Pw4 is Zinc white. Some brands combine them for lacking of titanium white. Thats why it gets yellow

I'm pretty sure that if you put those yellowing paintings in the sunlight for a couple of days they will clear up. Anything with zinc in it will also tend to crack much more quickly, so I'd say stick with the PW6. Good luck!

Also if you storage your paintings in the dark, it tens to yellow the titanium white

  • @ChrisBreier
    @ChrisBreier 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

I think the yellowing of white oil paint is caused by the linseed oil that's used in most brands of oil paints. I noticed at 3:21 that the Gamblin white contains Safflower oil which doesn't yellow nearly as much. It will be interesting to see if that solves the problem for you. From what I read, I guess the PW4 (zinc white) is added as an attempt to reduce yellowing. M Graham uses walnut oil which yellows less. I also tried Lukas oils and they use sunflower oil for the lighter colors. Nice painting by the way....I enjoy watching your videos!

@@turnervinson Something else to look into is that storing paintings in darkness or subdued lighting can cause yellowing. Golden has a good article on this, search for "What is dark yellowing". I guess it's reversible by exposing the painting to sunlight.

Hi, love your art!! Is your free mini- course still available? Link isn't working. Thanks so much!!

  • @frwiiso101

It's the other way around. The pw6 is the one which is yellowing over time (if you use a lot of linseed oil in the medium). However, pw4 are prone to cracking over time. Some say that a mix of pw6 and pw4 cancel out each other's deficiencies, but I don't trust that claim. I would choose yellowing over cracking any day, so I stick to pure pw6.
    According to Jackson's Art supplies:
Titanium Dioxide White has a reputation for causing yellowing in oil paint. The yellowing is not caused by a
mutation of the pigment itself. In fact, titanium white is one of the most colorfast of all pigments. Rather, the
culprit is the pigment’s inert nature, which makes it less capable than other pigments of holding onto the oil.
This creates a tendency for oil to migrate and form a thin film on the paint surface."
So if you use stand oil, sun bleached linseed oil or some other non-yellowing oils in your medium instead of ordinary linseed oil, yellowing won't be a problem.
I love your videos by the way. I often just let them run all the day on my tv screen.

The Russian easel is apparently so good that you carry it everywhere, it's so old. Maybe that's why it's falling apart? Russian paints are really the best in the world. The Ladoga company is the Russian paints of the Nevsky Palette line.

The PW4 (Zinc White) although in small percentage is mixed in to help with the non-yellowing, gives it a more cool (bluish tone) and transparent vibe to the white, has quite many advantages. The yellowing was because of the excess of linseed oil, that, however is a not a disadvantage when Zinc white is mixed with Titanium dioxide. The main problem with PW4 is not the yellowing (that he smallest if one may say so), but cracking! Using in so thickly (as I did myself) on canvas will make your soul uneasy, especially after some years. I stopped using PW6/PW4 altogether only for this reason. Anything more than 2% PW4 in a mix of white will make the paint film brittle. Tested myself. PW6 after one year of oxidizing it almost like rubber where the same PW6/PW4 is almost like thin glass (unfortunately). Let you paintings done with PW6/PW4 take enough light, and the yellowing will disappear.

Just an odd question from I don’t know where in my mind …….
    Water colour
    Oils
    Acrylics
Is it “doable “ to do a combination of these mediums in the one painting….
    Successfully?

In my experience alizarin crimson (unmixed) from van gogh loose a lot of its hue and/or saturation over time. I have heard other artists making sure they use alizarin crimson permanent instead. What are your experience? Love your painting style 🤓
