It's the one where some of my best childhood gaming memories come from. Rounds of Diddy Kong racing or Mario Kart, GoldenEye matches, me and my little brother playing through Ocarina of Time together, getting to watch him fall in love with zelda, he was too young to really get LoZ and Adventure of Link, he became obsessed with Zelda for a while because of that game, my mom made him a Link costume for Halloween one year, we rented that game over and over again, but never bought it, we got majora's mask and later windwaker though. So many games though we all played together, smash Bros, mario party(controller killing bastard that it is), conkers bad fur day muliplayer(literally the best multiplayer death matches ever conceived. The beach...omg...all of them just pure fun), i dunno so many games. So many great 4 player games, too many to list. The N64 was the best system to get a bunch of people in a room together and just have fun. No other system has managed to match this except for some GameCube games. Sure, there was a bunch of bad games, but there was so much experimentation and just a general focus on fun. I really miss that era of gaming. One of the worst N64 games I played was Donkey Kong 64. It was very difficult and frustrating for me. I had a couple of meltdowns because I had such a hard time with that game!
This is a very nostalgic video to me, I remember renting a lot of N64 games and sometimes getting stinkers such as these... Mortal Kombat Mythologies was actually more Solid on the PS1 than on the N64. The 6 button layout doesn’t work well on the N64 controller (you gotta mess with the control setup to see what work best for you) compared to the 4 button layout on the PS1 remote. The 4 face buttons are for attacks while the numbered L & R shoulder buttons are set to turning, blocking, running and interacting. Jumping Diagonally also feels better with the PS1’s D-Pad than the N64’s because it doesn’t feel as stiff. Finally the PS1 game has FMVs as opposed to still images on N64. Which are a double edged sword for beginners. They’re good to watch because they add to the story but the reason why they’re also bad is because when Sub-Zero falls to his death in various situations on Levels 2,4,5,6&7. The death cutscene for that level plays every time and never stops. Leading toward frustration. Its a challenging game but it becomes a breeze once you know it well enough. Think of it like Castlevania 2 or TMNT1 on NES. They’re all flawed games but a few people actually understand and enjoy them. If you do a 5 more bad games on the PS1. I’d take a look at MKSpecial Forces and Spawn the Eternal.
Quest 64 is also a contender. The gameplay is actually one-of-a-kind, but the production was rushed and you can tell because the game just feels empty, copy-pasted, with meaninglessly long, winding dungeons; plus a messed up levelling system and a few broken spells that are literally required to beat the game, but you only know that if you read a guide.
I remember renting Quest 64 as a 12 year old, not realizing how terrible it was. I beat it over that weekend, I still remember getting down to my last healing item on the final boss and just squeaking it out. Good memories.
Favorite N64 game, one of like, 4 games that I did not trade for store credit: Wave Race 64. Man! I can't even try and estimate how many hours friends and I spent playing Wave Race.
@A World Under A Spell I don't think the N64 was terrible. It had a lot of good games and for the time, it's graphics were really good. Ofcourse it had some terrible games too, but I don't think your opinion represents the general sentiment towards the N64.
@A World Under A Spell I don't know if you watch Sega Lord X but he named the N64 as his favorite non Sega console of all time. All of my friends have pretty fond memories of the N64. I don't think you exactly have the popular opinion here.
Looking back the n64 was an amazing console beyond the Mario, Goldeneye, Kart and Zelda. A lot of stinkers for sure and a lot of underrated games too. From what I recall (I’m 42 so I had this system over 20 years ago) some of the worst games for me was Hybrid Heaven, Superman64, and I think there was a bubsy game . The best underrated/ obscure ones Glover 64 Goemon 64 Castlevania 64 California racing Blast corps Gauntlet Can’t believe I got rid of it years ago. Probably had 30+ games for it too. Favorites: Mario 64 Zelda TooT Mario Kart 64 Goemon 64 Cruising World or USA (can’t remember) Some of the WWF games
Sub-Zero is actually a decent game. That first hallway with the pillars is typically cited when bashing it. However, I pretty much breezed through them with a tip from Nintendo Power - stand next to the pillars and punch to trigger them. There's some fun platforming and good atmosphere later in that level, and Sub-Zero's ice attacks are fun as always. With similar tips, I had a fairly good time with the first two levels. However, the difficulty suddenly shoots up at the second level boss, and the third level is mazelike to a painful degree, where I had to stop because it was a rental. Aside from the difficulty curve and unlockable moves that are effectively impossible to pull off (they weren't strictly needed in the areas I played, but not being able to perform them eventually makes the fighting annoyingly repetitive), the big problem with the game is the poorly defined 2D graphics. It's often hard to tell what anything is. You can get used to them, but more 3D models and brighter backgrounds would've been the proper answer. The worst game I've played on the system is Starshot: Space Circus Fever. It's a 3D platformer that gets almost everything wrong. The graphics are ok, but the camera is the worst of any 3D platformer I've played, the level designs aren't fun, the characters and plot are just 'there', you often have no idea where to go or how to complete your objective, and it feels technically rough/non-fluid.
I know I'm a weirdo but, my two favorite games for N64 are Pilotwings and Blast C.O.R.P.S. They were so well made and different. Mario is No:3 and Ocarina of Time is 4th.
I hated that Superman game and those damn rings.I wish that whoever made that stupid game, would spend an entire eternity trying to fly in those rings.
Reviewing games from a modern perspective; most N64 gamers were children back then and the gameplay was realistic to them back then as much as old movies to older generations of their time.
Superman64 had a troubled development. The licensing manager from WB changed halfway and tried to sabotage it because he wanted EA as the licensee. There is a video by Matt McMuscles about it and also an article on Retro Gamer magazine.
Wow mk mythologies in the top 5? The level design alone id have to agree for the n64 library. Ps1 i dont think i could put mk mythologies: SZ in the top 5 bad games though there were just so many more games therefore more stinkers lol
I think everyone thought the Sub-Zero game was going to be awesome. That ands the Superman game were the last straws for me. Soon after I sold my 64 and moved on the PS.
Really, I think I made a mistake buying the N64 in 1998 instead of getting a PlayStation. I was a BIG Nintendo fanboy back then. The NES and SNES were great systems.... So I thought the N64 would be a killer system. Boy was I wrong. I mean, yes the N64 had some really great games. Goldeneye, Mario 64, Zelda series, Turok, Body Harvest, Perfect Dark, Castlevania, Duke 64 and Paper Mario ..(oh and Quake 64 wasn't bad). And besides maybe a couple fighting games (I wasn't big on fighting games, but there were a couple). That about sums up the good ones. The rest of the library were just hoardes of fighting and sports games....and mediocre ports of other games. I was an avid RPG fan..and N64 had absolute SQUAT when it came to RPG/Adventure games. I think it had what.... a grand total of FOUR RPG types. And don't get me started on Quest 64..😲👎😬 Meanwhile, PlayStation was overflowing with them. I missed out bigtime. I'm willing to pick up an old PlayStation just so I can play all those goodies.
Already 25 years old..... 😨 Agreed... there are so many awesome games. Super Man ... yeah I knew for sure whahaha that was the Number 1 🤣 only.. 3:15 MK did play that game a lot... including some rage modes here 🙄
Im 60 now and started back in SNES days.Still have all my Nintendo hardware.Dont have many 64 games but they are all top notch.Perfect Dark,Goldeneye.Mario 64,f1 racing game,Turok.
Wow if you continue talking about bad games on the n64, you're in for a lot of videos cause i think there are not more than 10 good games on this console. I was so frustrated with the bad games each time that i 've rented one that after only 2-3 months owning my nintendo 64 i sold it to buy myself a playstation. That was one of the best desisions i made in my life. Playing ff7 after the so deceiving Quest 64 made me appreciate my decision back then. I really like your videos Jonh, you are in my top 5 youtuber i watch. Keep up your goid work!! 😆
I own 90 games for the N64, and I think all of them are worth playing. Saying the N64 only has 10 good games is a myth. Yet you hear that so much that many people, like you, now believe it is true.
I enjoyed my N64 back in the day. However, looking back on it, it had A LOT of bad games. Developers were just learning 3D and would often put out broken games. It had some great games but the N64 is one of my least favorite systems.
I remember 12 year old me having fun with carmageddon 64. Once you get the 'godrod' it feels good to go around challenging yourself to win races by killing zombies. I can't believe I remember this.
Yeah i remember picking up the superman game cause of that awesome cover at the rental store. Was so excited and just hearing the “flying noise” is giving me flashbacks. What a disapointment.
This system was my least favorite system out of pretty much any video game system. My friend had one but I refuse to buy one just because of all the crappy games. Even back then I laughed at the graphics they were always muddy. We played Goldeneye. And we'll always rent new games but I just thought the system was just laughable all around. Maybe three good games total. I forgot all about the sub-zero game too.
There's a reason Nintendo never made a N64 mini.... There's not enough games anyone actually wants to replay to justify the experiment. The worst system nintendo ever made.
I liked the video but I feel like these 5 Worst Of videos would greatly benefit from a longer runtime.. maybe 15 minutes total? I wanted to hear a lot more of your thoughts on some of these games, especially Superman 64 but it was over before it started

The sad thing is, I think they used the Superman game as inspiration to create DC Universe Online, at least those ring flights.
I always lost my direction after every battle. N64 always lacked RPGs compared to PS1 and this is one of the worst.
Seemed like once you unlocked the top "earth" spell the game was on easy mode.
When every game was covered by AVGN... you know it’s bad! Good vid brother 💯💯
I paid$75 for Superman 64...I still am upset about this
Holy crap hahahahaha that sucks sorry to hear that lol
Haven't watched, but expecting to see Mortal Kombat Mythologies Sub Zero and Superman 64.
sub zero was… mediocre imo
What camera do you use? The picture is super crisp!
Sony a6100
Thank you, great video! Love your stuff!
First video of John I'm watching and, first thing I can say about him, he looks like a cool guy to drink a beer with.
All I can think is day one of asking if john wants a beer with us.
Flying through rings was actually the best part of Superman 64. It was all downhill from there.
This must be the best critisism I've ever heard. 😂
Funny how most of these had much better predecessors on the Super Nintendo.
The 64 was difficult and new to work with.... unfortunately things like Castlevania suffered so hard 😂
Batman and Robin by Konami and Death and Return of Superman by Sunsoft got it right
@@infinidominion Castlevania 64 is still a good game for me. Not perfect but loved it.
Great video, John! Please increase the duration a little bit, it would be even more enjoyable!
That red logo on Batman's suit reminds me too much of the logo of Hordak's Evil Horde....
The best underrated/ obscure ones
Glover 64
Goemon 64
Castlevania 64
California racing
Blast corps
Gauntlet
Can’t believe I got rid of it years ago. Probably had 30+ games for it too.
Favorites:
Mario 64
Zelda TooT
Mario Kart 64
Goemon 64
Cruising World or USA (can’t remember)
Some of the WWF games
I keep forgetting MK Mythologies is an N64 game, it looks like the 16-bit MKs! 😂
NBA in the zone. I remember paying 60$ for that game lol.
I know I'm a weirdo but, my two favorite games for N64 are Pilotwings and Blast C.O.R.P.S. They were so well made and different. Mario is No:3 and Ocarina of Time is 4th.
That fog? Oh um that's uh, kryptonite fog! Yeah! That's what it is! Its a feature! Not bad graphics😆
It’s amazing that somebody kept these shitty games in mint condition.
I hated that Superman game and those damn rings.I wish that whoever made that stupid game, would spend an entire eternity trying to fly in those rings.
Lmfao
Reviewing games from a modern perspective; most N64 gamers were children back then and the gameplay was realistic to them back then as much as old movies to older generations of their time.
Man, n64 hat and shirt... its like you took us back in time to my childhood.
Brand New! Speaking of childhoods
That Power Rangers running animation is amazing.
😂Yes
That Mighty Morphin run animation........ HAHAHA!
First thing I noticed. Poor girl looks like she shit her britches.
I’m glad I never owned Superman 64.
I never even heard of it. I mainly played Nintendo games.
Can you do a video on the Worst Dreamcast games?
Fun fact: Superman for Nintendo 64 was never actually named “Superman 64”.
That game was a trash can of flaming dookie
Didn't know that. 🤔🤔🤔
I think everyone thought the Sub-Zero game was going to be awesome. That ands the Superman game were the last straws for me. Soon after I sold my 64 and moved on the PS.
MK Mythologies is one of the all time let downs. This could/should have been so much better.
I'm willing to pick up an old PlayStation just so I can play all those goodies.
you know what isn't a shit game
clay fighters 63 1/3
hell no CF63 1/3 is great, you just havent given it a real chance, when you learn how to play it it's quite fun.
@@UltimateGamerCC thats what i said lol it wasn't a bad game
@@1jzboi oops lol i totally read that wrong, i need to read slower when i'm tired, would save me the embarrassment.
@@UltimateGamerCC hahaha i loved that game with my heart
Already 25 years old..... 😨
Agreed... there are so many awesome games.
Super Man ... yeah I knew for sure whahaha that was the Number 1 🤣
only.. 3:15 MK did play that game a lot... including some rage modes here 🙄
Had to disagree for MK Mythologies, had a lot of fun on PS, and it is better than the 64, got the cutscenes much better.
agreed
The cut scenes were so terrible they were great.
Yeah, he must have had those two mixed up. PS1 version is definitely better.
@@whosaidthat84 exactly jajajajaja
John, you look like a mascot character from an unreleased 90's game console lol. Love your content man, keep up the good work!
I briefly worked on the PS1 version of the Superman game with Titus. It was just about as bad as you would imagine.
Really? Can you tell me more about its "quality" and such?
I enjoyed my N64 back in the day. However, looking back on it, it had A LOT of bad games. Developers were just learning 3D and would often put out broken games. It had some great games but the N64 is one of my least favorite systems.
You should be a guest on an AVGN episode. Imagine John Hancock just ripping a shitty game apart nerd style.
I remember 12 year old me having fun with carmageddon 64. Once you get the 'godrod' it feels good to go around challenging yourself to win races by killing zombies. I can't believe I remember this.
OG’s instantly thought Superman 64
Your voice. Reckett Ralph is that you? I remember trying the batman on n64 and I had the same response. It is complete and utter garbaaaaage.
I just started watching this, but I'm calling it right now.
Superman at #1!
lmao I had the exact same thought.
Big fat "DUH!!!!!"
Yeah i remember picking up the superman game cause of that awesome cover at the rental store. Was so excited and just hearing the “flying noise” is giving me flashbacks. What a disapointment.
I remember my brother going to Target and bringing home Superman 64, Wipeout 64 and ISSoccer 64 as a kid. Guess which one got played the least
Quest 64 aka Holy Magic Century... My goodness, what a colossal waste of cartridges that was.
I loved perfect dark that was🔥
Oh god yes. Especially the multiplayer vs bots. Having the bots be max difficulty was nightmare inducing
@@johnbubba1143 you know it best.
Is the museum project still on? I think that it is a great idea. We need one of these in the area
I loved how Superman 64 wrote their shitty graphics into the story. "It's not crappy rendering, it's kryptonite fog.."
lmfao
You are a very upbeat happy fellow, with a love of gaming. Very happy to subscribe 😃
You deserve a thumbs up just for having to play this sh1t !
I liked the video but I feel like these 5 Worst Of videos would greatly benefit from a longer runtime.. maybe 15 minutes total? I wanted to hear a lot more of your thoughts on some of these games, especially Superman 64 but it was over before it started
Fond memories of GoldenEye John and DID SOMEONE SAY SUPERMAN 64!!!
I made the mistake of buying superman 64 and have regretted it everyday since that day onwards
Bio Freaks and Dark Rift Are some of the worst N64 Fighting Games, and Hercules the Legendary Journey is Terrible for N64
Both bad, but the nod goes to Dark Rift for not working on all TV sets back in the day.
@@johnhancockretro The only good thing about Dark Rift was that it was one of the few titles on the 64 that ran at 60 FPS.
When I see these new videos... it makes my night! 🔥🔥🔥
Haven't watched this yet but Superman has to be on this list, calling it now. lol
Thought the same thing
I'll be damned if it ain't lol
