Take a look at all the missing tiles. Which Thermal Protection System would you rather ride to Earth - Orion or Starship?

Gonna go with Starship. We’ve seen this before, but it’s still cute. Doubted Falcon 9, doubted Crew Dragon, doubted Falcon Heavy, doubting Starship, and then you’re scrambling to catch up and wondering why you’re over a decade behind after choosing the immediate bragging rights over the long term rewards

@@porchmonkey5774 NASA has paid SpaceX almost all of the 2.9 Billion for HLS, and there is no HLS - it's still years away. NASA Administrators have stated they will hold SpaceX to their contract regardless. Delivering HLS for Artemis (even if it is very late and very costly) will happen. Artemis/HLS will be a money loser for SpaceX, there is no doubt about that.
The only doubt right now is can SpaceX actually deliver? Thus far, the Starship program has been everything but successful, and they haven't even gotten to the hard parts yet. Those missing tiles are a huge problem. Solving it could make Starship more expensive, more timely to manufacture, or worse .. heavier. They already are running afoul of NASA mission planners by ballooning the number of orbital propellent pre-launches from 4 to "10ish." That is SpaceX's word - they cannot even provide an actual number.
With Starlink a dud, there isn't really much left to fund this boondoggle. It might be cheaper for SpaceX to apologize, bow out of the Artemis contract, and refund NASA 2.9 billion dollars.

@@porchmonkey5774space shuttle already showed how difficult these kinds of systems are, and this thing is losing it’s tiling on ascent which is way way slower than reentry so it’s even more of a concern that it can’t even make it to reentry with an intact TPS that is there solely for reentry.

The tiles were not tested on ship 25 before flight, on ship 28, every single tile has been tested, it should perform a lot better.

starship is still in its testing phase, Orion is not. the current stage that each vehicle is in is diffrent. you where treating starship like its operational, not still being tested.

I wonder if main cause of missing tiles is lack of sound supression systems of any sort
Look at any better footage of the launch and you can clearly see shockwaves bouncing upwards from the steel plate, which is, ngl kinda to be expected.
