I went to fill up my bird feeder this spring, and growing under it was several germinated black oil sunflower seeds. I decided to plant some along my fence line, and try to grow a couple indoors (temporarily). I'll definitely try using compost for the fence line ones if they look like they need it, but I'm in pretty good fertile soil near the Kansas River . Thanks for the information, I'll keep it in mind.
Yeah... those Fibonacci numbers are quite interesting!!! Under the bird feeder... that's where most people find these growing. I wish you the very best of luck, growing these... and PLEASE... let me know how your journey goes!
This was very helpful and informative. Thank you. I've just planted my black oil sunflower seeds along the fence line. The seeds are for my chickens. Now I know what to watch for and how to harvest.
Oh! lol! They're called "killer flowers". Sunflowers are just about the most amazing flowers, ever! Have you ever noticed a bare patch of ground under a bird feeder? The sunflower seeds are killing the grass. Every part of a sunflower is toxic, including the seeds. Thanks for watching the video.
@@BestBudsGardening (that sound you heard is me gasping with horror...) are you saying they're toxic to ALL plants or all type of crops? Like are my perennials doomed that I planted these seeds around? This is the first I've heard of this and my mind is racing lol I'm guessing they 'pollute ' the soil with toxin in their root? and for how long does it last? Oh my....
Well... you saw in the video what happened to the poor beans. I think people recommend that, because the sunflowers provide a "pole" for the beans to climb. It takes a couple of months for the effects to show up... so, maybe they get great beans for awhile, and then attribute the rapid decline in production to something besides the sunflower... I mean... who would ever think?
Didn’t know about the toxicity to plants, I heard to companion plant pole beans to grow up them. Ugh, I thought that would be really neat to have a natural ‘pole’
@@izwanfade6298 Yes. When they're done... they're done. But, they take 120 days to grow, so you might have to wait until the following year to plant more.

So I’ve been growing mine for about a month almost 2 months, and the sunflower has gotten about a foot tall and looks like it is already making a head but it’s in the earliest stages, what’s weird is that it doesn’t seem tall enough or that its leaves are only ~3 inchs long and ~1.5 inches wide, way smaller than what it looks like in this video. It could be that it is stunted, it was growing under my bird feeder. I’m growing 3 more right now that are about to poke out of the soil. Besides the sunflowers small size it looks really healthy, but it only has leaves near the top unlike yours with the large juicy leaves all around it’s thick stem. Maybe it is some weird small variety. (It is definitely a sunflower though because the bird seed doesn’t have any other seeds. And my plant identification app has always told me it’s a sunflower, and it has a head.
Black Oil Sunflower seeds are going to be a bit of a "mix" of different types of sunflowers. They are hybrids, and usually, 2nd generation hybrids, so a lot going on in the gene pool, there. It can be a total surprise as to what yours grow up to look like, sometimes. Yours almost sounds like some type of "dwarf" variety got its genes in there, someplace! I'm growing dwarf sunflowers this year. Send me photos at jchurchgirl@gmail.com. I'd bet my mom that you have a dwarf variety growing. And, those are so much fun! They mature at about 85 days.

I’m glad I watched this before they grew because I didn’t know Sunflower was toxic to garden vegetables.

Totally interesting. Didn’t know sunflowers are toxic to other plants. Will have to rearrange a few plants in the garden. 😊
The effects don't show up for a couple of months.

You are so welcome!
Thanks for the final tip about planting too close to anything else you grow. Good video 🍄🌈😃🤙

Learned something new. I did not know sunflowers are allelopathic. Though I have seen some people recommend planting beans with them.

Thanks so much.this videos is very helpful
I love your voice.
Thank you.
Perfect instruction...
Thank you.
Do you have to pre germ the seeds or just direct sow?
You can direct sow. I like to pre germ so I know the seeds are viable.
How do I store the seeds? And what is the earliest in the following year that I can start growing them again? I started june this year
Store the seeds in a cool, dry location. You can plant them next year when night time temperatures are consistently above 65 degrees.
@@BestBudsGardening Awesome!! Thanks ao much for the advise!!
I bought a bag to deal with chipmunks. The pail had wet seeds left in it. 4 days they are sprouting. What to do its almost fall here.
There's not a lot you can do, this time of year. There's no time to grow them before winter.

Maybe try corn for a pole.
Will the bloom grows back after we cut it or we need to plant a new one ? Very informative video for someone who just started gardening like me 😄
The blooms will not grow back. You will need to plant a new one next year..
@@BestBudsGardening so if the blooms dried out, we have to rip off the whole plant and grow a new one ?

How long after sunflower will soil be safe for other seeds?
After a season of rain or snow, the toxins should be washed away.

That looks like a Mongolian giant sunflower
They are toxic to other plants? Many people on here grow things below them or even let vines grow on them.
Sunflowers are allelopathic. Some plants might be able to hold out longer than others, but eventually...
better pull mine up then because there next to my cherry tomatoes .
