    This is probably his saddest yet poignant ending. He once again leaves with nothing and has to go on his way alone. But he doesn’t care. Even though he is sad, he decides to hold his head high and keep moving forward. Plus also its symbolic. This movie was made not long after The Jazz Singer was released. The era of silent films was ending and Charlie knew that the world was gonna move on without the Tramp.

      But the world never moved on without the tramp. He still made successful movies and he is still the greatest.

      @WaltsNephew 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@MomoTseng The sheer emotion and character development is absolutely heart-wrenching and flawless. And, of course, the signature Chaplin ending: the Tramp walks away with an iris close from the camera. You can't do much better than that hahaha

      Unless you also consider the endings to City Lights and Modern Times!

    • @WaltsNephew

      @@brocksp True; Modern Times ends the silent era (for the moment) and the tramp's long reign (at that moment), while City Lights left the audience in a tearful joy. But, personally, I think The Circus shows the tramp's complexity as a character and his resilience for being able to persevere any and all situation

    Starts off with nothing....ends up with nothing. But he can leave with dignity and grace, with his head held high.

    Fantastic ending! It's a bit symbolic to me as since it was Charlie's last fully silent film (City Lights and Modern Times have sound effects and some elements of dialogue) so it kinda represents how the tramp could have gone and carried on with the circus (and carried on making silent films) but instead he chose the other direction and walks out into the distance (to face the future and move on with his life).

    One of my favorite endings of ANY film, let alone a Chaplin film. To me, The Circus is an underrated Chaplin film. It's very funny and emotional. Also, this scene was filmed in Glendale, CA. Just north of the 134, where Woodrow Wilson Middle School is located. The traffic you see in the background :51 is where the 134 is now.
