I have both a C4 (95) and a C5 (03). And I have to say I really enjoy the C4 driving experience. It really is a car all of its own. Nothing I’ve driven is comparable to the feeling of driving that car! Thanks for doing your part to keep this hobby alive!
Totally agree! I have a 92 and a 2004 and I would say the same. I don't ever want to sell either of them. Especially 90s C4s are awesome. I really prefer the seats and interior over the C5.
The mechanical repairs were easy, as you said. The frustrations almost always resulted from the electronics, which were obviously developed by someone familiar with British cars in the 60's and 70's...... :) :) Lyle
Me n my girl drove our 95 coupe to the lake.upon returning ran rough then not at all.stuck on the side of the road I quickly diagnosed the fuel pump.no noise on turning the key and no pressure at rail. 50 dollars later and a half hour labor later back in business and did it where she stopped by the lake! Easiest fuel pump ever lol
You'll have some real fun swapping out your heater core when it blows - 5 days from start to finish completely for mine in my garage with only my wife to help wiggle - the spark plugs on the passenger side were fun -
I echo your comments about C4 driver comfort. My 92 C4 hugs me and supports my back and hips exceedingly well. I can ride a long time and not have back or hip pain, and for an old guy, that’s a big deal. I’m glad I have a C4. It feels good to hear someone say something nice about C4s.
@@justbop5518 interesting that you bring up back pain. After owning nearly 30 Corvette’s the one which surprised me was the C6. For me, in comfort, it was a step backwards. The C6 is the only Corvette I’ve ever driven which hurt my lower back on a long drive.
I had a 1984 that had 27000 miles on it when I got it. It had 206000 thousand on it when I gave it to my son . He put on another 60000 thousand. Never had a problem with the crossfire injection, motor never used oil and never touched the transmission either. Drove year round except when we got more 3 inches of snow live in the Midwest Great car. I’ve had a 1990 zr1 for 23 years another great one.
The 84 was a funny car that way: I have seen '84s that never set a foot wrong and felt like they had 300hp, and I've seen others that were nothing but trouble from the day they were born----but very few in-between! You obviously had one of the former! Lyle :)
My C4 story started about five months ago. Base coup in Polo Green with 54k on the odometer. It’s been a blast the car gets a lot of respect on the road. Your videos are great please keep the info coming.
@@keepamerica2astrong280I purchased a c4 a few months back. 1993 polo green auto, transmission was gone and paint on bumpers are bad, I paid 2k for it. I swapped the transmission for a 1996 4l60e. I installed a micro controller from eBay to shift and get overdrive. I also installed a transgo vac-46 mod for transmission pressure control. It has a few other electronic issues but I can't complain. The car has been a blast.
My first Corvette was a 1984 C4 with the 4+3 transmission, Crossfire Injection, etc., etc. It started my love for Corvettes and was an absolute blast to drive! Since then, I've had a C6 (still have), a C7, and now a C8. That C4 will always be my 1st, and it helped define that period in my life; I loved that car. You never forget your 1st!
A month ago I bought my 1st Corvette....a 90, 6 speed, convertible....from the original owner! I paid $8k and just did $6k in repairs. Rear main oil seal, clutch, differential seals, gas shocks, and a few other things. So, $14k in an awesome C4. I bought it and LOVE it for all the reasons you so eloquently elaborated on. My favorite part is the DRIVING! Ripping away thru the gears from a stop or faster thru curves than I could go on a 1000 cc motorcycle. Love the drive! Love the drive!!
Yeah 😂 they're nice cars but it's very very handy for the owner to be mechanically inclined 😂 my 1985's transmission died and I found a Corvette dismantler on eBay who lives 200 miles south of my location so I cruised down and grabbed a fully functional '89 automatic for $150!! Came home slammed it in by myself 😂 lucky for me he doesn't like to sell transmissions on eBay due to the shipping cost and hassles
When I got my C4 I had no idea how badly in disrepair it was. 8k later, with still some minor issues, it's running like raped ape. I think that some people that purchase a Corvette, have no idea what kind of maintenance and care is involved. It's a delicate machine.
I agree with you on the C4 Corvette, most people who say the don't care for them never drove one. I had two C4's and they were fun cars, I have a C8 now but still like the C4.
So true, with my 90 I hear the same things, but the folks never own one let alone drove one. It's not for everybody when it comes to entry and exit. But once in the seat, it's a blast. Not a tire smoker, but a very enjoyable road car. But you already have that figured out. I wish I could get over the mark-ups on the C8's. What an amazing car. Hope you get miles of smiles with your C8. CHEERS
I fell in love with the C4 way back in 1995 when I visited the Corvette Museum and they had a new one you could sit in and try on for size. My first C4 was a1985 and it was a good car but my current C4 is a 1991 convertible. Quasar Blue with a tan top and tan interior with the ZF six speed trans. Every time I take it out almost invariably someone asks me about it and several times people take pictures of it. Yes it's fun to drive, a lot more then C3's are when going thru the corners.
My 1994 C4 convertible and I have been together for 27 years. I have spent more money on oil changes then anything else. Insurance with Allstate was so inexpensive that I had a $100 deductible for the first 10 years.
Excellent review, Lyle! I recently bought a pristine, '91 ZR-1 with 38,000 miles on the odo. Everything, including the original (now 32 year old) Bilstein FX-3 ride control shocks still work on the car. The previous owner put the Borla exhaust system on it, but I didn't think it sounded right for the LT-5. I removed that system (still have it), and straight-piped the exhaust. No resonator or mufflers, no H or X pipe, just true dual exhaust. It sounds absolutely amazing now, especially above 5,000 rpm. I was originally shopping around for a 2010-2013 Grand Sport, but all the really nice ones are still running 40K on up. Then I ran across this ZR1. Beautiful red, black interior, impeccable condition. Then it sparked that "dream car" passion again. Now I've always loved C4s, but the ZR1 is not only historical, it's the game changer in all of Corvette history. With that said, the #1 reason I bought it is because it's one of the most iconic, timeless, classic performance cars of all time. Whether I rip it through the gears or cruise around in it, it sort of takes people back in time to better days compared to the world we live in now. I know the C5, C6, C7, and C8 are much better cars in just about every way, but none of them have the uniqueness or character of C4s or C4 ZR-1. The C4 saved Corvette from certain death for sure.
I maintained/restored and drove my 1988 C4 all over America for 18 years, from Jan. 5, 2005 until Nov. 2, 2023. I've driven from Louisiana to the Smokey Mountains in N. Carolina and to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado into Wyoming, Idaho, Montana, Washington, Oregon and down the West Coast. I drove it down Route 66 to the Grand Canyon through Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and Oklahoma and back to Louisiana. When I traded it in on a low mileage C6 last month she had over 145K miles on the clock. RPM Garage in Dallas looked her over and gave me a $10K credit trade-in value for it. That was the best running and handling car I've ever owned. I'll always remember the fun times driving it. Most-especially through the old mountain blacktop country roads of America. Thanks for giving me an outlet to brag on my faithful old C4 Corvette. If I had the space, I'd have kept that Corvette. But having two of them is about all I have the space for in keeping them out of the weather. My other one is a resto/modified 78 C3. Thanks again and keep up the good work here on the channel.
That story makes me confident in my C4. I’m about to drop 5 grand into my 92. Hoping to drive all spring/summer. I can’t imagine driving distance like you have done.
I have a 1989 corvette convertible 6-sp. with the factory hardtop. I love the car and have owned it for many, many years with very few minor issues. It has always been garaged, maintained and looks new inside and out. It receives compliments all the time and I have no intention of selling or upgrading. Thanks for finally showing some love for the c-4.
Have a C3 C4(93) Conv and C6 GS. The C4 is a blast to drive. It’s my go kart on steroids. A bit stiff and “unrefined” driving experience. Rough N Ready and Fun
Thanks Lyle. As a long time owner of the 87 c4, you nailed it. Getting into the c4 is a little more difficult but it’s like putting on my favorite leather gloves.
great assessment! I follow quite a few other C4 Instagram accounts from guys like me in their 30s who are IN LOVE with these cars and I think its because now we can afford THE car that was our "dream car" as kids ... for many of us it's the car that made us fall in love with cars. I've put my '93 LT1 in several shows this year and I've walked away with a Trophy 5 times. These cars are LOVED by so many.
Lyle I love ❤️ my 94 C4 I’am the third owner & I bring it to car shows beautiful black black convertible top & interior is perfect condition looks brand new my plate says Mlkmony as I retired from the milk 🥛 industry I’ve got a milk can I put out in front & it is beautifuly painted Mlkmoney! My top is original & in wonderful shape like new I have seventeens on the front & eighteens on the back!! I get many comments how nice it looks!!! I had a 79 red t tops & sold it!!! I miss that baby! Thanks for sharing your videos! Rick from Muscle Shoals Alabama!
Lyle, thank you for this video. I have a ‘89 C4 w/48k miles on it and my appreciation of the C4 grows stronger over time. The C4 may not be the best styling( comments overheard by non-C4 folks) but it’s a blast to own and has been very reliable for me. it’s the first of the modern corvette.
Lyle, I always enjoyed your C4 videos. In fact it was your videos about the C4 that helped me when I was shopping. When I realized how good the C4 is. I went and drove them. Notice I said "them". I drove a ZR1, 95, and 96. All of them had the 6 speed manual. When you drive a C4 and that cockpit wraps around you. It is a special experience. I ultimately got a C5 because it was the Corvette I always wanted. But when I get a larger garage. There'll be space in it for a RED C4.
I know it takes a brave soul to go looking for a C4, but dammit, I still love them. They were SO advanced and are to my eyes, still SO beautiful. Owning a Corvette here in the Caribbean will take some cajones, but I'm willing. Looking forward to being a Convertible C4 owner one day. Cheers.
Thank you for some love for C4. It was the poster on my wall back on the day. Red poster, red convertible vette. 1988 waa the year. I looked at that poster daily saying to myself" one day". I was 15 then. 35 years later i now have that same car. 1988 C4 red convertible, just like the poster. I sold the car and bought it back. It was a victim of Hurrricane Irma a few months ago. I will never sell it.again. She isint the best generation. It the bext of both worlds, have a reliable drivetrain, still with now a classic look. They made alot. They are cheap now. They will get there love one day. Im in Tampa. I just turned 50 in July. The only thing im missing is a pair of Sketchers and a Corvette jacket. Take care Lyle
@@csvetteTimes have changed since then. I worked for Toyira right out of high school. It was 1991. I drove a ton of the Supra then. They were kinda alike. The turbo supra then was awsome. Ill tell you what, they were no convertibles. The C4 was a lot cheaper to maintain. AMERICAN MADE. DROP THE TOP AND ENJOY THE FLORIDA SUN. I WILL TAKE MY C4 VERT AND ENJOY THE MILES OF SMILES.Take care Lyle. Thank you again for the kind words this time. 😂. Take care, stay safe. I do have a question. Who do you use to rebuild or replace the ABS pump behind the drivers seat of a 88 vert? Thank you again
Every time I watch one of your videos, talking about the C4, it makes me glad to actually have one. Thanks Lyle. Merry Christmas! Reiner in El paso Texas. We've talked before.
You nailed it brother. I bought an 84 in the fall of 2018. I paid a little too much for it but, when I looked it over the only thing that didn't work on it was the radio. I have had a lot of fun wrenching on it. Over all I have not had to do that much to it. My big task was fixing oil leaks and getting the steering gear rebuilt. That was expensive. Beyond that it has been just minor stuff. Mostly stuff that was screwed up by the previous owner. One of the other things about the C4 is, starting with the 85 model you started to see the return of horsepower and torque. The 84 was under whelming at 205 horsepower. Torque was still pretty good though at 290 lb ft. When the L98 came out that was as you said a vast improvement. I remember when they came out. I was an apprentice tech at a dealership. I worked on them. I worked on the engines and the Doug Nash overdrives. Just a cool story for you all. We have a sweet immigrant girl from Africa that we have "adopted". This summer when she come over for the 4th of July party we have every year she insisted to be taken home in my Vette. It was her first time ever in a car like that. When I got here home her words where, "that was awesome!" That to me is the reason to have a corvette. To share the experience with others. Her words, as soon as I can drive and afford one I am going to a get a corvette. A new corvette enthusiast has been born. Thanks Lyle for all you do for the corvette community.
I have 1990 corvette with headers and full exhaust, built trans with higher stall and shift kit, tune from Pcm of nc, and almost a full tune up. I’ve been working on this car 3 years ago when I bought it for only a couple grand. Needed some tlc, but it’s getting close to being finished. I buy my weatherstripping from you actually. Get the doors done this month. All that’ll be left is the rear hatch weatherstripping. After that I’ll replace the emblems and get the car detailed and I’ll have a car with solid power and handling, reliability, and looks that’ll kill. It’s almost there. Much love man. Love your videos.
My first Corvette was a 96 Collectors Edition, Coupe 6-spd. I LOVED THAT CAR! Fast, nimble, and tracked really well. Now I own a 2002 C5 base covertible 6-spd. Awesome car. Clearly different, more advanced than the C4 - but I miss the Collections edition. Great review Kyle - keep up the great work!
Good morning, It's hard to compare; I owned th 96 Collections Edition some 20 years ago. However, the LS4 was a beast, but the LS1 is so much more refined, minus the notorious electrical issues.@@wguthridge
Not apprised at all these cars are getting noticed. Manual trans, v8, tear drive cars are very fun to drive!! Great video Lyle. Thank you for putting it up!
I've owned an 89 for about 3 years now. I also really enjoy the weighting of the steering wheel. My only struggle right now is trying to figure out why the O2 sensor isn't working with ECM. That might keep me busy this winter...
I purchased my 89 that was my father-in-laws car after he passed away. I really didn't know much about them and the mechanic I brought it to had a similar opinion to you based on how hard they are to work on. I can totally understand. I have learned a lot watching your videos. Take care.. Rob@@csvette
Great video. I think it’s your best yet. I had a 96 Collector Edition and I loved that LT4. Now I have a 82 Collector Edition. I love the unique options on this car and plan to bring it back to ordinary factory specs. My next Vette will be a C4 Grand Sport or ZR1. Why? I just love that air craft like cockpit.
I was lucky enough to come across a C4 Grand Sport with the Z51 suspension and it has been such an incredible car to enjoy. The best of the breed, I think.
At 76 years old, I own a 95 coupe and a 2011GS coupe, both 6 speeds. To me the C4 is the Corvette that connects the "old" Vettes to the "new" style of Vette. My C4, to me is actually more fun to drive because of its rawness and lack of sophistication that my C6 has, getting in it seems purposeful and sets a certain mood for driving it. And when it comes right down to it it's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than a fast car slow! My C4 is great fun and my C6 is a great car. Thanks for a great video!
Well put. Some things take time to learn about what enjoyment that can be had without doing 3x the speed limit. At 72 I find myself enjoying my C4. With all the different performance cars I've owned this was a big step back. After fixing things Maintenace wise, to which I enjoy doing. It's a road car that is so unlike the 450 horse cars that I've had. Not that going fast isn't fun, it is still. But pushing it just a little and taking a curve or cornering cleanly without muss or fuss is as much fun as doing things that can get you thrown in the pokie on a straight away. CHEERS
Keep America 2A Strong I have a 96 coupe Z51 handling package 40k miles, mint, paid $12,500 Wifey has a 95 convertible with rare hard top option (only 8%) from the factory, 33k miles, mint, paid $13k Not to mention my all original, documented, mint 64 Stingray L76 motor, 365hp, close ratio Muncie 4 speed, silver blue. Love me some Vettes ! Great channel !
Hey Lyle, I’m a C4 guy and am actually one of your customers. I bought one of my C4s new, a 1994, and drove it daily until around 2010, when I got ill and stopped driving. The mice and rats ruined it, so when I started driving again, I bought another 1994 Vette. The only thing that keeps me from using it daily is the difficulty in getting repairs.
I have owned several corvettes in every generation including a C8. I currently own two C4's and enjoy driving them as much as anyone my other corvettes. I believe a lot of reviews are from people who have done there resurch on them but never as actual owned one. I own a 1984 base Corvette and they will! say they had a harsh ride. That might be true on the Z51 but not not the case if you have the base model. My 2016 with The Z51 package is more harsh than the 1984. My 1990 with the 6 speed and headers feels just as strong as my 2000 with the 6 speed transmission. My point is if you can find one in good condition, you drive it and you like it, make your own assessment, and if you like it buy it. You cannot go wrong. I enjoy driving my C4 Corvettes as much as any of the others including my C8 all for different reasons. Maybe because they are different is why they are great. But the one thing they all have in common is they are Corvettes.
I love my C4 and it's been well taken care of throughout it's life. I don't know how many owners it's had, but mechanically it is very sound for an 87 convertible. Lyle, I enjoy your videos, thank you for your insight on the C4's! Enjoy your weekend!
Thank you for this one Lyle!!! Every time I drive my 96 I love it more! I do not care what nay sayers have to say about C4'S Even working / cleaning or just walking by it in the garage it puts a smile on my face
Just picked up a convertible 89 and I am thoroughly head over heals. You’ve been very helpful on my journey to buy my c4 corvette, can’t thank you enough Lyle!
Lyle, I'm a lady C3 fan, just bought a '87 two yrs ago. Have mad respect for C4's now. Love the power, my 87 needs little work was gonna trade in for new vette in the future but you've given me more reasons to keep her. I agree they are the most affordable vette you can get. Thanks for the info.
I've had my 94 conv. for a few years now and went through the opti and water pump replacement last year. It has 83 thou. Miles now after I drove it to and from my home in NC to Detroit for the Woodward dream cruise back in Aug this year. What a great time putting this car on the Hwy for fun. It ran perfectly for a three week trip. Hat's off to C 4's
Got my '93 in Competition Yellow with 71,000 miles for $7,500. I think seller didn't realize what he had and just wanted it gone. Has C7 Z06 wheels and a John Greenwood body kit. Been watching videos and going over everything on the car for about 3 years in my spare time and I love it despite its minor kinks I've had to sort out.
Wow Lyle, Thanks for telling it like it is, with C4's. Also, Thanks for all your help with mine. Plus, Chris! Look forward to the ongoing adventures in the world of Corvettes.
I sold mine and wished I still had both. Funny how that works. Not that I don't enjoy my C4. In hunting for a good LT4 96. But pick up a 90 that just needed a little love. Just service work, but with any 30 plus year old car. It's not all that cheap. It came with a perfect paint and interior so now it runs as good as it looks. I missed out on a 96 LT4 that had been owned by a gentleman who was having trouble getting in and out of it. He had always kept the maintenance up and If I would have sold my mustang sooner! You know how that goes. A hint about finding a nice one. Is if there are any corvette car shows that you can attend. You just may find what you're looking for?
I adopted a '86 DN 4+3 from a Ford dealer Christmas '15 with 144k on the odometer. The car clicked over 200k miles two weekends ago. While she needed some love, its been an amazing experience.
Love the C4! I really enjoy my 2019 Stingray, which I plan on keeping, but there's still things that I miss about my '94 6 speed. If I can find a '96 LT-4 , in good shape, for a "reasonable" price, I'm all in. I'm not having much luck finding one, currently. The search continues!!
The LT4's are going up and up---"reasonable" may not be in the cards for the foreseeable future...At least if you get one, you can be confident that it won't lose value unless the world economy collapses or we have a global cataclysm....oh, wait....never mind.... :D :D Lyle
Gidday Lyle. Those are my exact thoughts & reason why I purchased a 1996 LT4 in Australia, that was well maintained ....as when it came to "Value for money" when comparing the C4 to other muscle cars in my country, it was the outright winner by the length of the straight. Just like it's race performances on the track that were so dominating which you've outlined in this & many other Vids. And I really mean that being a car-guy. You can't beat it for value. And I'm so glad I brought this car. It's easy to work on, especially if you have a "Garage-Hoist". If you want to know anything about them just google it. And with my model of the C4, the fuel consumption is absolute fantastic. On the highway I've had it down to as low as 8 .1 litres to the 100ks, which is pretty compatible with my V6. By the way Lyle. Thanks for doing all your DVD's as they've really "Schooled" me up when I got "Fair Dinkum" (that's KEEN in Aussie slang) & started looking for one of these babies 12 months. They are simply pure class & very cool. Cheers ;-)
Couldn't agree more with your comment that the 96 LT4 is a great value for the money which is why I own a white one. I've had it for 23 years and still love the car. One thing I noticed though is that it will pass nearly anything on the road especially going around the roundabouts near where I live however, I cannot seem to go past a gas station. I live just north of Lakewood Ranch so you guys are my go to for service. Always a great experience.
Last summer I shipped a 94 auto to my home with 80k for $10k. I get compliments every week I drive it. From coworkers to strangers. I also own a 10r80 5.0 and G37X. The C4 is a driver's car imo it handles better than my lowered 🐎 on 275 summer tires. I'm 36 and it's my dream car.
Hi Lyle, this is your first video that has been on my feed. I watched it because I presently own a low mileage 94 Corvette Coupe. It’s white and torch red. My first Corvette was s 63 convertible with a 327/340 in 1969. Since then I’ve owned approximately 30 Corvette’s. The oldest having been a 54 which by the way, was s blast to drive. My current C4 is factory stock. The only thing that I’m not fond of is exiting the car but hey, I’m 73 years old and find it only a minor inconvenience. The Corvette value proposition has always been its strong suit against actual competitors. We found it expensive in America because every other American car was so inexpensive. But I still maintain that throughout its history Corvette remains Americas only true sports car. As you can imagine, I could go on forever. Suffice to say that you’ve done a great job on this video, Focusing on the bang for the buck was the right approach. Also my opinion is that the interior of the C5 and all GM cars from that era is just plain hideous and has not aged well. C4- First American car to pull over 1G on the skid pad. And a remarkable drag coefficient as well. My car is beautiful with a brand new set of Continentals. I own it for $16000. What a deal!😎
Lyle, first of all I never felt you didn't give the C4 corvette it's propers. You always respected it as a great creation. I love my LT1 1996. I feel like a super hero putting on his gear when I drive that car. Long live the corvette and experts like yourself who make these older cars still appreciated and relevent in a more modern car world. Thank you.
So pleased that you took a second look; I have owned my '95 C4, Z07 for 12 years and it just turned 40K miles - fortunate to have found one with a clean CarFax and the beatiful Dark Purple Metallic color. Been to Memphis from central PA 2 times and learned that it is a terrific car for a long road-trip, has more than adequate space for 2 peoples luggage, and even though it is an auto-trans, gets amazing fuel economy.. Very little spent in maintenance. So glad to have this truly great car in my garage.
C4 corvette is one of my most favorite cars out of all corvettes the only thing that holds it back is the issues it has like the opti spark and old plastic parts like the head light gears and interior
Thankfully, all of those items are replaceable and (99%) are available. The other cars it was pitted against in tests during the late 80's/early 90's are almost impossible to maintain due to age and lack of aftermarket support. :) Lyle
I think the 80s/90s styling and lines of the C4 are really coming into their own. My ‘87 seems to be getting more and more attention at the cruise nights.
Thanks for the honest objective truth! I’ve got a really nice driving 94 6 speed. I get weary from all the hate and those who say the C5 was the first generation to put Corvette on the world stage. I love mine! And thankfully don’t have a lot of the troubles so far. Selective ride even still works fine. I wouldn’t mind a video about maintaining this system. I’m not one of those that wants to throw it out. Thank you for your excellent content!
I'm 52 and in 1986 I saw 1983 C4 red with 4+3 manual first time in flesh. It was grey import because there was no offical Chevrolet importer in Finland. It was and still is to me one of the most beautiful cars ever.
@@csvetteLyle, I opted for a local car (Tarpon Springs, FL) automatic coupe. Only 19,xxx original miles. The owners gave me a replacement targa top roof liner and a car cover. Had it checked out…all it needed was an AC charge and the CD player repaired. Beautiful car, and I love it!
In 2018 I was looking for a fun car and had always liked the C4 platform especially the body and interior changes in the 91 and up. After a search came across a 91 with 108,000 miles but excellent running L98 for only $6,000. As you said the low end torque in the L98 made it feel much faster. Drove that for 3 years and happened upon a one owner 95 in Bright Aqua Metallic and I had to buy it. Only repairs I've had to make so far is TPS and Oxygen sensor. While getting in and out of C4 is not graceful the driver experience is unbelievable. It sticks to the curves like your on tracks. The C4 is like the ugly step child of Corvettes, but those that feel that way are missing out on the experience.
Great perspective Lyle. As a C5 owner who still thinks about buying a C4 because that was the Corvette generation when I was growing up, I appreciated your unique perspective here.
I appreciate your take and info on the C4 which I’m a proud owner of my first Corvette a 92. I’ve always wanted one and love its handling capabilities.
Nice job, Lyle, as always. I bought my first (and only) Corvette in July '22, a silver '96 Collector's Edition, and I thought your description of the car was spot-on. It's a great car; it's not perfect, but boy, it just does so many things well. Thanks for confirming my opinion, and thanks for your channel.
I just purchased a 1994 red base model coupe for $10500 with the 6-speed manual transmission. The paint is pristine. A previous owner removed the cats and installed an SLP cold air intake and aluminum headers. What a sweet sound! So exhilarating to take on the road. Like you said, the handling is phenomenal!
Great look at the C4. I have a '95 Indy Pace Car with 25,000 miles on it and I love to drive it. It's a great road car that you can ride all day a never get tired of driving it. You will know it when you run over railroad tracks!! I find the marrying of the engine and automatic transmission nearly perfect - certainly better than anything else in its day.
I bought an 87 Z52 C4 new in May of that year. I still have her. Never once in 235,000 miles has, she left me stranded. Today, I chose to restore her. Now, I take her to car shows and enjoy her at car and coffee events. Still have some interior work to do and brake upgrades since the new Blueprint engine exceeds the original brake capabilities. C4 Rocks!
One thing you forgot to mention about the C4, is that as long as the roads are plowed, you will not slip, slide or get stuck in the snow, if you drive it with a head on your shoulders. We live in Chicago and for my birthday my wife bought me a brand new 94 black rose 6 speed Corvette coupe. We drove it year-round in all four seasons yet we never got stuck in the snow, the rain, the mud or the gravel. Granted we did not take that car off road nor did we drive that car in a snow storm with 6 to 10 inches of snow. But we did drive it while it was snowing outside. We did drive it when the roads were icy and we drove through snow up to 6 inches deep. What was nice was the traction control along with the antilock brakes with the knowledge from the dealership to drive that car respectfully and that car will always get you home and it sure did we never had a problem with it. Started up right away even in the subzero weather, Air conditioner always worked in 100+ degree weather and with the staggered tires it handled like a roller coaster. One of the best cars we ever owned. Plus if you drove it nicely at 65 mph with the air conditioning on at 65 mph in sixth gear, we were getting 30 miles to the gallon!! Lastly, are these 94 LT1 or the 94ZR1, can you bolt on a Tunnel Ram, a blower, a single or a double turbo to it ?? Thank you and to anyone else who can help me out with this project…….😎
I bought a 94 c4 Lt 1 for 11k 90kmiles. I bought it when my mom passed away 5 months ago. My dad bought her a 81 red on red with the glass t-tops when I was 12 years old and my dad and I wrecked and totaled the car out and my mom was so.. let's just say😢. She always said she would get another one. She never did have a chance to. So I bought a red convertible 94 and I have been driving it as a daily driver. I drive it like it's still 1994 and that baby doesn't disappoint! Very underrated in my opinion. Thank you for the video. I'm a new subscriber!
Thank you!! I'm sorry that your Mom didn't get the chance to enjoy the Corvette experience much, but good on you for doing it in her honor! Enjoy!! Lyle
A C4 convertible owner here. I've had mine for 28 fun filled years and it still looks amazing and turns plenty of heads. In my humble opinion, the best looking body style of them all... except maybe the new mid engine.😊😍
I am an owner of a 96 C4, Collectors Edition I bought cause it fit my budget at that time, I have been more than satisfied Surprisingly amount of torque and power, I'm also surprised whenever I fuel up, so many young guys tell me how much they luv the beauty of the car I get so many questions at stoplights and diners all over the country about the car It's been very reliable and dependable, I've driven from Miami up to Pennsylvania, out to Montana and Arizona, all with no probs or issues Lotsa luv out there for the C4, hopefully many more miles and adventures ahead...
When the C4 came out as an 84 model it was my dream car at the time I had an 82 3rd gen Z28. To this day I still love this car and eventually I’ll get around to purchasing one as a fun weekend car.
Some great points about the C4. Originally I wanted to try and get into a C5 because of the price for baseline performance. But i was weary of having to deal with the transaxle with no lift readily available. Then my buddy sent me an ad a 93 C4 6speed for under 8k. Loved the interior as soon as i got in and the previous owner kept a detailed list of the maintenance theyd done throughout the years. So, i thought why not if i hate it i can sell it for what i got into it at a minimum. A little over a year later with header and coilovers im able to compete and beat C5 and C6s locally as well as my FTD in autox without stripping the car and still having AC to keep me cool. I'm convinced the C4 is an underrated platform and as you stated will go up in price particularly from track day enthusiast wanting an affordable competitive option they can still use for date night. See you guys in January!
0:00 I have bought a C4 1984 (84000 mi) Corvette and still in the fixing stages. It was good to hear your comments, as some of that information I found by researching, which is why I made the decision to buy this vehicle. I soon hope to have it finished to enjoy the driving pleasures so many already enjoy.
I adore my 96 lt4 droptop, I spent my first 5 years of driving fixing an old 86 coupe pos. Eventually I got rid of it and rewarded my patience with the 96. Couldn’t be happier.
Thanks for this video Lyle. I have a 1989 rag top and have done some mods to it. I have to say that this car is a blast to drive. I do get to take it up to the mountains and that`s where it shines. Running the mountain roads is so much fun. As far as working on it, as long as you have some skills with tools it`s not bad. Wish I stilled lived in Sarasota I would have loved to stop by and say hi. Keep the videos coming love to watch them.
The clam shell hood is special, no other corvette series had it.
Backflip headlights...
I have both a C4 (95) and a C5 (03). And I have to say I really enjoy the C4 driving experience. It really is a car all of its own. Nothing I’ve driven is comparable to the feeling of driving that car! Thanks for doing your part to keep this hobby alive!
Agreed. That LT1 is a great engine. And that interior's experience is like none other.
Had two 96 C4s a black 96 Lt4 car and a 96 Grand Sport #901 loved them both!
I have a red metallic 95 and I love it
Totally agree! I have a 92 and a 2004 and I would say the same. I don't ever want to sell either of them. Especially 90s C4s are awesome. I really prefer the seats and interior over the C5.
No
I was pleasantly surprised at how easy the C4 was to work on, just look at how easy to replace a fuel pump. That 96 special edition was the best!
The mechanical repairs were easy, as you said. The frustrations almost always resulted from the electronics, which were obviously developed by someone familiar with British cars in the 60's and 70's...... :) :) Lyle
@@csvette Lol
Me n my girl drove our 95 coupe to the lake.upon returning ran rough then not at all.stuck on the side of the road I quickly diagnosed the fuel pump.no noise on turning the key and no pressure at rail. 50 dollars later and a half hour labor later back in business and did it where she stopped by the lake! Easiest fuel pump ever lol
You'll have some real fun swapping out your heater core when it blows - 5 days from start to finish completely for mine in my garage with only my wife to help wiggle - the spark plugs on the passenger side were fun -
@@Frankivity326 I did the spark plugs already praying I don't have to do the heater core I've seen some videos crazy!!
I have a C4 myself however folks keep giving me the run around with repairs. I have to reset the computer module.
Lyle :)
I have a 93 Corvette. 25 thousand miles. And I LOVE this car.👍
Just got my 93 yesterday...White 6 Speed with 73,000 k....love it...
Real honest description of what the C4 was and still is today!
My C4 story started about five months ago. Base coup in Polo Green with 54k on the odometer. It’s been a blast the car gets a lot of respect on the road. Your videos are great please keep the info coming.
Thank you!! Lyle
Hey Stephen, how much did you pay ?
@@keepamerica2astrong280I purchased a c4 a few months back. 1993 polo green auto, transmission was gone and paint on bumpers are bad, I paid 2k for it. I swapped the transmission for a 1996 4l60e. I installed a micro controller from eBay to shift and get overdrive. I also installed a transgo vac-46 mod for transmission pressure control. It has a few other electronic issues but I can't complain. The car has been a blast.
@@boostedbiker3878 Nice, bringing life back to a great car...Kudos...
The C4 Corvette is an under-appreciated rising star.
I love the C4….the styling is gorgeous.
Lyle, you help me to even love my c4 even more with vids like this. Thank you 😊
Glad to hear it! Keep on driving! Lyle :)
Thanks for the C4 love!!!
Glad to hear you talk about how good the C4 actually is. I've had my 86 for almost 20 years and it has always been my favorite car.
I agree with you on the C4 Corvette, most people who say the don't care for them never drove one. I had two C4's and they were fun cars, I have a C8 now but still like the C4.
Right? What else can you have that much fun with on 4 wheels for less money than a used Harley Davidson?? Lyle :)
CHEERS
I love my C4 ..😊
That is what this hobby is all about! Lyle :)
'91 6-speed---my favorite of the breed! Lyle:)
My 1994 C4 convertible and I have been together for 27 years. I have spent more money on oil changes then anything else.
Insurance with Allstate was so inexpensive that I had a $100 deductible for the first 10 years.
That is a good point that I should have mentioned...insurance on those cars is really low if you are over 25. Lyle :)
Very well said! Enjoy that beast! Lyle :)
I have a 96, after youtubeing I would gotten a 89 like yours
Thanks
Have a C3 C4(93) Conv
and C6 GS.
There are quite a few new cars that are a tight fit
Thanks
great assessment!
I'm happy that you are living the dream, my friend! Lyle :)

Very well articulated sir.. BRAVO 👍
I understand that later cars are better in every way. BUT. The C4 is the best looking Corvette ever made. So, i would only ever buy C4's.
I love my 96 C4, definitely harder to get out of as I get older, but very fun to drive.
Cheers.
I couldn't imagine a more beautiful place to drive a Corvette Convertible!! :) Lyle
You and I are only 2 years apart, so I can absolutely understand why you love the Red '88. :) Lyle
What do you think of the LS1 after having an LT4?
Good morning, It's hard to compare; I owned th 96 Collections Edition some 20 years ago. However, the LS4 was a beast, but the LS1 is so much more refined, minus the notorious electrical issues.@@wguthridge
Not apprised at all these cars are getting noticed. Manual trans, v8, tear drive cars are very fun to drive!! Great video Lyle. Thank you for putting it up!

I appreciate this video. I enjoy my 89. thanks for the information.
Thanks for watching! Continue to enjoy it!! Lyle :)
I've owned an 89 for about 3 years now. I also really enjoy the weighting of the steering wheel. My only struggle right now is trying to figure out why the O2 sensor isn't working with ECM. That might keep me busy this winter...
I love my 89 as well. The 80s styling is just awesome. Everything like the pop ups, digi dash, clamshell hood....
I purchased my 89 that was my father-in-laws car after he passed away. I really didn't know much about them and the mechanic I brought it to had a similar opinion to you based on how hard they are to work on. I can totally understand. I have learned a lot watching your videos. Take care.. Rob@@csvette
Sledgehammer, enough said. The C4 was America’s first super car. Almost 1000hp 255 top speed in the late 80’s.
It really set the Corvette apart from everything else, didn't it? :) Lyle
I was lucky enough to come across a C4 Grand Sport with the Z51 suspension and it has been such an incredible car to enjoy. The best of the breed, I think.
I just picked up my first C4 ( 95 ) and I'm loving the information on your channel.
CHEERS

Great video! I’ve owned a 92 Convertible for the last few years and I love driving it. It really makes driving to work a joy in the summer!
Best thing we can do for these cars is to drive them!! Lyle :)
You definitely scored on that one! Lyle :)
Wow Lyle, Thanks for telling it like it is, with C4's. Also, Thanks for all your help with mine. Plus, Chris! Look forward to the ongoing adventures in the world of Corvettes.
You've made me feel a little better about my 1990.thanks I needed that. Nosale 🙏🏾
Nice video!! I've seen some really nice looking C4's for very low money! Thanks Lyle!! I enjoy all your videos!!😊
Glad you like them! Thank you for watching!! Lyle :)
I own a mustang and I love a whole lotta cars, but dang I sometimes think about selling my mustang for a decent 96 LT4!!! I love that car
Enjoy her!! :) Lyle
:D :D Lyle
I'm a C5er but that was really interesting and enlightening. Thanks Lyle.
Cheers ;-)
Great video thanks for sharing!
Lyle is slowly becoming one of my favorite TH-camrs 😎
Lyle, first of all I never felt you didn't give the C4 corvette it's propers. You always respected it as a great creation.
I love my LT1 1996. I feel like a super hero putting on his gear when I drive that car.
Long live the corvette and experts like yourself who make these older cars still appreciated and relevent in a more modern car world.
Thank you.
Bought my first Corvette last spring. It's a 94 LT1 auto coupe. It was love at first sight!
I have a 90 C4 Auto (Dark Red Met) and love it. Thanks Lyle for the review of the C4s. Makes me appreciate mine all the more!!
Got an 1989 six-speed. Love the car!
:) Lyle
Love my 96 coupe. It is a lot of fun to drive.
I own a 1987 C4. It has aged very well. Very easy to maintain. Access in the engine bay is roomy. Parts are plentiful unlike the C5.
Excellent!! Keep taking good care of it! Lyle :)
Dude… your balanced approach just keeps on coming…
I love my 93 40th Anniversary for all the reasons you just described.
That was my first Corvette---40th Convertible 6-speed! :) Lyle
@@csvette My first too 1993 Corvette---40th coupe ruby red z25, and still have it
In 2018 I was looking for a fun car and had always liked the C4 platform especially the body and interior changes in the 91 and up.
I have a 1986 C4 convertible and absolutely love this car
Excellent video as always, Lyle. Thank you.
I agree completely. We forget how advanced and balanced it was for the times! Lyle :)
What was
nice was the traction control along with the antilock brakes with the knowledge from the dealership to drive that car respectfully and that car will always get you home and it sure did we never had a problem with it.
Enjoy!! Lyle
I own a 1993 conv c4 just flushed my coolant today 😂 I'm in love with it and happy I have 68k miles
Take care of your fluids, and they will take care of you! :) Lyle
A C4 convertible owner here. I've had mine for 28 fun filled years and it still looks amazing and turns plenty of heads. In my humble opinion, the best looking body style of them all... except maybe the new mid engine.😊😍
I am an owner of a 96 C4, Collectors Edition
I bought cause it fit my budget at that time, I have been more than satisfied
Surprisingly amount of torque and power, I'm also surprised whenever I fuel up, so many young guys tell me how much they luv the beauty of the car
I get so many questions at stoplights and diners all over the country about the car
It's been very reliable and dependable, I've driven from Miami up to Pennsylvania, out to Montana and Arizona, all with no probs or issues
Lotsa luv out there for the C4, hopefully many more miles and adventures ahead...
