  • It was reported last week that suspended Colorado Avalanche forward Val Nichushkin would be taking part in a Russian summer league during July and August. We have a lot of questions about that.
We also have a lot of questions about the shocking news that the Washington Capitals have reportedly purchased the very popular salary cap website Cap Friendly for their own personal use and will shutter the site in mid July. We have a lot of questions about this as well.
Finally we give Joel Kiviranta his season grade.

For me, the Val situation feels like a slap in the face to the fans. You can’t stay clean for the NHL, leave your team and fans out to dry not once but twice in the playoffs; then go to Russia to play? No sir, not cool. If he does get hurt playing in Russia maybe he can be put on LTIR and maybe we can use that cap space.

@@paulrr5711 we’ll see McFarland prioritized him over kadri, and I think the Avs are married to him unless the NHL rules in their favor. He’d look great with Bedard tho- so maybe something can be worked out. But w/o Landy & Nichushkin, the Avs will continue to be pretenders…

It seems to me that McFarland should make a statement in hopes of clarifying Nickushkin's move to Russia for the summer. There are some very concerning questions and you have broached some of them. If we don't get some clarification from the team, this entire summer will be one day after another of pure speculation.

I agree, but the Avs MO is sweeping things under the rug and not talking about it, kinda how they dealt with Val and the hooker, er, woman, in the hotel room.

You know, something just hit me. I can’t remember a time when you guys have maybe made mention of this but I am about 3/4 of the way through today’s episode where you guys are talking about Kivi’s season grade. You mentioned he came from Dallas. Do you guys maybe possibly think Dallas gave up on Val because they knew about his problem? I understand things have to be reported, but maybe somehow things got swept under the rug and they didn’t want to deal with it anymore.

the way I've heard it danced around by Dallas media is "off ice maturity issues". I think they gave up on Val because he was there in the Hitchcock 2.0 era and couldn't score to save his life.

A former AP participant (Chris Mason?) said it wasn't a very helpful program. I understand Micieli has experience w addiction treatment, but it seems like the NHL version isn't up to standard. I mean, you said it yourself on this episode: "its secretive." IMO its just a CBA section negotiated by NHLPA to protect player contracts

Reality with Val is that it’s all speculation. None of us know what’s actually going on with him other than there are issues. Seems it could be an unconscious bias to assume that going to Russia to train in the summer immediately means he’s not getting the support he needs. Trying to put myself in another’s shoes, I can see it being quite difficult if I lived in a country where I barely spoke the native language and outside of the camaraderie of my teammates and organization, I felt basically alone. Yet at the same time, I was a well known public figure. If you’ve ever seen him be interviewed, he never looks comfortable so picture what that’s like when he leaves the rink. I just think in general, social opinions create a lot of story about folks in the spotlight which results in folks completely overlooking the human aspect before rushing to judgement. For all we know, spending time in his native country around people he is comfortable with is just what the doctor ordered. And maybe that’s not the case but point being, none of us have any idea.

@devildog5354 Not being critical but unless you know one or both personally, that reply only strengthens the point of my statement that it’s all speculation. Having a pretty wife and money in no way guarantees someone isn’t suffering from something we know nothing about.

The Caps bought Cap friendly?! Wasnt it free (give or take the premium version). Why buy it then, unless they were so paranoid someone else would buy it. It would be the only way to actually make sense for ANYONE to try and buy it imo.

I'll say first off that I hope Val can get clean & healthy simply for his own sake. Secondly, I'd love a clean and healthy and dominant Val back on the Avs. However......
I'm going to say that looking at an SPC in the CBA he's breached it in soooooo many ways, (Sections 2 b, c & e and sections 4, 6 & 7 for starters), and I will admit that I am not a lawyer.
I can't imagine that the Avs have sanctioned this unless it's an 'agreement' with Nichushkin to get to a way to terminate the contract but surely a mutual agreement wouldn't need that?
As for the PAP, has he breached that as well? Which then would surely push him into tier 4? No idea on that one. It's perplexing to say the least.

P.S. Stuff the Capitals, I hope they lose all their support and have to relocate to Quebec! Jealousy I don't think is an issue. It was a great bit of fun, a useful and mostly free resource for hockey fans, and a great way to connect with other fans and chat hockey.

The situation with Val looks mishandled right from the start(Seattle). However, maybe their hands are tied because of union rules; I don’t know. Val’s actions reek of someone who doesn’t truly take the situation seriously. In other words,”I don’t really have a problem(addict’s typical response).” This almost makes me wonder if he’s TRYING to get released so that he can go back home and do what he wants, including illegal activities.

According to Colorado Hockey Now, the Media league in Russia is kind of a glorified beer league. He compared it to Da Beauty league that happens in Minnesota every summer and includes many NHL players including Erik Johnson and Casey Mittelstadt. There are these types of leagues or organized skates all over the world that NHL players participate in, so there likely isn't any type of contract issue that way.

a rehabbed Nichushkin playing for the Avs this upcoming season would be the biggest impact move the Avs could make.

So hes not allowed to play a playoff game but then a month later is potentially playing in a another league. IDK how much facts there are to this but if its true this is a really bad look. I have been in rehab, when you go in you cant even talk to anyone on the outside let alone go play hockey. So I don't know whats up with this anyone have a link? Or was this just something read out of context? But yea 1 6 month actual reahab program he wouldn't be let off the premissises for a while especially not for this. If this is true it looks like recovery is over. Maybe the deal is sealed he's back to Russia.

I feel on the other hand maybe being close to family and having the support might help him get clean but yeah idk how u do a treatment program. as far as cap-friendly Im sure someone will come out with something els and idk why any team would want to buy it just to block it off from ALL NHL fan idk why the NHL just dont owne it then. for Washington to to buy it is such a joke clearly they cant win on skill hahha.
