'Become comfortable with being invisible'. That's an incredible tip, because I think there are a few reasons why we might be tempted to showcase our editing in obvious ways: The first is what was mentioned in the video, 'showing off' basically. But I think another reason is that we want to feel like we've contributed to the film. If we can edit in some cool transitions, we might feel like we've 'earnt our keep' more than just editing for story, even though the latter probably creates a better film overall. Working in a field where your work is only recognised when you've made a mistake is hard, and editing falls into that category. Having your work goal be to make it look like no one did the work at all is tough. But it's a worthy goal, and the work itself benefits.
Love all the tips you shared! As I self audit myself, I am definitely guilty of some of the things you mentioned which is why im giving myself more freedom to experiment going forward and see the response from viewers

Yes to being an invisible editor! It was a little hard for me to gain confidence into branching out in this career path because of all the flashy edits that weren’t my style. Then I found a client who was pretty much looking for an invisible and not flashy editor so that was a big confidence boost. Getting away from cutting to the beat is a little tricky for me as my introduction to editing was cutting AMV’s back in high school 😆 But yes, allowing shots to breathe is super important.
The most impressive advice here is to not always and only cut to the beat because it’s there. I’m editing an image video for a local barbershop at the moment and I find myself cutting to the beat over and over. I think I’ll have to duplicate my project to mess around a bit with the edit. The audio pop happens because there is a waveform break, where the waveform, at the sample level, goes from one level to another, in that instant. It doesn't have to be loud, just a break in the waveform.
Great point on editing to and not editing to the beat. Paul Hirsch (Empire Strikes Back Editor) had a good take on that as well in his book. Basically, don't do it. Edit slightly before or after the beat which helped give more impact to the shot. Also, editing to every beat etc. can get predicitable really quick to an audience and that can induce boredom if things are too predictable! Great vid Mark! Thanks
Shortcut: You can set default audio transition to one frame, and then highlight all audio clips, then choose "apply default audio transition" and you do not have to do the audio transition on each clip.

Besides duplicating timelines I suggest to resafe a project to new file from time to time (as for Davinci Resolfe backuping a database is also good idea)

I'm a fulltime musician and audio engineer; but my passion for film got stronger and stronger and after shooting some music live-session one-shot videos I finally got a chance to film a music video with a story line. We had to do it all in one day, and location scouting was done by someone else; so everything going a bit chaotic. But keeping a clear head and having the story line and the way I wanted to approach it in my mind all the time , it all went quite nicely. Thank you for your countless tips! It has been a great help. The technical stuff is important and has to be second nature - lots of youtube channels out there for that; but your content shows what makes a film especially good.
Oh and by the way: Good tip with the audio editing. Lots of people seem to forget about that. Tech background: If you don't fade in or fade out, the audio track will jump from zero point to the point of the recorded audio in a straight vertical line, which results in a burst of lots of overtones - a quite nasty sound. Think of it as a short overtone-rich square wave form in comparison to a smooth sine wave form with no overtones at all.
2:30 It took me years to stop duplicating sequences in FCP. It renders the "Used media" tag inoperable. Snapshot is the equivalent in FCP. Same rationale, done differently.

03:14 - When the waveform cuts off at a PCM sample point above or below unity (0) it will produce a click or pop; the fade places allows the sample points at the end of the clip to finish at unity (0); I'm curious in DAW (Digital audio workstations) we can set (Auto fades) for when we cut or edit regions of Audio; is this something do-able in final cut?
