Probably my favourite character from Greek mythology. The fact that Zeus, maybe the bravest and mightiest being in Greek cosmology was afraid of her, the Night, is such a fascinating and relatable idea.
@benjaminacuna8013 Zeus was indeed brave. He stayed and fought while all the others fled to Egypt. Tyrant doesn't = Evil, bad or detestable. A good father is a tyrant. Save your propagandized prenoticions for yourself.
I very much enjoy your videos about Greek mythology. I am Greek and often when we are taught those stories in school we do not pay attention because they are usually forced upon us to learn and write a test later. I find those myths very fascinating because we use words and expressions directly from those myths. Νυξ (νύχτα) is the same word we use for night ,today. Ημέρα is the word for day. The same goes for Thanatos ,ades etc. Fascinating. Thank you for your videos.
As you say, the fact it isn't "passed down" in a way that conveys the awe and fascinating aspects of it, strips all of the wonder and potential to spark more investigation.
Thank You, Cinizia, our Lady of the Library 🤗 I adore listening to you tell these stories, whilst also critiquing the flaws in the various interpretations ⭐️
She wasn’t a minor character. The reason much isn’t written about her is because she’s so primordial the writer assumed the reader already knew her qualities.
It might have been that Nyx was so feared that few wanted to speak of her in case they made her mad or brought the attention of her loyal children. Great video as always. I do have an idea for you. A video on the different flood myths might be interesting.
Girl, you are such a good storyteller. Even the simple things like your hand gestures emphasizing the significance of your words have me hooked! I hope you find great happiness in doing this because I am grateful to be your audience 🙏🏻
Awesome. It is interesting how Aphrodite Ourania in Egypt was syncretized with Nut who in turn was syncretized with Nyx The gods were a lot less fixed & more loosey goosey (the loose goose being an emblem of Amun)
Look at Hinduism today to see how the ancients interacted with ideas of their gods. The fact that we think one god has to be a fixed idea of itself throughout time and space is only due to how Christianity impacted our collective psychology. We think Aphrodite was a unique discrete goddess the same way Jesus is a unique and discrete god.
@@yoeyyoey8937 Though hinduisms have had like centuries of theology & movemengs & evolution; precisely the discrepancy between say orphic & eleusinian & puthagorean & hessiodic practices show that ancient religion was anything but monolithic
I know this might be a little out of nowhere but i would LOVE to hear your take on Hildegard of Bingens works I think youd find her a fascinating and wild ride.
I believe those who have looked up at the night sky and felt love understand the importance of giving night a deity. The ancient civilizations had one for seemingly everything. Love the additional information, I'm just sad for the black furred animals sacrificed. I love the night(lifelong nightowl). I also love my kitties and pups, they all have beautiful black fur. I also enjoy charting and tracking the stars and moon, usually with my fur babies at my side.
To me there is something really creepy about Ovid's version of Erysichthon's tale. Both the punishment and the way it plays out is deeply unsettling. I am not smart enough to understand the "deeper" meaning or whatever metaphor it is meant to be (I get it on a superficial level of course), but I always felt there is some... really weird, hidden meaning about it, not just about greed, about something else. Brrr.
From my point of view, “Chaos” or “the abyss” or “emptiness” are negatively polarized conceptualizations of a primordial reality that simultaneously transcends and encompasses all polarities. That could also be positively conceptualized as “the One” or “the Monad” or “Brahman,” given the 1/0 binary polarization inherent in human language. Post-Zoroastrian monotheisms that only revere one masculine/light deity are imbalanced in ways that promote sexism and other issues, in my opinion.
I've taken a break from all social media for about a month ( i do from time to time). Once back, here is one if the 1st places I look. So excited to watch what I've missed!!! As always, ty Cinzia for all your hard work & for just being you!!! 🙏❤️😁

Now Im also diagnosed with ADHD and on medication for dementia. The books mostly stay on the shelves now. Videos are so helpful in my quest for continuing knowlede. Thank you so very much. I really appreciate it.
Well, clearly, it's because the night belongs to lovers! Also, I wonder if a bit of the Nyx v Zeus drama is a hint of the earlier Hemera/Nyx dynamic in a more Olympian context? Zeus is also the sky of the day, and as such would also be incapable of being in the same place. Like Demeter can't be in the same place as Starvation.
This was an amazing dive into a fascinating character (a perhaps a very important archetype?), it's a pity that there isn't a lot of writing on her, but then again mythology is made up of palimpsests, and it's society that is left with the task of filling in the gaps, so to speak. I don't know if you're familiar with Supergiant's HADES, but the portrayal of Nyx in that game is absolutely stellar. Cheers!
