This painting is one of my favourites and it really came alive when you added all the soft oranges. The weather is wet, wild and grey here in England so painting outdoors is delayed until the sun refinds us. However I hope I can produce something a quarter as good as this on my next attempt at plein air. Please keep sharing videos when you get a chance, they are really inspiring.
Wow! I really like the way you work. Put it down and go for it. A brief tale. I happen to be in Japan on a animation project and on my time off, the head background artist there would get together and paint or sketch in the countryside, I thought. I took my paints, however, they all showed up with nothing, not even a pencil or pad. They sat there staring at the landscape for at least one hour. They did the same thing again. I asked them when we returned the third time, when were they going to start painting? They said they had the very first day we went out. I was a bit confused. Later, they honored me with dinner one night and there in their studio were the incredible scenes we went out to paint. I was told by the head artist his group never painted on location but remembered what was before them, went home, and sketched it out there. This way they were not distracted by detail, however, they remembered the shapes, forms, and darks and lights, plus where the sun was during the day. On the wall were the most unbelievable black and white sketches called "Notan". Once they made these sketches of the darks and lights and the forms were in place, the painting started. Yes, some of them went back to view the area we took in but, the bold shapes and color were the most important thing. It was mind blowing work with little detail. I just wanted to share this with you for sharing with all of us. Thank you, Phil Mendez
As a fellow Plein Air painter, I love what you're doing! I sat and watched a crap ton of your videos while waiting out the ice day here in WA state. I'm also an American "Russian" painter. ;) Keep it up. You're very inspiring!
Turner I just found your channel and enjoyed your painting demo. I need to go back to the beginning of the week and watch the rest! Thanks again for your generosity.
Its been a pleasure to watch your process. Thank you for your generosity of time and talent. Its oddly comforting seeing other artists critique their own work in such a similar way as myself. Thank you
Yay! You pulled it off. I was a little worried halfway through but you made it evoke a much sunnier day creating more value contrast and bringing in great warm and cool highlights
These paint sessions are great! Keep it up as much as you can Turner. Teaching people how to paint correctly, with no fear or ego, is the best gift for a beginning artist. Also they are very calming and tranquil, which we all need a bit of right now. Cheers Man
I've thoroughly enjoyed watching the growth of this painting, especially your reflective mentees about your process. Your honesty about your perceived struggles with decision making is definitely relatable.
You do nice work. I like the all over approach with spontaneous strokes. As you find what works over time you will get even better while holding on to the spontaneity. I really enjoy your videos. Joyce
Thank you so much! It has been a long week, spent my free time sewing masks for family, looking forward to painting this weekend . I have so enjoyed watching your videos! You are a wonderful teacher!
This work is going to bring me back toward objective plienair approach to painting. I love the way he describes his colors.his composition .etc thank you.
Enjoyed the week of videos a lot and this was the best yet. Watching you struggle and your thought processes behind getting to where you wanted to be under changing conditions was fascinating.

Thank you so much! It’s great to know people are enjoying these. I have some folks asking about online courses, so it’s something I’m considering. And hopefully a workshop in San Antonio this coming Fall.
What a beautiful scene you have there! It is lovely to watch how you build up your painting. Very informative and useful! Best wishes..David in the UK.
I love your impresionist tecnica. An awesome landscape in mountiains. Congratulations. My sincerely felicitaciones. Till your next video. Bay Turner. ¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡¡ WOW ¡¡¡¡
Hello Turner, I’m a new comer to your posts, I enjoyed what you did and how you did it. What I do appreciate, and you have that sense as well, but the understanding of warm and cool colours that the established artist display so well in their work. You use brushes solely I note, but it appears that you lavish the paint on your panel with pure abundance as though it be by palette knife. I like very much the effect. Thank you for sharing Frits from down under, in case you were wondering where I am located.
At times the painting had a different feel. But I had the feeling you were chasing the light. Each version was great, but the light changed and you repainted the shadows and light areas. I loved each version.
EXCELLENT DEMONSTRATIONS. . THEY ARE VERY USEFUL FOR THE AMATEUR ARTISTS AND STUDENTS. PLEASE KERP UP YOUR DEMOS WHICH ARE GUIDING ASPIRING ARTISTS.. GOD BLESS YOU..
I come here for the deluge of paint pushed from the tubes in the beginning. I can’t help myself. I also really dig painters like this…moves a lot of product about the canvas with total exploration and zero fear crossing lines. Goodly stuff Painter guy!!
I could feel your pressure on this one, and maybe it was the size of the canvas. I used to start out with a 16x20 canvas when I did plein air painting but I was always chasing the light and could never finish a painting in 2.5 hours. I've now downsized to an 8x10. Haha This painting of yours did turn out to be very Gauguin-like, in my opinion. Nice job!
Thanks, Linda. My pressure was really just for the video, I was trying to get as much done as possible. This is a normal size for me to work, but I'm not at all trying to finish in one session. I've put three more session in on that painting and still excited to get more work done on it!

thank you. And just to mention it, feel free to make an opinion on any work regardless of the information you have on it. For instance, when you walk in a gallery, you may know nothing of the artist/location/intention, and can only judge based on your personal opinion.
WOW!! your painting is remarkable! You must have used 3 tubes of white...You paint soooo thick!!! is that a problem when you change the colors already there???
Thank you! I don't find it a problem when painting over another color, and I don't typically mind if areas aren't covered completely, showing other colors, etc.
Did I see you spray water on your painting in the middle of your session? So are you using water soluble oil paints? Thank you so much for the video my husband and I enjoyed watching it.

The panting will live on without you, and must stand on its own. So what happens on the canvas is more important than what actual placement is in the land. This has been going on for hundreds of years. The mountain doesn’t care since we are all so temporary. If you needed to outright copy, you’d use a camera instead of paint.
