Yeah I really don’t like being told what I want out of gaming. I’m pretty damn well aware what I want- and it’s obvious when I go out of my way to still play stuff like Diablo 2 and private WoW servers before classic hit- hell I even played wc3 and waited the like hour queues to get in games while I watched tv before they came out with that shitshow that reforged was. They ruined it for me, and it was just nostalgia- they were genuinely good games that still hold up.

@@Imbalanxd Its estimated to be hundreds of thousands of people still playing classic WoW (around 300k was the last estimate I saw). Those numbers are frankly pretty damn good, especially for a 15 year old game that you barely need to maintain or develop for.
It not being popular on Twitch does not mean its dead. If that were the case then PUBG would be dead but, surprise, it peaks at or close to half a million concurrent players daily just on steam.
It not being fun to you does not mean its not fun to other people.
There was clearly always a large chunk of people who really wanted classic servers and are still very happy to play on them, the fact that its not or not close to everyone who plays WoW who shares that sentiment doesnt invalidate those who really like the Classic experience.

Nostalrius gave the game such vibrancy and life.. It was insane. It was, at least since the original vanilla and tbc, the hype. I absolutely got hooked on wow. It felt like a world engulfed in a war. Trade was vibrant, people were traveling everywhere, STV has never been more legendary. The servers were actually superior to the garbage vanilla retail uses to this day. On Dragonfang some weeks ago, it could not contain 400 people in a zone without lag, whereas on nostalrius such and even bigger amounts of people worked absolutely flawlessly.
Nostalrius was the peak, not classic. Fuck you Blizzard, for ruining that for me. I still cannot go over the beauty of that world, the attachment to my character, my guild, the memories made with friends.. I tried again on Dragonfang some weeks ago but it was just not the same. You done fucked up, Blizzard, but you are slowly digging your own grave anyway.
May TBC be good, and it likely will be, but I will have neither the time nor the will to participate or race towards it.

Blizzard didn't tell 'em to keep their shit private cause they were planning to launch official servers for that product. if i am a business owner and someone tries to make me lose millions by distributing MY PRODUCT ilegally you can bet your ass that i am coming after them until they dont even think about doing it anymore, this is not a kids game, jobs hang in the balance, real lifes do. what do you think happens when expected revenue does not come thorugh? layoffs! and not your oh so hated CEOs and upper management, no, the people who really need the income get axed because manbabys did not get their way and threw a tantrum and did something illegal.

Blizzard only got on their case after the elysium leak anyway, since they had classic in the works and it would damage them heavily if that shit continued.
You are far too entitled, you live in some kind of world where if you think its okay you can do anything right? just break the law because you think you deserve something or others owe you something. well guess what, nobody owes you shit, and if you break the law do not be suprised when people call you out on it and threaten you with said law.
And in this case Blizz stood to lose millions since again : THEY WERE ALREADY WORKING ON CLASSIC when those geniuses decided to give elysium what was not theirs to give, it is as simple as that.
And for you to think that players somehow have a right to even old outdated games makes you the naive one, they dont nor have they ever had the right, they had the priviledge to use it as long as the OWNER allowed them to use it. and if the owner says NO, then thats that, anything else is against the law.

Of course the music, the background, the story and the lore are also protected and cannot be copied as such. But you could also easily argue in court (and probably win as we saw similar cases recently) that the dungeons layouts with specific boss mechanics cannot be copied. you can do some derivative work, but not copy it exaclty.

  • @Wallcraft_Official
    @Wallcraft_Official 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

The issue that Asmon and many others don't seem to grasp is that private server "code" isn't stolen. Projects like TrinityCore and ManGOS re-built from scratch the entire back-end portion of WoW servers; The only thing that crosses a line is a legal sense is that the server populates its databases from information within the game client. Using the official client breaks the ToS for networked gameplay on non-official servers. And trying to profit from a project like Elysium or Nost is a grey area, which is why servers were hosted in France.
Blizzard doesn't go around shutting down every private server; They only ever go after big names which are profiting from the use of Blizzard assets. That's really what they care about - the millions of particle effects, graphics, meshes and pieces of art that were bought and paid for by Blizzard studios back in the late 90s.
A private server could literally remake all their tables, change all the text and reskin everything and it would technically be a totally different game.

Asmon is absolutely correct that Blizzard didn't have any MANDATE to contact the Nostalrius team and tell them what they were doing, and Nostalrius had no LEGAL RIGHT to release all the code/info.
But that isn't the argument. The fact is that Nostalrius was in the LEGAL wrong from the get go, every milisecond they worked on the private server. And if they didn't get as big as they did and put all that pressure on Blizzard we MIGHT HAVE NEVER gotten classic.
So of course Blizzard didn't have to tell them anything and they had no right to do what they did. But if they had worked through that framework none of this would have happened. So in this case the popular opinion is that the END justified the MEANS. And that is something I find extremely hard to deny since Blizzards official opinion on the classic server was a straight out absolutely clear as day NO.
It's hypocritical to play Classic WoW and in the same breath talk shit about the people who made it happen. It's easy to talk shit after the dirty work has already been done.

Writing code from scratch for a private WoW server is not illegal. The art assets are in the WoW client which is on your local computer, I think, so connecting to a private server is not illegal, tho it's probably against EULA.
The illegal part is trademark/copyright violation when advertising that you are selling a World of Warcraft product.
Operating a WoW private server is illegal, but contributing to the server software implementation is not. This is why the open source WoW server software is still hosted on github, there's nothing really Blizzard can do about it as it just reverse engineers the WoW server code it doesn't copy any of it, since the open source projects never had access to server code.

None of it is Blizzard owned. The whole reason most pservers are immune to being shut down is because they don't actually distribute the game client (most of them anyway), they instead expect you to get it from somewhere else whilke providing connection info to their server which has never so much as touched Blizz's cold, jewish hands. I just feel like private investigators are people that intrude into people's privacy. Working on a biased format that is completely kept secret between the private investigator and the one that hired him/her, so the person that is being investigated doesn't truly know what the exact reason they are being investigated for and if they are being investigated in the first place. What I learned from classic is that, while it is superior to modern wow in too many ways to count, blizz didn't really have a capacity to learn back then. When vanilla initially came out, we used to laugh at "blizzard boys and their casual game". And now, after I've actually played Classic? We were actually right. Every problem they had in vanilla (honor system that discourages large scale pvp and city raids, the world bosses with weird timers that you can kill, like, once in a week if you are lucky and not at your night shift at work or whatever, etc, etc), if they rectified at all, they always rectified in a weird way that damaged some other part of the game, like immersion, player communication, world pvp... Even worse, they started listening to ppl, and make bad decisions based on that. Hey, not many ppl really liked world bosses in classic! Well, let's completely fckn devaluate them! And all the little decisions like that, little steps, that eventually turned the game into a soulless grinder it is today. Seeing all this, I am honestly surprised they were able to make vanilla wow what it was back in the day at all.

But so many companies never want to have the ethical discussion. Pokémon is my favorite franchise and I think they need to have the balls in a nice way rather than just acting like the company is their own will. When something is seen as it’s own will it’s hard to support it because that goes against human nature and ideals.
