Would u have put in Metroid: Other M in the dishonorable mentions list? I LOVE Metroid but F the Other M. :( BTW, I am lookin' forward to the upcoming Metroid 2D game. :)
Probably a 50 to 1 ratio because of all that shovelware they kept pumping out. Just look at the copy & paste job that the Company that made Ninja Bread Man did on all their platformers they released on the Wii.
If you want another wonderful experience literally exactly like Ninjabread Man and Rock n' Roll Adventures, check Trixie in Toyland and Anubis II. Exact same engine, gameplay, etc. all made by the same developer. Love the copy and paste game with a different skin
I couldn't help but notice that the characters from those were balloons in the footage shown of Kawasaki Jet Ski... If that's the same developer that explains why not much effort appears to have been put into that one.
Ninjabread man was supposed to be the first 3D Zool game, but they backed out cuz the engine was so bad oh, so instead they made four games exactly the same on the same engine and platform. And now i see the guy before me said the same thing😂
Ninjabread Man, Rock and Roll Adventures, Anubis 2 and I think Trixie in Toyland are all the same game. That company just made the same game multiple times with different aesthetics to incrase market reach.
Data Design was the Wii equivalent to LGN on the NES and Phoenix Games on the PS2 in Europe. The amount of garbage they sneezed out is staggering, just look at all the games from them that Scott The Woz has covered thus far.
The issue with Wii is that there are a lot of really great games that were hampered and made frustrating because of the input control, the Wii remote. I really really hated playing Twilight Princess and Super Mario Galaxy on Wii. For an important function to be programmed to a physical movement is asinine. When these games were remastered and brought to Wii U and Nintendo Switch with proper tactile controls, the games played perfectly, no issues with input whatsoever! I am just so very happy that Nintendo has gone back to traditional tactile inputs with their games, relegating motion controls as an option or to enhance aiming mechanics (which is a wonderful use for it!).
Exactly!! This is why I avoided it altogether even with a hot new title like Zelda Skyward Sword at the time. Sometimes you just need to stick to the basics.
I recently picked up a copy of Twilight Princess for the Wii because I’d never played it and was so frustrated with the controls I put it down after not even leaving the entry area. I tried again for GameCube and it was SO much better. Like did the playtesters not tell them how bad it was? Or did they just not care?
4 out of 5 of the games in this video, I wasn't surprised that they would be the ones that were made by Data Design Interactive, who had a large control of profits from the Wii software library with a lot of low quality recycled garbage. And to think that Ninjabread Man first started as a Zool 3 and the fact that they not only recycled the game once with Rock n Roll Adventures, but 3 times with Trixie in Toyland, Anubis II, and Casper (though that only came out on the PS2 in Europe, which DDI also had a control of over there as well).
I heard that Ninjabread man was supposed to be a Zool game but they couldn't get licensing or something like that. I'm sure it still would have sucked lol
Thank you for the video! I started collecting "Old" video games several years back, and the Wii has made it to my list of old systems. One of the local video game stores had tons of Wii games, some for as low as 10 cents, so I spent a small (very small) fortune on dozens of video games, and these were all in there. I have to agree, they are all unplayable. The only one I really hoped would be good was Kawasaki Jet Ski. That game was purchased several years ago, and I put about 10 minutes of my life into it before it went into the vault...forever. In my opinion, Wii Sports is the best game ever made for the Wii, which is too bad. It set such a high expectation, and since it came with every Wii, people got to be disappointed over and over again when they bought new games. There were a few exceptions (Super Smash Bros, Super Mario Bros, etc.). I have about 300 physical games for the Wii, and maybe 25 of them are worth playing more than once. Most of the playable ones are games I went out and purchased intentionally as my kids asked for them. I see there have been almost 1600 games released for the Wii, and don't think that 25 mentioned above would grow by a whole lot. My $0.02
For Orbs of Doom, at least in Marble Madness from 1984 you can pick up where you fell off. Level restarts are not only brutal but inexcusable in modern games. Ninjabread Man had a lot of potential as an idea, such the let down. Wii had many terrible games due to controls, but plenty because of story and design as well. Some I would include are Alvin and the Chipmunks, Beastly, Excite Truck, Pictionary, Rayman Raving Rabbis 1 & 2, Six Flags Fun Park, Star Wars: The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels, X-Men: Destiny, and the Wipeout series.
Hey John, which console would you pick between the Wii and the Wii U?. I mean, which one has better and exclusive games between its own library and the retrocompatible one (gamecube and wii, respectively), better peripherals, etc and more fun at the end.
I had a wii game called "build-n-race". You could make your own tracks, which was fun to do. But the actual car physics sucked. Like the cars drove fine, but the steering was stiff and felt like you were glued to the road and you had to slow down a whole lot to make tight turns. You couldn't really drift. Plus there were cars in the back of the case that weren't even in the game.
i actually had to turn my head with that first monkey ball style game you were showing. As it literally was making me nauseous with my motion sickness kicking in. Ugh lol
I still enjoy collecting for the Wii, sometimes though, I feel like I get odd looks from retro game store workers when I pick up a Wii game that has versions on the PS3 or Xbox 360.

Random question for you John. If you ever have, or had, a console system that fails on you or is acting up, Do you attempt to repair it yourself, pay someone else to fix it, or buy a replacement console? What is your preference?
For older consoles, I always try to do simple repairs myself. Sometimes a console may act up with a loose wire or be dirty. I have paid to have consoles repaired and modded with better video mods.
@@johnhancockretro Thanks for the response. Some consoles are definitely easier to repair than others. I'm currently trying to repair a New 3ds XL and failing at it. Oh well. Love the content man, I look forward to your next video 👍
Oh man! I think I've come across Ninjabread Man before, but before I picked it up I quickly checked its review scores on my smart phone. Which isn't something I always do for games I don't know, or often or take heed of, but when they're overwhelmingly to one side, you know what its gonna be!
It's the curse that has to endure the most popular console of each generation, they get more games than their competition but among them there will be a lot of junk.
Rock and Roll Adventure really missed a beat. They could have made level music with certain instruments out of whack and you have to recognize the instrument to make it play correctly. It could have at least been somewhat educational..
You should try “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer”. It was suppose to be based on the 1964 Christmas special, and the graphics looked pretty good, as they gave it that film graininess and dust/dirt that you get from the TV special, and the character models were very true how they appeared in the 60’s. However, the voice acting was also a let down as the voice of the Snowman narrator (and the Snowman looked liked Burl Ives just like the TV special) didn’t even sound close to how Burl Ives’ sounded in the 1964 special. They could’ve at least got the guy who voiced the Snowman reporter in the 2001 “Rudolph and the Island of Misfit Toys” and made the snowman look like that character. But, nope the voice didn’t even sound like that guy! Plus, the Wii game only lasts for 11 minutes and it’s 4 mini-games--it plays more like a demo than an actual game!. At least the DS version had over an hour of content.
Ninjabread Man really is an awful game. It was originally released on PS2 and Windows in Europe around two years before it was ported to Wii. Ot's also believed that the devs also initially pitched it as a 3D entry in the long dormant Zool franchise but the owners of the Zool IP passed on it (unsurprisingly).
There is a game called Cabela's hunter which is fine until you get to the bowhunting where they forgot to make the animals ever get within hunting distance and you have to take pot shots in the air timing it to lucky hit the close stuff if that happened. However the bow-fishing worked fine when I saw and tried that. The game other then that did not suck, just that one part and boy was it a big mistake. How we got the Game I forget other then it must have been on sale at a Cabela's for around or under $10 USA.
I'm going to be honest. I only watched this video to make sure that "Shadows of Katmai" wasn't on the list. It's closest video game equivalent to a "so bad it's good cult classic."
What a time the Wii was. So many interesting Shovelware titles. Stephenplays did Extra Life last year with the Wii Library. Saw some crazy stuff that day. Anyway, figured Ninjabread Man would be on here.
I only bought one shovelware game on the Wii; Ocean Commander by Valcon. It turned out to be a bland and unimaginative shooter. But to be fair, at least it was a fully functional game. It looked OK and it ran well, but with its simplistic gameplay, I suspect that only really young kids might get any enjoyment out of it.
3 of those games also had a PS2 version and they could've easily added support for GameCube or classic controllers in the Wii version for those who don't like motion controls.
Ooh! I have one that is far, far worse than any of those. So bad it wasn’t worth it even if it was free. We bought it used for $5, for our kids, just a “this should be fun for a few hours” purchase. It’s only $5, right? Wrong. I present “M&Ms Beach Party” for the Nintendo Wii. If Nintendo had any minimum quality standards at the time, I’d be shocked. “It booted up” must have been as far as they tested. This game is so pointless, so broken, so badly made, we forced the retailer refund our money - not because $5 was that important to us, but because this game was so bad it was truly insulting. Definitely the worst I’ve ever played, on any system, ever in my decades of gaming. Even for very small children, it was a complete and frustrating waste of time. It’s not even in the “it’s so bad, it’s good“ category - whoever developed this mess should be ashamed. This kid (like 1/3 my age) says it all better than I can. I was rolling on the floor watching his review th-cam.com/video/0gHPcc708kg/w-d-xo.html
Worst game I ever played on the Wii was "Avatar: The Game." I tried playing the PC version thinking, "Oh, I get to choose whether I'm on the side of the humans or the Na'vi, that's cool. The graphics are pretty good too." But unfortunately my computer wouldn't really play it. Then I get the Wii form, and I'm like, "Wait....I'm just some rogue hunter with a bow killing humans and flying through obstacle courses? There's not even a good story in this game! The graphics are so late 90's, the levels are boring, and I don't even get to choose sides for crying out loud!"
Those last two games make me think of Bubsy 3D for some reason, maybe that should have been ported to the Wii. It would have fit right in with the rest of the shovelware lol. I honestly can't name any really terrible games that I've played on Wii, mostly because I'm typically picky with the games I play especially those I buy. I only have a few Wii games anyway which are Xenoblade Chronicles (my favorite), Metroid Prime Trilogy, New Super Mario Bros Wii, Mario Galaxy 2, Smash Bros Brawl, The Last Story, Twilight Princess, Skyward Sword, WarioWare Smooth Moves, Super Paper Mario, and easily the worst game I have... My Sims. I only got My Sims because of PeanutButterGamer, just to see if it was as bad as he made it seem lol. Is My Sims a good game? No. Is it as bad as some of those shown in this video? Not really, though I'd call it mediocre... maybe average if I'm in a good mood.
You don't know broken until you played The Oregon Trail. We literally put the controller down and was having more success. It was so bad, I unplugged my wii and sold everything for it soon after. So many more better systems and games out there.
Wasn't Ninjabread Man originally supposed to be a Zool reboot before Data Design lost the rights? Apparently, it's why all the levels are all candy themed, like the ones in the original Zool games were. They just needed to change the character model. Lucky for any Zool fans out there, talk about dodging a bullet!
I've got some crossword puzzle game for the wii. My wife's aunt gave us all her wii stuff, along with some games. We will probably never try it, so I don't know if it's bad or not. But, crossword puzzle. Videogame.
Carnival Games was pretty bad. Unknown developers or 3rd Party the Wii detection on the remotes was most of the time bad. I wish Nintendo did a better job of regulating these games I think that’s what destroyed the Wii for me.
DDI (Bold, DSiware they have multiple names, technically still around on switch at least), has a LOT more to review. Cocoto series (platformer, kart racer), Action Girlz racing, M & Ms games (kart racer, platformer and a party game) There's far more than that though. Its practically a 1 developer bargain bin trap filler of the wii generation and what gave the wii its bad reputation for shovelware (or at least contributed to it, akin to ET on 2600 level)
Ninjabread Man, Anubis II & Rock 'N Roll Adventures were all from the same developer. Just with a different coat of paint. Myth Makers: Orbs of Doomm, Myth Makers: Trixie in Toyland & Myth Makers: Super Kart GP, Fireplacing (WiiWare), The Smurfs Dance Party, Cid the Dummy, Chicken Shoot and Major Minor's Majestic March are also terrible Wii games.
At least they made an attempt, the real appalling shovel ware can be found on devices like the My Arcade 220 games in one, plug and play systems. Play those and you very well may get ill.
For every Super Mario Galaxy, there must have been 20 crap shovelware licensed games. I’m a Nintendo fanboy... but, I hated the Wii. I thought the Wii U was a breath of fresh air. And the Diddy Kong hat is epic! I thought I was the only Diddy fan. I’ve got to to seek it out!
There are so many stinkers on wii. I would blame the gimmick controls. I just can't believe there were not more quality homebrew games to show up. And in a internet savvy world I find it hilarious that those bad games managed to still sell.
By its nature shovelware has to be cheap to produce. During the Wii's generation, a big issue was that the PS3 and X360 were expensive to develop games for because of the switch to HD. Normally shovelware gets spread out across all platforms but in this case it was not economically feasible so all the shovelware flowed to the one console where it could still be made affordably, the Wii. So in theory the Wii probably got three consoles' worth of shovelware. Since then true shovelware of this magnitude has moved to phones. With most old consoles I'm willing to take a gamble on a random title I've never heard of if it's only a couple of bucks but not the Wii. If I have not heard that a Wii game is good from multiple sources I'm not going anywhere near it.
If you get a Nintendo console, really most people should just stick with the first party, Nintendo developed games. In regards to the Wii, the main issue was that the motion control was the main way to play. It's a gimmick and one that didn't work that well.
what are you talking about? it was insanely popular, and most of nintendos games used it very well. Is it a gimmick? motion controll is still evident in modern consoles, so maybe you just mean, it's not for you :P
I disagree with "you should stick to first party." Except for the Wii U (for obvious reasons), 3rd party games made up the vast majority of my collection. In the case of the Wii, I'd say my favorite games are: Cursed Mountain, ExciteBots, Rayman Origins, Red Steel 2 and Speed Racer. Only one of those was published by Nintendo.
@@jonas7417 I assume that's a response to me putting Cursed Mountain on my list. To be honest, I probably have too high of an opinion of that title, but it was the first horror game I ever played. After all, I can only list the games I actually played and my Wii collection wasn't real huge. I know a lot of people say that was a game "ruined by motion controls" but I still love motion and I also thought the game had great atmosphere.
Ten Pin Alley 2 made me rage so bad. The original Ten Pin Alley on the Saturn was so good and fun, and the sequel was supposed to originally come out on the PS2 and the original Xbox. It got shelved until Wii Sports came out and got insanely popular for its bowling game. So they brought Ten Pin Alley 2 out for the Wii and it’s total garbage. Controls are completely broken. Avoid at all costs. Play the original, or Wii Sports bowling.
I had the bad luck of picking up orbs of doom! But that’s why I wanted to say something about collector’s staying away from Wii games! The overwhelming Over abundance not only bad games but games period that nothing is really worth collecting in my opinion unless it’s was a Wii only game! Some remastered physical edition of some Sega Saturn games for the Wii is the exception for this rule. But not by much! I have a Wii( who doesn’t?) and some games but I refuse to pay very much for anything on the Wii. I wish that they would have made another physical release of Nights Journey of Dreams on the Sega Saturn on the Wii for another console but it is what it is! Just my opinion and almost all my friends say the same exact thing about the Wii! I paid $10 for Wii console in the box never opened up until I bought it. I feel I probably paid to much!
Most, if not all of the games from Data Design blow. Banana Blitz is better than the first game in the list, and Wave Race Blue Storm for the Gamecube controls better than the Kawasaki game.

Ninja Bread Man is actually a reskinned rejected Zool 3D game, it all started from there.

also the simpsons game?
That awkward moment when you realize that every bit of Wii shovelware is now old enough for the AVGN to cover it in an episode...
He Made a joke about that over 10 years ago. 😅
Ninjabread Man, Rock and Roll Adventures, Anubis 2 and I think Trixie in Toyland are all the same game. That company just made the same game multiple times with different aesthetics to incrase market reach.
Why did Nitnendo license all of this crap? I mean, it seems like they literally greenlit anything that showed up on their desk.

I tried again for GameCube and it was SO much better. Like did the playtesters not tell them how bad it was? Or did they just not care?
But the Wii U failed due to some games needing two heads and two arms to play the game like a Siamese twin.
The wii sports games, and Madworld worked perfectly fine.
Back in the day, buying a bad game for me, wasn’t all that bad. I’d just use my gameshark or game genie to complete it or just explore.

I'm not sure if I should be shocked they weren't ALL DDI titles.
When I was a kid I had that mini Pac-Man arcade you have there in the background. The sound of that thing will be forever etched in my brain.
The first game totally looked like it could've been on the N64.
@Google Ghey I think that is a praise to the N64 and how good it was.
Balls of Fury, you know a game is bad when the replay clearly shows the paddle completely missing the pong despite the hit.
I'm absolutely loving this series.

I heard that Ninjabread man was supposed to be a Zool game but they couldn't get licensing or something like that. I'm sure it still would have sucked lol
As I recall, they had the licence taken off them when they showed a 3-level demo to the licence owners. Hence why Ninjabread Man only has 3 levels.
Any game that forces you to sit through a long boring tutorial is a bad game... who has the time for that.
I knew that Ninjabread Men would be on the list. It can be used as the purest example of shovelware.

If you want a good Monkey Ball clone, Marble Saga is legit.
What a time the Wii was. So many interesting Shovelware titles. Stephenplays did Extra Life last year with the Wii Library. Saw some crazy stuff that day.
Anyway, figured Ninjabread Man would be on here.
Loving this series of videos 👌👌👌
How do you screw up table tennis? It’s basically “Pong” with better graphics & motion controls! Smh…
The Wii might have to best (or I guess worst in this case) shovelware of any console ever lol
The most Shovel and shovel cloned by same company games.
I’m amazed this isn’t just five of the Myth Makers series.
All clones of the Gingerbread game? Yeah those stunk just by looking at the titles
Does anyone even play these before sending them out??
4 of the 5 games you chose were made by the same company Data Design Interactive
I don't think they ever made a single good game
"You are going to die a lot" sounds like soulsborne genre promosentence rather than sunnymooded Wii game 🤣
I wish Nintendo did a better job of regulating these games I think that’s what destroyed the Wii for me.
his copy of Monkey Ball was something cool, but not better than Monkey Ball, and his Elvis Presley game was weird
The Wii’s shovelware library is legendary
I agree and that was due to games from the same company that cloned themselves.
Why don’t you use 4:3 ratio for video resolution?
Before watching: How many are DDI games?
After watching: 4 out of 5. Not sure if I would be more or less shocked if it were all of them.
I’ve got to to seek it out!
i would love videos with your top 10 of all 2d platformers, rpgs, racers etc across all systems, that would be cool videos
If I have not heard that a Wii game is good from multiple sources I'm not going anywhere near it.
you could do a whole series on data design interactive games
@@ressljs resident evil 4 was WAY better on the wii, and dead space extraction is a "must play"
@@ressljs no i was just supporting your argument against xxnike, wii had great 1st and 3rd party games
The jet ski game has Ninjabread Man balloons...why??
That first game looked like a PS1 game.
How about all of the terrible 20 dollar Game Show based games. 10,000 Dollar Pyramid anyone?
Damn John, picking some awful games for the Wii is easy. The tough part had to be narrowing it down to 5.
I love this series keep it up!
I'm surprised on M&M kart racer or M&M games wasn't on the list.
Ninjabread Man was initially gonna be a brand new Zool game.
Most, if not all of the games from Data Design blow. Banana Blitz is better than the first game in the list, and Wave Race Blue Storm for the Gamecube controls better than the Kawasaki game.
Hancock's face in the thumbnail smells like somebody made doo doo playing their Wii Wii
This is a really great series. So many bad games out there!
About 95% of games released on this console are shovel ware. Literally no reason to buy this thing for remaining 5%.
du taler som du har forstand til
I've never seen a jet ski stop so fast 🤣
