  • In this video I show a step by step process of how to diagnose and fix the issue of windscreen washer jets not working on a BMW 318d, I am using a BMW in this video but the method I use to find and fix the problem is pretty much the same across most Makes and Models of vehicles.
    If you have a pump making noise you go down the easy road of clearing out a blockage and it can be as simple as a minute job on one of these if that is your only issue.
    If I helped ya out and you would like to buy me a drink ko-fi.com/gerardburke

    Great, thanks. I was at the petrol station with my hood up lying face down over the engine so I could reach the little jets with my mouth to give it a good blow to clear the blockage, and when I got out of the engine bay there were a bunch of people laughing at me.
    They should really make those things longer and easier to reach

    I was able to hear the motor working on my car but there was hardly any water coming through the nozzles. I blew the pipe through the washer bottle and sucked all the water from the washer bottle with a pump. Amount of dirt came from the bottle was unbelievable. Filled the bottle with fresh water and repeated the process until the sucked water from the washer bottle looked clean. Thanks a lot for the video as it saved me money and time.

    Brilliant diagnosis Gerard 👍 most garages would have just fired parts at the problem and end up costing the customer more. I replaced the washer pump a few years ago on my then 96 Celica and it cost 70 Euro from Toyota for the part their not cheap. That's why I always tell people not to use their washer jets in extreme cold weather, i'v seen people burn out pump motors, I done it myself☺

    • @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage
      @GerardBurkeBurkesGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ya I have seen that a good few times too, or if the jets/pipes are blocked with dirt and they keep trying to use the pump. If it doesn't come through fast leave it alone :0
      The 09 onwards Partner's and Berlingo are fused so saves the pump from burn out, replaced a good few fuses on those last winter.

    Great info! For me the pipe/pump was getting clogged from dirty wiper fluid. Compressed air back down the pipe cleared it for a few days but then it would come back. To fix it I drained it with a tube, filled with tap water, drained again (repeat a few more times) then it was good :)

    Thanks for the video it was a great help today fixing my mates 5 series, the motor was working but nothing came out, I slid out the motor and pulled out the rubber bung underneath which had a blocked plastic filter attached to it, I cleaned this and they worked, also the rigid white plastic filler hose was leaking slightly where it enters the bottle so I warned the plastic lugs and removed it to replace the oring, no more leaks👍

    Thank you for the guide, appreciate it.
    Just done mine on my M140i.
    It was slightly different but not too much.
    The three push in connectors on the lip of the arch were a pain. I couldn't re-use mine and had to buy a huge assorted pack just to replace three.
    Apart from that, it wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, so I saved a good £150 garage bill and I knew it had been done properly.

    Gerard, on a friend's 520d there is a small hose taped to part of the wiring loom on the pass.wing and which is detached itself and I can suck the washer fluid from the bottle directly through it. This little hose does not seem attached or have broken off from anything that I can see in a quick check. Is this hose attached to the bottle for air purposes or what ? His wash/wipe isnt working but I can hear the motor.

    Good video Gerard.
    Did you clean the filter that is inside the water bottle before fitting new motor?
    Either I miss it or you did not mention it.
    The filter is prone to blockage due to bacteria growth inside the bottle
    When this happens you will hear the motor work but there will be no pressure build up from motor.

    • @RS-hn7qs
      @RS-hn7qs 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Very true, if u can hear the motor turning but no water coming to the windscreen then the filter is blocked, it's a simple fix , take the filter off and run the garden hose through it, alternatively just put warm water in ur bottle and run it through the jets , PS,never put dish washing liquid in ur water bottle that's what causes the problem, thanks Richard.

    Just went out to fix mine, twice this has happened on my BMW. Originally had to get this done by a garage, cost me about £60 it was on the MOT day would you believe and so they said they would fix and then MOT it. So I thought, go ahead didnt have time to go fix it myself. However, if you have the tools, this looks like a simple job. However yes, it happened again, thankfully this time the rubbers that clip into the hose parts under the bonnet came off, not sure how but to those with this issue, check there first they may just need clipping back on. Otherwise give the pipe a blow with your mouth.
