Finding and catching the Giant American Shovelhead Catfish at night

In this video, I start out checking the deeper holes next to shallow water. during the day the catfish will occupy these holes but as the night falls they begin to disburse up along the shallows looking for food. I started in the deep holes but had no luck but I move up towards the shallow water and begin to find catfish, as the night progressed the catfish began to move closer the bank to feed in the shallow water. As I followed the fish to the bank, the bite continued to stay consistent and iI was able to find a very big Flathead catfish to end the night.
I really like this guy's fishing video's, he's one of the best teachers for cat fishing I think on youtube. He explain's very well on how to catch the different kinds of cat fish. So if you wanna learn to catch big ass cat fish like he does go back and watch some of his vid's and his technics.
He really is a great teacher. I love watching him!

@@scottabney7622 I don't know if he ever got to making videos about it, though mentioned he might. However, some basics I can give you as a long time bank angler when hunting catfish, is to find big features. Big points in a lake, big bends in a river, underwater ridges. Fishing maps are your friend in this. They will show you the topography of the bottom of the body of water you want to fish. At least in Kentucky, most publicly accessible water bodies have fairly good maps available online. Look for dropoffs where big fish can come up into shallows to feed. As far as fishing below dams, it's hit or miss. Generally, if people say catfish are found below dams they can be, but this isn't true for all dams.
No demon dragons, no cat bobbers, no gimmicky crap just good ol fashioned catfishing, you are the REAL DEAL!!
I have watched this video more times than I want to admit, and it is still like the first time I saw it, incredible. What a flathead, for most guys, that would be a fish of a life time. Thank you so much for allowing others to share your experience.

Steve, I just nominated you the best of the best catfisherman on all of u tube. You catch every one of them like you want to handle them with care as not to do anything to harm the fish. You are the only one who fights the fish with the kind of care it takes to get the fish to the boat without forcing it to the point that you might injury or even kill it. You even net, land, handle, and release the fish more carefully than any one else on u tube that I have watched. I have watched at least 10-12 other guys that you must know, catch and handle catfish, and none of them act like they even care about the fish, all they want to do is real it in and up from the depths as fast as they can. That isn,t my idea of showing any care for the fish. Even the hook removal is an important aspect of good handling of fish. You do it all like you have respect for the fish. You deserve the gold medal in all those respects. I will be watching more of your videos and less of theirs, so keep them coming. I will be watching.

What an awesome channel... You got it right on big flatheads... I have caught some of the biggest fish I have ever caught right up against the bank at night... 1' from the edge of the bank with a hand sized bluegill never fails me... I'm still trying to perfect catching skip Jack like you do... Hands down everyone has something to learn from you and I'm 60 years old, river fished all my life... What a fish Steve! Looked bigger than 62. I caught a 52.3 lb Flathead a few weeks ago and everyone thought it was smaller! Some look bigger and some look smaller but a toad is a toad! Congrats Steve!!!

Flatheads plum fool me on their weight sometimes. I can pretty well guess blues real close but those flatties will appear bigger and weigh less. Nice one though steve keep up the good work

So I'm talking about catfishing with a guy at work one night and he tells me he hasnt catfished alot, but wants to go. I start to tell him he should get on youtube and watch some videos, there is a guy that I enjoy watching that you can learn alot of things from. Before I can tell him who it is, he blurts out "I watch this guy I think he is called the catfish dude, Steve something" I started laughing and tell him the correct name, and tell him that this is exactly who I was speaking of. We catch the wels catfish over here also in shallow water when it gets dark in the summer. Sometimes we even see their backs. By rocky bottom they mimic a stone by the bank and wait there for their prey. Amazing.

It's a beautiful river. Must better than when I grew up i the 60's with oil slicks and acid dumps from the plants up and down the river. I have seen several large fish kills from from a plating plant. the fine was cheaper than just dumping the shit in the river. the check was made out before the dump. the whole area smelled like dead rotten fish for a week. so sad it was. now we have crappie, bass and every thing else thriving in the Ohio river. God bless wildlife and please keep the regulations in place so we have a beautiful thriving Ohio river.

I Love Your boat , She is a Beaut . One thing though , time and time again , I see you try to net a fish , that is just too far from the net.
I have seen fish lost because the hook got tangled up in the net and pulls out. Take a second to get a couple more feet on that spool before trying to get a net under it .
Don't think that it's a criticism , it's just I've been involved in a lost Flathead and wound up with the hook , hung up in the net. It Sucks !
