Best Buds Gardening is a TH-cam series dedicated to my Mom, who passed away in 2016. She and I were "gardening buddies." Everything I learned about gardening, I learned from my Mom. Now, I want to teach others everything she taught me. Join me for weekly gardening "how to" videos. I hope we can become gardening buddies.

For whatever reason, I was about to click out of your video near the beginning. But, I am so glad that I did not. You're an excellent instructor and you made an excellent tutorial. Thank you. I learned a lot.
Random vine started growing from my compost heap and now I have about 10 baby butternut pumpkin (Aussie here). Your video has been very helpful, thank you.
Thank you for your video. Is there an ideal time of the year to grow butternut?
Start them in the spring when day time temps are 70 to 75 degrees.
hi i think i am having the same issue blossom rot and not having pumpkins producing on my vine i have 1 left of a female flower that has a bulge underneath and i slip a piece of cardboard but i didn't know how big the cardboard needs to be though . plus does the pumpkin need lots of water to still grow, ? how do you know if your watering to little or too much ? and thank you for the video
Cardboard needs to be big enough for the pumpkin. Keep the soil damp.
Thank you I will try that next year, thank you very much for the tip.😊
Hi, thank you so much, for the information. Many Blessings.
You are so welcome
I just found your channel and I’m loving all your videos! They’re short and sync and they get right to the point. I love all the visuals and step my step instructions you provide - plus all the little extra tips and facts you provide about the plant ! Your videos help me quickly get started with my gardening. ❤ 🪴
Yay! Thank you!
Thank you for your helpful advice!!!
Glad it was helpful!
I just plant them straight into ground. Way over engineered here.
Thank you.
You CAN grow peanuts from grocery store. Just buy them unsalted or roasted.
Very true.
Don’t let the sweet gardener lady fool ya, she’s got swag! 😊
Wonderful ❤
I guess mine stopped growing, its about the size of a movie pickle, and is already light tan 😢
Weird.
Do you hang them up or let them on the ground?
If the ground is damp, you'll want to place something under them so they don't rot.
Can you grow them in clay soil?
I've never tried. Probably not.
I use seed raising mix Put them in little pots.
I planted one peanut at the end of my 4x8 raised bed back in June after i harvested my spring crop and was planting my summer crop. I found the peanut in my yard, coutesy of the neighborhood peanut delivery squirrel who's always leaving peanuts everywhere. Thought I'd throw it in to see what it does. That one single peanut has grown to take over half of my raised bed. Probably over 250 pegs or more by a rough count and rough multiplication. It's continually growing and putting out new flowers.
Awesome!
Is it possible to get some seeds???
I don't sell seeds, sorry. I've thought about it, but just don't have the time at the moment. Perhaps in the future.
Soooo, back in early July, I found a seed in the piece of honeydew I happened to be eating, and for fun, I decided to try and sprout it, using the paper towel and ziplock method I learned in elementary school. I wasn't really expecting it to sprout or survive, I just thought it would be fun. Well, he sprouted, and is now currently in medium sized plastic pot, and is nearly half a foot tall, has several big, beautiful leaves, some of which have begun to curl, a possible blossom, and has started to lie horizontally. However, it's now fall, and I know melons are summer plants, so I'm worried the upcoming colder weather is gonna kill him. Any advice or tips?? 😅
Well, it won't make it outside. July is way too late to start a honeydew plant from seed. Have you thought about bringing it indoors and using a grow light?
@BestBudsGardening oh he's already indoors! I've been growing him in the greenhouse window above my kitchen sink! However a growlight will probably be a good idea come the cold weather. (Right now, where I'm at, the weather is still nice and hot despite being September, but I'm not sure how long it will last 🥲.)
Hi, Buddy, I just subscribed. 8/28/24 and doing the coffee can method today.. I hope it's not too late in zone 9b. Thank you very, very much.
The back of your seed package might tell you when to plant in 9b. Some packets have that information and some don't.
Oh thank you for this. When my female blossoms went yellow & start falling off, I thought there was something wrong with the plant & I took it out.
Oh no!
I bought one at the Farmer's market and opened it up and it was not ripe. I collected the seeds but need to know if they will still germinate. They aren't black like yours but instead a sort of tan/gray color.
If it wasn't ripe, the seeds probably won't be viable.
Very informative 👍
Glad you liked it
It's August and I'm still getting only male flowers. :(
It might just simply be too hot.
So thank you for this video. I have just plucked the seeds from a store bought cantaloupe. There are many differences in the Google searches I've conducted which is how I found you! My question i love in a ski resort area so we have more winter than summer. Following the one rule all have said which is to plant 3 to 4 weeks before the last area frost. Because our last frost is mid July I won't have the time to grow. I am going to try to grow cantaloupe from my home using the summer sun in summer months and warm locations away from cooling areas. I'll be using both sunlight and grow light. My question is if I opt to do my plan, can I plant it now? August 10th 2024 with outdoor temps getting a high of about 97 to 100 f and a low of 60's? Or is it imperative that I wait until next year and hope for early spring? Also as for the seeds some people say I have to clean, rinse, thoroughly dry, and even freez if they're from store bought cantaloupe. Also I also was told if the seeds float they're bad while those that sink are goo to plant. All of them are floating. Is this true too?
Great idea thank you 😊
100 degrees is a little too hot for the blossoms to turn into fruit. If you set up a little growing area inside, with a grow light... plant away! You need to clean and rinse, but only have to thoroughly dry if planning to store the seeds. If they float... they're not good. Only the ones that sink are good. The ones that float are empty inside.
Is zone 6 much different than zone 5 for growing luffa, or does the rule of thumb pretty much still apply when trying to germinate and grow luffa for my zone, or should I tweak it somehow to get a better jump on germinating and attempting to grow it in my location in Iowa?
It's not THAT much different between the zones. You won't really be able to get a "head start." If it's too cool, they'll stop growing. You can try the soda bottle trick on cooler nights. Just give it a try and see what happens. Let me know how it works out.
Ive heard that the pumpkin can also choose to not let some blossoms grow if it has too many pollinated flowers on it. It probably sends out a bunch of females and expects a fraction of them to get pollinated. Also i think a damaged stigma can do the same thing because I broke a part of the stigma one time while pollinating it and the flower fell off. (This is all speculation)
Plants are actually pretty smart... so, you are right.

thanks a lot for sharing
Good info!
I never knew and now I can do a dew. Thank you for the great info.
Had a lot of success growing these this year, more than we can eat! However, I thought this variety of bean is "stringless", it is not. Still need to "de-string them" :-[
I never have.
My God what a good video thank you I feel so much better ❤
What an annoying voice and instructions. TALK as if we're adults and not kindergarten PLEASE
Thank you for being so informative and with examples!!!!! Truly helpful. I have three pumpkin vines growing close to each other. I only have a small space. Should I leave them together or separate and will they be harmed if kept together? Thank you again.😊😊😊😊❤❤❤
Do you plan on growing more carnivorous like byblis (rainbow plant), drosera(sundews), or nepenthes or sarracenia ( pitcherplants)
I love all of those. I've had a sundew before. I'm a little afraid of pitcher plants getting bees.
New subscriber here! Just planted my first butter squash today!
Let me know how it goes!
I REALLLLLLLY NEEDED this video! Thank you VERY MUCH!!!! I was wondering why my tiny little butternut squashes would turn yellow, then fall off. This video is truly insightful!!!
I’m growing my first tomatillo plants! This information was very helpful, thank you! 😊
If you have really bountiful amounts of butternut squash and multiple vines, then I strongly advise trying to cook some green ones. You’ll be amazed how a good they taste
good information
My first two squash came up a d died off i thought something was wrong but i tell my self they could be practice fruit
Either that or too hot.
🙏
This video has provided me encouragement to save seeds and to plant. I love details. You have provided important ones. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
What if you don't have 70-80 degree days because you are near your first frost date?
Then it probably won't work out like you expect. You might get some very small ones, though. Always worth a try.
Your potatoes were wonderful and your information was wonderful too thank you
Nice. How big of a pot and (trellis) would I need for four of these bean plants? I just picked up some seedlings today, but didn't realise how vigorous these are!
I'd say at least 6 feet. I've never tried to grow them in a container. Probably 5 gallons per plant.
This is my first year growing tomatillos! I am very excited. I grew them from seeds! Thanks for the video
How do you clean them and salt them
I try to not provide cooking information. lol.
👍 very informative. Subbed also
Wonderful thank you so much
