  • A peaceful waterside field beside the oldest bridge over the higher reaches of the River Thames in Oxfordshire poses the perfect setting for a Time Team assault. Their mission? To uncover what looks like the remains of a large medieval castle buried under the grass.

      Time Team members and the producer have been buying up and posting the episodes under their own site in HD so people can watch them freely and in order on either site. It's nice to have them labelled by season so you can watch not only the changing of time with the experts and others involved but also how archaeological information and methods have changed over the two decades it aired.
      th-cam.com/channels/vmEISc6e4tLwn8TyS14ncw.html
      They have even began taking donations to do other digs with the added benefit of more time to dig and accurately convey information about the site. So far they have funding for two digs and have one ready to go soon.

    Radcot is briefly mentioned in Charles Spencer's "White Ship." It simply states that Radcot was a supporter of Matilda. Matilda, however, had holed up in Oxford Castle. They were facing eminent surrender to Stephen's forces and Matilda escaped with the help of 3-4 of her most loyal knights who lowered down the side of the castle wrapped in a white bedsheet, good camouflage as it was near Christmas.

      Many of those decisions were made by the Producers as a cost cutting measure. In the first few shows, they didn't even dig. It cost a lot of money to dig with excavators and then return everything to the pristine condition it was in before you started.

      If I was the producer I would have sacked him too. He relies too heavily on old maps and plans. As an architect things very rarely get built per plans and to rely on a 12th century plan without a scale or any reliable survey technique is foolish at best but Stewart digs in his heals and isn’t flexible to allow other theories. He’s wrong 80% of the time and has the team always going down rabbit holes. He may be a nice guy but he doesn’t appear to be very professional. I just fast forward past his parts. Oh, and he never ever helps dig. All of the others, pregnant women and even pottery specialist, pitch in but Stewart never does. In the 200 or so episodes he is never filmed picking up a trowel or shovel.

      @@RonHei dúh that's the whole idea, to have different perspectives. And he doesn't dig, because he is not trained in that . He could do some rough shoveling, but that's not needed they have enough manpower (volunteers) for that. He also is not wrong 80% of the time, I have binged watched a lot of episodes in the past weeks because of illness and I would say in about 50% of the cases he brings something useful to the project.

    Many thanks Reijer. Watching these videos has become addictive for me. For me, a series like this would have been wonderful 60 years ago when I was struggling through European History 101 courses. Brings events to life instead of merely memorizing dates and maps, then forgetting them completely after the exams were over!

    • @deetsy4jesus
      @deetsy4jesus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Celto Loco I don't mean to be contrary... Some people learn by watching. I actually learn more by reading the information. Yes, these videos have helped bring things to 'life' more than just reading it. However, for me, I don't think this would have meant as much to me without having read all of the background details prior to watching. I have spent the last 8 years being bedridden because of my disabilities. All I've basically done is read nonfiction books about almost every period in history. I have read, on average, 3-6 books per week during that time. That is excluding the past 2 months or so, because all I've done is watch the first 15 seasons of TT. LOL BTW, thanks for the link, I intend to check that out as well!

    • @KYIRISH1
      @KYIRISH1 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Good thoughts for you Donna. My point above is that trying to cram a lot of events and dates into my mind so I could pass a required course was not really learning. For me anyway. Boring! Of course I was not a history major either, European History was just another of the courses required in Freshman Year of Studies.

    • @deetsy4jesus
      @deetsy4jesus 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      KYIRISH1 I agree with you about the memorizing dates etc. Some of the methods used to teach history are absolutely useless! In fact, some of the things that are taught in today's public schools are downright frightening! One of the many reasons that I homeschooled my children. Now they are all well on their way to being productive members of society with valuable college degrees to boot! I'm so glad I decided to make the sacrifice for them. It wasn't easy, but it was worth every minute!

      @KYIRISH1: I couldn't agree with you more! When I studied European History in school, I hated just memorizing dates and names of historical places. Remembered them until I passed the next test and then forgot them. Now, I am in my late 60s and love history programs. My hat today is off to Mick when Sir Anthony (Tony) was teasing him about failing to document something pertaining to this dig and he admitted that when he was young, he missed it. Hope Mick is enjoying his retirement.

    *"Time Team's" greatest energies of success as a Show were:*
    ▪ Folks largely enjoy Human History Archaeology,
    ▪ The show followed a consistent rhythm of procedure and maintained a high energy (that beat was set by Tony"s Narration and his high energy + Film & Tech Production Excellence)
    ▪ *They established a "Real Team of Personalities",* particularly:
    Tony, Mick, Phil, John, Stewart, Matt, Bridgette, Victor, (the Digger Driver, 8an Barclay) (Carenza earlier), that improved with the addition of H(elen, Rakshar, and Johnathon), and although Johnathon wasn't on as many of the Shows, *these 3 were clearly perfect choices to it's Highest Perfection* and enduring potential, beyond the ending of the Series.
    When one has the public info on the details of season that resulted in its ending, it raises the Q: *"What the hell was the "Producer thinking?"*
    It is a "given" in TV Series that: *One avoids making "replacements" to an already established and $uccessful cast.*
    ...and even w/o knowing this rule of thumb, any regular viewer would have in mind to ask:
    "Why would the Producer make such an (unintelligent) decision?"
    ... Hard to not get personal, (and I don't intend to be judging nor rude), its hard to avoid judging, but ya have to just think:
    *"Was there was an overwhelming degree is stupidity involved here!?!"*
    ...and I hope that individual regains their mind.
    *Two of the focal people, both extremely qualified and extremely well liked by the Viewer base, Helen and Stewart, and then the decision causing one of the 3 Key Figures (Tony, Mick, Phil) Mick, in such diress that he had to object and leave the Show.*
    Even if it had been at the 10 year mark, the decision would have caused a way too early end.
    Note: this is based strictly on the info as reported in Media and my having had a related degree and experience in the Business of: Public Relations/Marketing/Advertising, Journal8sm, Stage and TV/Entertainment, Ownership, Production, and Management.
    I'm also baffeled why they didn't make the Show available in the USA Market, they would have seen, Conservatively, a minimum of 3 times added Profits.
    Helen and Stewart were such strong values to the Show. I am consciously avoiding making comments regarding the replacement subject because, although it was so obviously not a wise choice, it is unfair to judge individuals whom otherwise could have possibly been alternatives.
    *(Truly a situation that had no reason to have ever been.)*
    Focus on the Positive:
    Thank goodness there's been a generous sharing of this Show-series, to have the vast positive enjoyment of focus, for the Public and all involved.
    Eternal Positive Energies thoughts and blessings for Mick Aston, Ian Barclay, and Artist, Victor Anbrus.
    What fabulous Successes and with Continued Enjoyment.
    Truly appreciating all the "Work-n-Digginh". 💯

    Tony to Kids: "READY?"
    Kids: "YEAH!!!".
    Almost a Monty Python and Holy Grail moment where the historian is explaining the background for the scene and he gets cut down.

      Bottom lands, excuse the french Jesus Chrsit man how somebody can manipulate a comment of thank you socall the cops, do what ever you think you need to do! Im a retired PIG you like that, I have no idea how You know, how all this worlks , i was a homicide detective, so if you have a beef dont screw with me, if you have nothing nice to say dont say anything God in all the years this is the first time I was slapped for just saying thank you! Im almost hoping my cancer kills me so i can come back and see you cast the first stone, You are the very fist person i have ever read saying something like this, I am 60 , a rocker, Joanie Larkins childhood friend, and dont know much about all the technicalities of the internet. So if I idie I wanna come back and sit next to you to see what perfect really is! You know they give my meds that give me full menopause and PMS to slow the cancer, would you do me a favor and not comment on my thank yous ever ever again. Im trying to have my last days not fencing with people like you! God I wanna come back and just be your companion for eternity s I can learn how not to be so stupid on the internet Please show me how! Why am I not seeing four hundred comments saying whoever posted this is a thief or whatever, If you take a picture off pinterest , its not yours, you must have stolen it, I have put this documentary on my likes so I must have stolen it too. I have been a diplomat all my life byt you oissed me off I said thank you Father God forgive me, but if you have irreparable proof that this was wrong, how do you know the person who posted even knew they did something wrong. You need intent and knowledge , when you prove that against a person then report them but all I am going to say is Merry Christmas! Now screw me with that now too of how offensive I am by saying it! Maybe I'll just write a song and record it, and say what i please, just to say it. If it offends, and i have no proof beyond a shadow of a doubt,I'll just saY It anyway because I can hide behind a keyboard and not face the person i just insulted face to face! I really hate it when people who can't just keep their negativity to themselves to themselves. If you have a beef then address it , dont F with a guy who said thank you You seem like a bigger moron thaan me right now! If you have proof this person knew it was theft then tell somebody I didn't know that and if so then everybody posting on the internet has been a thief, somehow, unless it all says public domain, Instead of thank you should i close out to everybody and say screw you! You prove that person is a thief and if you can't, then apologize to them! I had a person write how he thought a friend of mine looked like a truck ran over her face then had the stupidity to say I wasn't trying to hurt her feelings. She is a celebrity that ha given her life to entertainment then some dumbass throws that in. I even said when i next see her, anything else you want me to pass on to her form you! I didnt appreciate your cheap shot to me, as simple as what we both said as that was degrading, insulting and humiliating. I said to the guy, yeah you were trying to insult her and her family and friends see this. yeah so please apologize if you didn't mean it but still hurt her. her family sees it she sees it and her friends see it He could not apologize. Apologize to me for making jest at my ignorance. You won't do that either! He without sin fire the first stone! I have no idea, so why dont you write a thesis now so i can understand exactly what this person did and if this person hd no intent nor knowledge of wrong doing it is not theft until that is proven. God you pissed me off! Good will to men, the season to be jolly and to give and to think of others, so please write down everything so i can understand the who what where how why and when of it! Thank you , from the dumbass that has no clue ME obviously

Maybe your laugh out loud wont be so loud if he or she sues you for written liable.I think I am dying and you laugh at me, I pray for you because somebody else is seeing this too. Ihope you feel like the cocok of the walk Alot of people will think i am long winded which i am, but they will really think something very different of you! Guarantee it!

      @@joaniejett7189 The comments that you are commenting on have been removed. And, I'm glad they have. Apparently, the bozo that wrote the comments didn't mind watching the so-called "stolen" videos he/she was bitching about. I applaud your comeback to what must have been a disgusting comment. And then, later, to laugh at your illness is beyond rude.
      It's amazing what people will say to others on the internet that they would never say to a person's face because if it was said to the person's face, the person's fist might come out to play with the rude person's face. The internet has been a big boon for research and entertainment, but at the same time, it has been the downfall of morals and good behavior. I'm 56 years old and when I was growing up I was taught to be polite to everybody. I'm still polite to everybody I meet. I get some really strange looks from people because of that.
      I'm sorry to hear about the cancer. I hope and pray that you are and will continue to get better. BTW, you're not the only long-winded person. I get mine natually from my mother's side of the family.

    If you promise not to alter the basic structure or change whatever is left, from an archeological standpoint, you can purchase a towerhouse and live in it. It must be quite a architectural problem to make it livable without changing whatever ruin is there.

I've never had a problem understanding these guys, but that sentence reminds me of a boy I met on a cruise to the Bahamas when we were both about twelve years old, in '92. He was from Liverpool and we became fast friends, running all over the ship, playing basketball on deck at night, accessing off limits areas below deck, being boys. But about half the time he said something to me I had to ask him to repeat it because it sounded to me like, " Well...tssumm robostle ballastle jyugg-they, native upon the Oxfordshire buggy-n-chibarress.". I was able to understand him pretty normally by the time we had to part ways, of course.

      Its a shame as castles look so pretty. They could have at least left a few nice ruined bits for us to look at, like they did at other castles and abbeys, which are good for the economy and days out with the kids. Too many historical people were selfish and simply gave no thought for the future. Punchline... Good job nearly all humans today are not so short sighted and make sacrifices to preserve things of great importance. Arrfff arrfff.
