everyone knows, there is 1 1983 corvette and it is in the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Kentucky, I visited 2/3 years ago, and it is an amazing place to visit. I went during covid, and the plant was closed to visitors, but I am going back as soon a time allows. The Corvette Muesum is a great bucket list trip and I assure, you will not be disappointed!!!!!
Many years ago I bought a used '87, then as time went on I went through a couple of used early 90's models. After having my introduction to Corvette via the '87, I never really liked or could get used to the 90's dash. I know most people don't like the digital dash, but I loved it the whole time I had the car, and missed it when I got the newer, better versions. 🙁🙁 I'd love to drive one of these again, just for the nostalgia!
If you’re going to buy an 84-89 Corvette make sure all of the electronics, especially the instrument cluster are working, 20 years ago when my family had a Corvette-only shop, the clusters in those years were a nightmare to repair. At that time it cost 500 dollars on average to buy a rebuilt unit, so when you’re looking to purchase one make a list of everything you see that’s broken on the car, check all the plastic and the electronics before you make an offer on the car. The door panels have a tendency for the mounting studs to break off and once again 20 years ago they were 50 dollars each and they were always broken. Oh yea the headlights will need the main drive gear replaced if they’re stuck in the up or down position. I’ll leave you with one last thing, all glass tops will get stress cracking covering the whole top, it won’t hurt anything and you mainly see it from the inside. So it’s only cosmetic and if you buy another glass top it will do the same.
In 87 or 88 they redid the suspension and it's known for being a substantial improvement but they didn't redo the dash until 90 so those late-80s are really the best of both worlds: improved suspension with the original dash.
At the time the Bose was radically impressive. It did feel like you were listening to one of the best systems in the world. It would go amazingly loud and hold the tone etc. I spent lots of time in a new 84 back in the day
I owned a '96 and I'd say the sound was more than decent for a factory car system, though I'd describe the bass as a bit of "one note bass" plenty of it but not tight and detailed, not surprising as it had the Bose tuned waveguide setup in the back as opposed to a "real" subwoofer in order to save space, otherwise it was surprisingly good, very balanced sound with the bass and treble controls set centered most of the time. Only real issue I had was the CD player was a little finicky, it would refuse to play some discs that other players had no trouble with. I looked into changing out the head unit and found that it wasn't going to be a quick or easy change owing to how they laid it out--the tuner portion of the system wasn't even in the head unit but in the back under one of the "cubbyholes" behind the seats, and on being told the best thing to do was rip the whole system out and replace it, NOPE I just left it as it was.
The light above the door handle is also the map reading light. You push on the end of the lens to turn it on and off. The early 4+3 had the overdrive on/off switch mounted on the console trim plate, the later ones had the switch incorporated into the shift knob (press the shift pattern). The overdrive unit looked looked like a mini automatic transmission, less the torque converter. It had a clutch pack, valve body, and kickdown cable. Kinda fun to drive, you could be cruising down the road in 3rd gear overdrive on, and if you wanted to pass just press the gas down and it would turn the overdrive off with the kickdown.
I had an 84 for 7 years and loved it. It had the Z51 suspension which meant a rock hard ride but it would corner like it was glued to the road. The CFI gave me no problems after I put a new fuel pump in it and had a friend of mine sync the throttle bodies. It was the most reliable of all the "toys" I have had.
having owned a '96 I can tell you out of necessity it is possible for a person to ride back there, my friend's wife tolerated it for the ride home when both their cars broke down but she most definitely was not "chipper", nor is she Canadian! But I should mention despite there being no glovebox there is plenty of storage for your 9mm or other gun of choice up through at least a Ruger Blackhawk! And as I mentioned elsewhere, Bill would've found the AC in my '96 to be more than adequate for the miserable hot muggy weather we have down here in FL! :D
I remember the '84 being introduced. It looked very futuristic, especially the instrument panel. I was in the car business back then and was able to test drive an '84 C4. It had one of the harshest rides of any car I'd ever driven.

Showing my vintage some, but has anyone else played Vette! by Spectrum Holobyte? The thumbnail and Adam mentioning the guage cluster looking like a video game triggered the memory for me.
There is 1 1983 Corvette. You can see it in the National Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. I owned a 1993 with the red "plastic fantastic" interior. I actually restored this car and went with black carpet to keep the torch red from searing my retina. I enjoyed the look of this interior overall and the dash was especially interesting and fit the character of the car superbly. I'll never forget having to replace the heater core in it -not an easy job by any measure!! It is said that the C4 Corvette starts life as a heater core and the rest of the car is built around it!
I always liked the looks of the earlier dash better but having owned a '96 I would say that while visually all I could think was WTF were they thinking (I remember a review of the time calling it "gothic"!), it was very functional with a digital speedo and both analog and digital gauges for everything else and I eventually grew to love it. GEEZ that car was really a steaming pile of poo--not a month went by in the year and a half I owned it without it being at the dealer at least once, in the case of the water pump having had to have it replaced TWICE, but dammit after all these years I'm starting to miss it! :)
there definitely is 1 1983 corvette it was completely restored by gm and is available to be seen gm actually produced somewhere over 20 1983 corvettes it had the crossfire engine and gm decided to go a different direction and ordered the cars crushed its a very interesting story and worth the read
I was 13 when the C4 came out. Remember going to the big new car show in town and sitting in one dreaming it was mine and hoping someone would come along with keys to light up the dash. I agree with Adam, they dropped the ball on the revamped version. I actully like the 84-89 interior. One of the only "digital" dashes I do like. My uncle just picked up a mint' 95'....kinda wish it was an older one just for the instrument cluster & dash.
Adam, the 94-96 has the best interior of this generation. It is smoothed out and easier on the eyes. The exterior was also the best as they went out with a bang with the Grand Sport and Collector Edition.
Having owned a '96 Collector Edition, I agree! Just looking at pictures of earlier Corvettes from '90-'93 there are subtle but important changes and the instrument panel if not the prettiest was extremely functional and well thought out, everything was within easy reach. Heck it was easier to manage everything from ventilation to radio and other controls without taking your eyes off the road than most of today's cars including my current dreaded SUV I think! It still rattled and squeaked almost as much as my '72 Pinto though. :D
Love your channel. I listen to it very frequently. I can tell you that from experience, my mother had the 88 35th anniversary Corvette. It was the white one with the white interior and the white wheels. it was the biggest POC. Non-stop rattles, non-stop squeaks, frequently in the shop, the windshield was warbled and you couldn’t see straight through it. It drove like a lowered Oldsmobile with no road feel.
The C4 Corvette was also home to one of the best shifting 6 speed manual transmissions, the ZF S6-40. Probably not enough to say about it alone in one video, but would be a great inclusion on a "best transmissions" video. I have an 85 Corvette. Bought it as a cheap summer car to play around with until the C8 came out. Ended up falling in love with the car and cancelled my c8 order after being discouraged by all the delays that kept plaguing production. I swapped out the 700R4 for a ZF6 and now this 85 has easily become one of my favorite cars.
_I know personally that you're a collector of classic cars(many of which are considered behemoths by today's standards), yet your perspective on the earlier fourth gen Corvettes(namely the interior) was spot on save for a couple of misinformed points. The first being that the 1984's quickness (again, by today's Corvette standards) is yes considered not quick at all. (But in 1984, the Chevrolet Corvette was the quickest American car at the time). Sorry about the 'quick' quirt. (Also remember when the car was introduced it won every award on earth by the automotive world, inclusive to coolest 'video game' lighted crystal dashboard). And yes the DELCO-Bose premium gold series audio system added to this cache. (Again, for the time it was truly cutting edge). See a reference...the Delco-Bose connection 'Cor-vette Specs 1984-1996 by Antonick. (Remembering the audio system was specifically designed for the car). All this said Adam, your knowledge, and education on all things automotive is why I subscribe to a great channel._
You did a great job Adam. I have an 84 I bought back in 2018. I paid a bit much for it but it was in relatively good condition. Everything but the radio and tape player worked on it. Just a note it is true there was no sale year 1983 Corvette. However, a good number of the 84 Corvettes where built in 83. Mine is a late build 83. They of course were not sold until 1984. The dashes were pretty cool but problematic. When you think about it the technology that was put into these dashes was very early 80s. The one engineer I knew that worked with the engineering team for this dash said they started on the design in early 1980. I could share a lot about the Doug Nash overdrive units on these but it would make this post too long. I worked on these under warranty. Great job man.

I remember the first test drive of the 85 I bought, it was raining and it took me a good 5 minutes to find the wiper switch. Odd location for sure. One thing to add about the defrost, most cars that were equipped with rear defrost also had defrosting side mirrors. It doesnt say that on the mirror glass itself, but there is an rpo code for that option if a C4 owner wants to check if they have it or not. It works very well.
I had an 87 C4. There's a sensor on the dash which detects bright light and put the display on full brightness, so at night the displays are not as bright as in daytime, well i put an LED and connected it to the dash lights, so everytime i would turn on the lights at night it will turn on that LED and fool the sensor, thinking it's day time... so my display were SUPER bright at night. And i was so proud of it...😊😊
@bigmedge i solder a bulb with the connector of the dash lights, so when i would turn on the dash lights the would lit up and i taped it right on top of the dash sensor, so it will fool the sensor by thinking its day time. You can literally see the led speedometer brightness go high, it looks so so good at night, it took me about an hour, remember these were the days before internet, so did it completely on my own, but was fairly easy, you just have to take the dash display cover.
Plus ,it was a regular bulb that i bought fron RadioShack, I'm sorry that i said led,nowadays everything is led. It was just a small bulb with a long wire.
The exterior of the C4 is my favorite Corvette design, esp the late 80s/early 90s when it was slightly refreshed with a smoother design and more sporty wheels. It's sad how they don't get much attention from today's collectors vs many other 80s sports cars and muscle cars. This funky interior makes me think of KITT
I absolutely love my 1994 C4, Dark Forest green with light tan interior. Mine has the revised Gauges and Dash, that Adam doesn't like, however my car doesn't have ANY of the gray switches, buttons, or other acsent pieces like the car in the video, my car's all black plastic with white lettering and my steering wheel is solid black. I'm blown away how terrable that black and grey with yellow lettering looks especially with that bright red shiny interior. The way that new shaped dash and gauges looks in my car I think looks good. Any one else out there feel the same ?
I had forgotten about the 4 + 3 transmission, but I definitely remember the EPA-MPG force-you-to-shift system to increase the fuel economy rating... And hey, if you know how to do it, you have the brightest under hood lights in any car ever! 😋
Oh geez yup the later ones like my '96 had the 6 speed with the forced 1 to 4 upshift. You could get a kit to bypass it but why bother? The easier way to "bypass" it was to just put your foot into it and drive it like you WANTED to drive it and it'd let you shift from 1 to 2 all day long! :D :D :D But seriously, I did find if I drove it like I wanted to drive it I'd get about 18mpg in the city, which was still better than my 350Z's 17mpg! And if I drove it like it wanted me to drive it, I could push 21-22mpg in the city, and about 27MPG highway was about normal for me, I'd say that was pretty damned good for a 350CI / 5.7 litre V8 making a rated 330HP!
@@terrybeavan4264 Did you try recording the mileage using the forced shift? I'm rather disappointed with the city mileage in my '97 supercharged Riviera... Although to be fair, it actually meets those ancient EPA figures on the highway.
@@marko7843 Yes, it made a difference if I did the 1 to 4 upshift, there was a light on the dash signaling the 1 to 4 was activated depending on speed and how much throttle I was giving it, and best I ever managed in the usual daily drive to work was about 22mpg, as shown on the trip computer and verified with the fillups. If I drove it the way I wanted it would dip a bit below 20, usually getting me between 18 and 19 MPG which was still respectable considering! 6th gear was really a highway cruising gear, useless below about 50MPH, if you shifted below that and put your foot to the floor nothing much would happen! If I remember right, at 70MPH in 6th the engine was still running at only about 2000 RPM! But at reasonable but quick highway speeds I was still getting around 27MPG! One thing you can't complain much about the C4 Corvette was fuel economy, it wasn't much worse than my old '86 Corolla SR-5, which with a 73HP inline 4 in a car weighing several hundred pounds less it only beat those numbers by about 2MPG, and don't even get me started on my Nissan 350Z Roadster, 3.5 litre V6 making less HP than the Corvette but unfortunately in a car weighing around 400 pounds more(!) it inhaled fuel in comparison, with normal numbers around 17/25 no matter how I drove it!
I worked as a GM service Tech when the C4 came out. I Loved the Star Wars dash. I remember replacing a few under warranty and they were around $4,200- To this day I long for one-
GM gave these cars a huge upgrade with the LT-1 and one year only LT-4 later on. A girlfriend in the early ‘00s had a black ‘96 and it was a vast improvement over the late ‘80s C4s. I do agree that the exterior styling has always been tasteful.
This was a game changer when it came out. We forget the impact of 1g cornering in 1984 that the production competition just could not match. I bought my '88 Z-52 as a PEP car when I was at GM and the dash was one of the real features, so much better than what else was on the market at the time.
Great video Adam. I agree that the 1990 interior refresh could have been executed better. Possibly the best of the C4s were the ‘88-‘89 models. Like you’ve said so many times before, GM seemed to really turn the corner by 1988, and the Corvette exemplifies this idea. The ‘88 model saw several powertrain and chassis improvements (like the Z51 package 17” wheels) but still retained the original C4 interior.
Another hit video. I was enamored by the 84 as a kid, and now proudly own an 84, red/red right at 30k miles. I LOVE the high tech digital dash and think it was a major setback when criticism from the car magazines pressured automakers to mostly revert back to low tech boring analog gages, out of sync with the mood of the 80s. Completely agree that the late 80s dash revision doesn't mesh well with the exterior styling and as you mentioned doesn't seem to flow or be very organized
On the subject of C3 changes, I wouldn't skip 1973, when the chrome bumpers from 68 origins were replaced with plastic bumpers, I believe due to safety regs. That was a significant change in styling, in my opinion, for the worse. I think it also lengthened the car noticeably.
Being a young kid at the time they were made the plastic bumper C3's didn't bug me, I thought they didn't really get ugly until they got the big changes with the bubble rear glass, but I do agree the earlier metal bumper years were way better looking of the C3's! Isn't there one year with a plastic bumper front but metal bumper in the rear? I thought that didn't look half bad.

Still have my 84 4 speed that I paid 3 grand for about a decade ago. Fun to drive and I agree that the MIs-Fire Injection and buckboard ride take some getting used to.

@@joshuagibson2520 Fuel rail fire. GM put out a recall over it in the late 80s, specifically for the 1987 model year. Mine unfortunately had that issue.
Actually, there is one 1983 Corvette. It can be seen at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. Pretty much identical to the 1984 model, except it has 15" wheels instead of the 16" units of the '84 Corvette. As to the interiors, I prefer the redesigned 1990 and later interiors, but don't like the digital displays in either. Give me analog gauges, or nothing 😁
I think there was actually a few dozen made with '83 VINs, but they were all press cars and were confiscated and destroyed by GM; except that one at the museum of course. I believe the '84s went on sale in April 1983, and those all had 1984 VIN numbers.

Wow a dash from the 90's looks 90's..... fascinating observations. I like the 1990 dash it gives the C4 even more of a cockpit feel. I didn't like how they made it a little plainer and cheaper in the post 1994 cars with the 2 spoke wheel etc.
One other fact you didn't mention was Corvette assembly moving from St. Louis to Kentucky at the end of the '82 model year that also contributed to the delay of the introduction of the C-4.
Correction number 2. The parking brake could be engaged and then pushed down out of the way, WITHOUT releasing the brake. To release the brake, you pulled the lever back up and released it with the pushbutton. I had a new '92.
@RareClassicCars You said "release". It's really push. I'll back down on that one since your content is so amazing. I loved my '92, but lost interest in it when I bought a house. Bright aqua w/ white top and Arctic white leather. I sold it and put in an inground pool. Corvettes (until the C5s) are my wheelhouse. I really love all GM through the 80's.
Thank you Adam. I liked the digital instrumentation panel on the Corvette back then in the 80's. They eventually went analog for a while and no now it is digital with screens. The update in the 90's looked more Pontiac than Chevrolet Corvette. This car has had a long and interesting history. The car has indeed changed with the times. I know this car impacted or limited other GM brands over the years too. I know they were not happy about Buick Regal Grand National/GNX with a turbo 3.8 liter V6. They restricted Pontiac with the Firebird/Trans Am too. It is interesting how Camaro would come close to this car but not too close over the years.
Actually, there is a 1983 Corvette! It's displayed at the Corvette museum in Bowling Green, Ky. GM/Chevrolet actually made one 1983 Corvette, never intended for sale.
Interesting video it's crazy how the car companies decided to capitalize on the tech trends of the time. Bose also had an expression just highs and lows that's Bose. As in the home many of their most popular systems like the wave radio and the small cubes simply eliminated midrange frequencies. They do sound good but also filter out a very large % of the full sound which is why most audiophiles hate them. People can't understand how can it be bad if it sounds good. How that's possible is say audio frequencies are A-F, a goes to the tweeters, f to the subwoofer ok cool. Except b, c, d, e all get directed to no speakers.
Actually, only the 1982 C3s had an opening rear window. The 78-81 was fixed, though it did give more cargo space and gave a less cramped feel to the interior. The interior door handle is not the same as the 3rd gen F-Bodies actually, though it looks quite similar. Having had an 84 and 87 C4 and several 3rd gens, there's actually not much shared in between them outside of small parts like clips and generic electrical components.
The C4 Corvettes, as flawed as they are, are still my favorites from the EFI years. The C5 is better in pretty much every way, but the C4, especially the ZR-1, is what my heart aches for. A C5 would likely be a lot less trouble to keep on the road, the LS engines being pretty solid and easy to work on, but the C4 is from my childhood and I will always want one.
For 1985, option Z51 was revised due to complaints of an overly harsh ride quality found on a Z51 optioned '84 C4. To my knowledge, suspension of base C4s in '84 and '85 would have been identical.
I had a 89 Cavlier Z24 Convertible with and elecronic instrument cluster. It had and electronic tach and I think speedometer. Similar to Corvette. I like the C4 Corvette but they don't get much praise. My cousin had a convertible and it was sweet. It was black with a grey interior. The hood is cool how it opens up to expose even front wheels. The Corvette seats would wear bad on side bolsters. I would like to own a red with red interior one someday. Bose was top line sound then. I had a Dodge Challenger later that had Harmen Carden sound. My dad had a 91 Firebird with T tops and it had the bag they went in and it had straps that clipped into rear compartment. The C4s are inexpensive. I'd really like to have a 2019 Corvette. I don't like the styling on mew mid engine ones.
Back in 1986 one of the salesmen where I worked got him a brand new black Corvette I think it had like a 180 miles on it and he took me for a ride over the rough streets of Houston and that thing was the buzzingist, rattlingist, crappiest most miserable car I'd ever been in in my life. lol It was beautiful though and it did MOVE !!!
Certainly a lot of cross channel viewership going on, but the burning quesiton - what does Adam think about Bill :) When I went shopping for one of these I specifically wanted 90 an up for the dash - I loved the retro nod to the C2 - but it disappointed in person; yeah, too many pieces.

I remember riding in these C4 as a kid.. Even in fairly new ones, the cowl shake and plastic squeaks were unbearable.. But, it didn't matter. It was a Corvette! Sweet memories..

Well, I can't give you anything on that but can tell you the weather down here in FL is for once pleasantly crisp and DRY(!) and we have a good month or two left before the miserable heat and humidity returns--but then I'm on the east coast so I can't speak for what Bill's dealing with, hoping he's as "chipper"" as those proverbial Canadians over there! :D
Personally I love the C4. It's my favorite generation in the car's history. For some reason there is this faction of the Corvette community that just hates the C4 with a powerful passion and they can't exactly explain why. It seems as if that in this group it's just required to hate the C4 like how you were supposed to hate certain people in high school but nobody could say why.
Just so everyone knows, there is 1 1983 corvette and it is in the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green Kentucky, I visited 2/3 years ago, and it is an amazing place to visit. I went during covid, and the plant was closed to visitors, but I am going back as soon a time allows. The Corvette Muesum is a great bucket list trip and I assure, you will not be disappointed!!!!!
To me, this is the second best looking Corvette ever, after the '68-'78 versions.

Many years ago I bought a used '87, then as time went on I went through a couple of used early 90's models. After having my introduction to Corvette via the '87, I never really liked or could get used to the 90's dash. I know most people don't like the digital dash, but I loved it the whole time I had the car, and missed it when I got the newer, better versions. 🙁🙁 I'd love to drive one of these again, just for the nostalgia!

If you’re going to buy an 84-89 Corvette make sure all of the electronics, especially the instrument cluster are working, 20 years ago when my family had a Corvette-only shop, the clusters in those years were a nightmare to repair. At that time it cost 500 dollars on average to buy a rebuilt unit, so when you’re looking to purchase one make a list of everything you see that’s broken on the car, check all the plastic and the electronics before you make an offer on the car. The door panels have a tendency for the mounting studs to break off and once again 20 years ago they were 50 dollars each and they were always broken. Oh yea the headlights will need the main drive gear replaced if they’re stuck in the up or down position. I’ll leave you with one last thing, all glass tops will get stress cracking covering the whole top, it won’t hurt anything and you mainly see it from the inside. So it’s only cosmetic and if you buy another glass top it will do the same.
In 87 or 88 they redid the suspension and it's known for being a substantial improvement but they didn't redo the dash until 90 so those late-80s are really the best of both worlds: improved suspension with the original dash.
At the time the Bose was radically impressive. It did feel like you were listening to one of the best systems in the world. It would go amazingly loud and hold the tone etc. I spent lots of time in a new 84 back in the day
I owned a '96 and I'd say the sound was more than decent for a factory car system, though I'd describe the bass as a bit of "one note bass" plenty of it but not tight and detailed, not surprising as it had the Bose tuned waveguide setup in the back as opposed to a "real" subwoofer in order to save space, otherwise it was surprisingly good, very balanced sound with the bass and treble controls set centered most of the time. Only real issue I had was the CD player was a little finicky, it would refuse to play some discs that other players had no trouble with. I looked into changing out the head unit and found that it wasn't going to be a quick or easy change owing to how they laid it out--the tuner portion of the system wasn't even in the head unit but in the back under one of the "cubbyholes" behind the seats, and on being told the best thing to do was rip the whole system out and replace it, NOPE I just left it as it was.
The light above the door handle is also the map reading light. You push on the end of the lens to turn it on and off. The early 4+3 had the overdrive on/off switch mounted on the console trim plate, the later ones had the switch incorporated into the shift knob (press the shift pattern). The overdrive unit looked looked like a mini automatic transmission, less the torque converter. It had a clutch pack, valve body, and kickdown cable. Kinda fun to drive, you could be cruising down the road in 3rd gear overdrive on, and if you wanted to pass just press the gas down and it would turn the overdrive off with the kickdown.
I had an 84 for 7 years and loved it. It had the Z51 suspension which meant a rock hard ride but it would corner like it was glued to the road. The CFI gave me no problems after I put a new fuel pump in it and had a friend of mine sync the throttle bodies. It was the most reliable of all the "toys" I have had.

having owned a '96 I can tell you out of necessity it is possible for a person to ride back there, my friend's wife tolerated it for the ride home when both their cars broke down but she most definitely was not "chipper", nor is she Canadian! But I should mention despite there being no glovebox there is plenty of storage for your 9mm or other gun of choice up through at least a Ruger Blackhawk! And as I mentioned elsewhere, Bill would've found the AC in my '96 to be more than adequate for the miserable hot muggy weather we have down here in FL! :D
I remember the '84 being introduced. It looked very futuristic, especially the instrument panel. I was in the car business back then and was able to test drive an '84 C4. It had one of the harshest rides of any car I'd ever driven.

I owned a 1993 with the red "plastic fantastic" interior. I actually restored this car and went with black carpet to keep the torch red from searing my retina. I enjoyed the look of this interior overall and the dash was especially interesting and fit the character of the car superbly. I'll never forget having to replace the heater core in it -not an easy job by any measure!! It is said that the C4 Corvette starts life as a heater core and the rest of the car is built around it!
I always liked the looks of the earlier dash better but having owned a '96 I would say that while visually all I could think was WTF were they thinking (I remember a review of the time calling it "gothic"!), it was very functional with a digital speedo and both analog and digital gauges for everything else and I eventually grew to love it. GEEZ that car was really a steaming pile of poo--not a month went by in the year and a half I owned it without it being at the dealer at least once, in the case of the water pump having had to have it replaced TWICE, but dammit after all these years I'm starting to miss it! :)
there definitely is 1 1983 corvette it was completely restored by gm and is available to be seen gm actually produced somewhere over 20 1983 corvettes it had the crossfire engine and gm decided to go a different direction and ordered the cars crushed its a very interesting story and worth the read

I was 13 when the C4 came out. Remember going to the big new car show in town and sitting in one dreaming it was mine and hoping someone would come along with keys to light up the dash. I agree with Adam, they dropped the ball on the revamped version.
I actully like the 84-89 interior. One of the only "digital" dashes I do like. My uncle just picked up a mint' 95'....kinda wish it was an older one just for the instrument cluster & dash.
I bought an 86 Z51 with the 4+3 trans. The Doug Nash unit wasn’t add at all, never gave me any trouble. It was a very nice car.
Adam, the 94-96 has the best interior of this generation. It is smoothed out and easier on the eyes. The exterior was also the best as they went out with a bang with the Grand Sport and Collector Edition.
Having owned a '96 Collector Edition, I agree! Just looking at pictures of earlier Corvettes from '90-'93 there are subtle but important changes and the instrument panel if not the prettiest was extremely functional and well thought out, everything was within easy reach. Heck it was easier to manage everything from ventilation to radio and other controls without taking your eyes off the road than most of today's cars including my current dreaded SUV I think! It still rattled and squeaked almost as much as my '72 Pinto though. :D
I didn't like that interior as much, I liked the baggy leather seats in the 90-93.
Love your channel. I listen to it very frequently. I can tell you that from experience, my mother had the 88 35th anniversary Corvette. It was the white one with the white interior and the white wheels. it was the biggest POC. Non-stop rattles, non-stop squeaks, frequently in the shop, the windshield was warbled and you couldn’t see straight through it. It drove like a lowered Oldsmobile with no road feel.
The C4 Corvette was also home to one of the best shifting 6 speed manual transmissions, the ZF S6-40. Probably not enough to say about it alone in one video, but would be a great inclusion on a "best transmissions" video.
I have an 85 Corvette. Bought it as a cheap summer car to play around with until the C8 came out. Ended up falling in love with the car and cancelled my c8 order after being discouraged by all the delays that kept plaguing production.
I swapped out the 700R4 for a ZF6 and now this 85 has easily become one of my favorite cars.

_I know personally that you're a collector of classic cars(many of which are considered behemoths by today's standards), yet your perspective on the earlier fourth gen Corvettes(namely the interior) was spot on save for a couple of misinformed points. The first being that the 1984's quickness (again, by today's Corvette standards) is yes considered not quick at all. (But in 1984, the Chevrolet Corvette was the quickest American car at the time). Sorry about the 'quick' quirt. (Also remember when the car was introduced it won every award on earth by the automotive world, inclusive to coolest 'video game' lighted crystal dashboard). And yes the DELCO-Bose premium gold series audio system added to this cache. (Again, for the time it was truly cutting edge). See a reference...the Delco-Bose connection 'Cor-vette Specs 1984-1996 by Antonick. (Remembering the audio system was specifically designed for the car). All this said Adam, your knowledge, and education on all things automotive is why I subscribe to a great channel._

You did a great job Adam. I have an 84 I bought back in 2018. I paid a bit much for it but it was in relatively good condition. Everything but the radio and tape player worked on it. Just a note it is true there was no sale year 1983 Corvette. However, a good number of the 84 Corvettes where built in 83. Mine is a late build 83. They of course were not sold until 1984. The dashes were pretty cool but problematic. When you think about it the technology that was put into these dashes was very early 80s. The one engineer I knew that worked with the engineering team for this dash said they started on the design in early 1980. I could share a lot about the Doug Nash overdrive units on these but it would make this post too long. I worked on these under warranty. Great job man.

They were sold in 1983 as 1984 cars, the on sale date for the C4 was January 1983.

For the C3 a functioning hatch wouldn't arrive until 1982 as part of the Collector Edition Corvette.
I remember the first test drive of the 85 I bought, it was raining and it took me a good 5 minutes to find the wiper switch. Odd location for sure.
One thing to add about the defrost, most cars that were equipped with rear defrost also had defrosting side mirrors. It doesnt say that on the mirror glass itself, but there is an rpo code for that option if a C4 owner wants to check if they have it or not. It works very well.
I had an 87 C4. There's a sensor on the dash which detects bright light and put the display on full brightness, so at night the displays are not as bright as in daytime, well i put an LED and connected it to the dash lights, so everytime i would turn on the lights at night it will turn on that LED and fool the sensor, thinking it's day time... so my display were SUPER bright at night. And i was so proud of it...😊😊
Are you saying you connected the LED in series with the standard bulb, or you replaced the standard bulb with the LED bulb ?
@bigmedge i solder a bulb with the connector of the dash lights, so when i would turn on the dash lights the would lit up and i taped it right on top of the dash sensor, so it will fool the sensor by thinking its day time. You can literally see the led speedometer brightness go high, it looks so so good at night, it took me about an hour, remember these were the days before internet, so did it completely on my own, but was fairly easy, you just have to take the dash display cover.
Plus ,it was a regular bulb that i bought fron RadioShack, I'm sorry that i said led,nowadays everything is led. It was just a small bulb with a long wire.
The exterior of the C4 is my favorite Corvette design, esp the late 80s/early 90s when it was slightly refreshed with a smoother design and more sporty wheels. It's sad how they don't get much attention from today's collectors vs many other 80s sports cars and muscle cars.

I absolutely love my 1994 C4, Dark Forest green with light tan interior. Mine has the revised Gauges and Dash, that Adam doesn't like, however my car doesn't have ANY of the gray switches, buttons, or other acsent pieces like the car in the video, my car's all black plastic with white lettering and my steering wheel is solid black. I'm blown away how terrable that black and grey with yellow lettering looks especially with that bright red shiny interior. The way that new shaped dash and gauges looks in my car I think looks good. Any one else out there feel the same ?
I had forgotten about the 4 + 3 transmission, but I definitely remember the EPA-MPG force-you-to-shift system to increase the fuel economy rating... And hey, if you know how to do it, you have the brightest under hood lights in any car ever! 😋
Oh geez yup the later ones like my '96 had the 6 speed with the forced 1 to 4 upshift. You could get a kit to bypass it but why bother? The easier way to "bypass" it was to just put your foot into it and drive it like you WANTED to drive it and it'd let you shift from 1 to 2 all day long! :D :D :D But seriously, I did find if I drove it like I wanted to drive it I'd get about 18mpg in the city, which was still better than my 350Z's 17mpg! And if I drove it like it wanted me to drive it, I could push 21-22mpg in the city, and about 27MPG highway was about normal for me, I'd say that was pretty damned good for a 350CI / 5.7 litre V8 making a rated 330HP!
@@terrybeavan4264 Did you try recording the mileage using the forced shift? I'm rather disappointed with the city mileage in my '97 supercharged Riviera... Although to be fair, it actually meets those ancient EPA figures on the highway.
@@marko7843 Yes, it made a difference if I did the 1 to 4 upshift, there was a light on the dash signaling the 1 to 4 was activated depending on speed and how much throttle I was giving it, and best I ever managed in the usual daily drive to work was about 22mpg, as shown on the trip computer and verified with the fillups. If I drove it the way I wanted it would dip a bit below 20, usually getting me between 18 and 19 MPG which was still respectable considering! 6th gear was really a highway cruising gear, useless below about 50MPH, if you shifted below that and put your foot to the floor nothing much would happen! If I remember right, at 70MPH in 6th the engine was still running at only about 2000 RPM! But at reasonable but quick highway speeds I was still getting around 27MPG! One thing you can't complain much about the C4 Corvette was fuel economy, it wasn't much worse than my old '86 Corolla SR-5, which with a 73HP inline 4 in a car weighing several hundred pounds less it only beat those numbers by about 2MPG, and don't even get me started on my Nissan 350Z Roadster, 3.5 litre V6 making less HP than the Corvette but unfortunately in a car weighing around 400 pounds more(!) it inhaled fuel in comparison, with normal numbers around 17/25 no matter how I drove it!
I worked as a GM service Tech when the C4 came out. I Loved the Star Wars dash. I remember replacing a few under warranty and they were around $4,200- To this day I long for one-
GM gave these cars a huge upgrade with the LT-1 and one year only LT-4 later on. A girlfriend in the early ‘00s had a black ‘96 and it was a vast improvement over the late ‘80s C4s. I do agree that the exterior styling has always been tasteful.

This was a game changer when it came out. We forget the impact of 1g cornering in 1984 that the production competition just could not match. I bought my '88 Z-52 as a PEP car when I was at GM and the dash was one of the real features, so much better than what else was on the market at the time.
Few interiors scream '80s like this Vette. The exterior still looks good today.

Great video Adam. I agree that the 1990 interior refresh could have been executed better. Possibly the best of the C4s were the ‘88-‘89 models. Like you’ve said so many times before, GM seemed to really turn the corner by 1988, and the Corvette exemplifies this idea. The ‘88 model saw several powertrain and chassis improvements (like the Z51 package 17” wheels) but still retained the original C4 interior.
I’ve got a 90 ZR1, and I still regret that It didn’t get the full digital dash as they had in 1989.
They actually were quite functional and easy to read. Once you found all the ground faults and fixed them.
Another hit video. I was enamored by the 84 as a kid, and now proudly own an 84, red/red right at 30k miles. I LOVE the high tech digital dash and think it was a major setback when criticism from the car magazines pressured automakers to mostly revert back to low tech boring analog gages, out of sync with the mood of the 80s.
Completely agree that the late 80s dash revision doesn't mesh well with the exterior styling and as you mentioned doesn't seem to flow or be very organized

The backlight on the 78-82 didn't raise until the very end when the 82 Collectors Edition was given a rear window that would open.
On the subject of C3 changes, I wouldn't skip 1973, when the chrome bumpers from 68 origins were replaced with plastic bumpers, I believe due to safety regs. That was a significant change in styling, in my opinion, for the worse. I think it also lengthened the car noticeably.
Being a young kid at the time they were made the plastic bumper C3's didn't bug me, I thought they didn't really get ugly until they got the big changes with the bubble rear glass, but I do agree the earlier metal bumper years were way better looking of the C3's! Isn't there one year with a plastic bumper front but metal bumper in the rear? I thought that didn't look half bad.

The C3 Corvette 1968-1982, the frame and chassis used was from the C2 Corvette, the 1963-67 model. So the Chassis had a 1963 -82 run.

The 1978 back glass did not raise. The opening back glass did not appear until 1982 on the "Collector's Edition" only.

@@joshuagibson2520 Fuel rail fire. GM put out a recall over it in the late 80s, specifically for the 1987 model year. Mine unfortunately had that issue.

Actually, there is one 1983 Corvette. It can be seen at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green, KY. Pretty much identical to the 1984 model, except it has 15" wheels instead of the 16" units of the '84 Corvette. As to the interiors, I prefer the redesigned 1990 and later interiors, but don't like the digital displays in either. Give me analog gauges, or nothing 😁
I think there was actually a few dozen made with '83 VINs, but they were all press cars and were confiscated and destroyed by GM; except that one at the museum of course. I believe the '84s went on sale in April 1983, and those all had 1984 VIN numbers.

Wow a dash from the 90's looks 90's..... fascinating observations. I like the 1990 dash it gives the C4 even more of a cockpit feel. I didn't like how they made it a little plainer and cheaper in the post 1994 cars with the 2 spoke wheel etc.

One other fact you didn't mention was Corvette assembly moving from St. Louis to Kentucky at the end of the '82 model year that also contributed to the delay of the introduction of the C-4.

Correction number 2. The parking brake could be engaged and then pushed down out of the way, WITHOUT releasing the brake. To release the brake, you pulled the lever back up and released it with the pushbutton. I had a new '92.

Thank you Adam. I liked the digital instrumentation panel on the Corvette back then in the 80's. They eventually went analog for a while and no now it is digital with screens. The update in the 90's looked more Pontiac than Chevrolet Corvette. This car has had a long and interesting history. The car has indeed changed with the times. I know this car impacted or limited other GM brands over the years too. I know they were not happy about Buick Regal Grand National/GNX with a turbo 3.8 liter V6. They restricted Pontiac with the Firebird/Trans Am too. It is interesting how Camaro would come close to this car but not too close over the years.

Interesting video it's crazy how the car companies decided to capitalize on the tech trends of the time. Bose also had an expression just highs and lows that's Bose. As in the home many of their most popular systems like the wave radio and the small cubes simply eliminated midrange frequencies. They do sound good but also filter out a very large % of the full sound which is why most audiophiles hate them. People can't understand how can it be bad if it sounds good. How that's possible is say audio frequencies are A-F, a goes to the tweeters, f to the subwoofer ok cool. Except b, c, d, e all get directed to no speakers.

Funky? Don't you mean COOL!!! The 3rd Gen Camaro Berlinetta had a somewhat less flashy but broadly similar digital display as well.
In choosing a V-8 grand tourer, I elected to buy the 928 over the C4, seemed a more comfortable ride and does actually seat four.
Actually, only the 1982 C3s had an opening rear window. The 78-81 was fixed, though it did give more cargo space and gave a less cramped feel to the interior.
The interior door handle is not the same as the 3rd gen F-Bodies actually, though it looks quite similar.
Having had an 84 and 87 C4 and several 3rd gens, there's actually not much shared in between them outside of small parts like clips and generic electrical components.
And I believe only the Collectors Editions had the hatch.
The C4 Corvettes, as flawed as they are, are still my favorites from the EFI years. The C5 is better in pretty much every way, but the C4, especially the ZR-1, is what my heart aches for. A C5 would likely be a lot less trouble to keep on the road, the LS engines being pretty solid and easy to work on, but the C4 is from my childhood and I will always want one.
For 1985, option Z51 was revised due to complaints of an overly harsh ride quality found on a Z51 optioned '84 C4.
To my knowledge, suspension of base C4s in '84 and '85 would have been identical.
'84 was stiffer for the regular suspension too. An '85 Z51 is about as stiff as a regular '84.

I had a 89 Cavlier Z24 Convertible with and elecronic instrument cluster. It had and electronic tach and I think speedometer. Similar to Corvette. I like the C4 Corvette but they don't get much praise. My cousin had a convertible and it was sweet. It was black with a grey interior. The hood is cool how it opens up to expose even front wheels. The Corvette seats would wear bad on side bolsters. I would like to own a red with red interior one someday. Bose was top line sound then. I had a Dodge Challenger later that had Harmen Carden sound. My dad had a 91 Firebird with T tops and it had the bag they went in and it had straps that clipped into rear compartment. The C4s are inexpensive. I'd really like to have a 2019 Corvette. I don't like the styling on mew mid engine ones.

Hmm, pretty sure I saw a 1983 Corvette at the Corvette Museum in Bowling Green
Back in 1986 one of the salesmen where I worked got him a brand new black Corvette I think it had like a 180 miles on it and he took me for a ride over the rough streets of Houston and that thing was the buzzingist, rattlingist, crappiest most miserable car I'd ever been in in my life. lol
It was beautiful though and it did MOVE !!!

Certainly a lot of cross channel viewership going on, but the burning quesiton - what does Adam think about Bill :) When I went shopping for one of these I specifically wanted 90 an up for the dash - I loved the retro nod to the C2 - but it disappointed in person; yeah, too many pieces.
Exterior styling reminds me of the FirebirdT/A of the same era. Or is it the other way around?
