Nice comparison! Using an editor with the Pro-800 (my favorite is the Swumpf editor) makes all the difference - I haven't had to deal with the native menu system in ages.
How easy is it to program a patch on the hardware then swing over to the editor to save and manage it?

$400 or $2,300 is kinda big difference.
Had it for almost a year now, the Pro-800. I’ve owned the real Prophet 600 with the gligli mod, a Juno-60, a JX3P, a Korg Polysix, an Oberheim Matrix 6, a Sequential Six-Trak amongst other classic analog poly synths and a bunch of modern polys too and the Behringer Pro-800 is pretty much as good as the best of them (Juno-60, Polysix and Matrix 6), and way better sounding than all the VST synths I’ve owned (that have tried to sound analogue) as well as most other modern day analogue synths.
The Pro-800 has a depth, a snappiness and an organic sound and feeling that most hardware and software synths of the modern day seem to lack. It also has a really gritty bass and is capable of a huge variety of sounds.
Usually I get tired of synths and sell them after weeks or months, but this one I will keep along with my Juno-60 and Polysix.
For me personally, the pad you made till the middle of this video sounds better on the Pro-800.
A $400 synth versus a $2300 synth - some might say not a fair fight. I guess you could buy some very nice external effects for the $1900 you saved buying a Pro-800
Those extra 4 voices really matter because you can play 2 sequences plus a lead on top at the same time. Really great for DAWless. Many of the patches have distinct timbres depending on the octave so there is definitely a sense that 3 patches are playing at once. Also using the snapper envelopes means you can get some nice acid bass lines.
I find it absolutely stupid how the Pro-800 menu works when you want to change performance settings. If you hit the Perf button after changing a setting it resets the patch for some reason, you have to hit the settings button to get to the settings menu, then hit the setting menu again to get out of it for the patch to not reset.
Other than that, I'm pretty happy with how mine sounds, absolutely fantastic little machine.
I think they did a good job overall despite some small shortcomings. Just a few years ago you would not even dream of getting this thing at this low price and from demos of professional sound designers it does sound good. Same thing with UB-XA.
Then you have majority of knob tweakers who will never be happy always buying and selling because they are simply not gifted creating good music with it which isn't easy.
If you want fx they better be good or they could ruin the sound easily (Bodyssey is an example). Good FX aren't cheap and in a budget priced gear that's unheard of
Thanks for the great video. I am pretty basic, but I couldn't tell much difference between the patches - thought they both sounded really good. I run the pro 800 through a nightsky and it sounds lush. One day if I keep at it, I might save up and upgrade to something like the prophet 6, although for my music I find I need 8 voices.
The menu is utterly infuriating though, and I am also pretty disappointed that I cannot control the LFO with clock sync, because I use a lot of tremolo type effects.
Instead of a p6 you might want to aim for something like a peak if you like that sound as well. Much more reasonable in the price point and way more versatile while still sounding great. I will compare a p6 with the peak some day as the peak remains my favorite synth.
@@YukiTheSynthDragon I'm really tempted by the peak so would enjoy watching that video - would be good to see how it compares to the prophet, because the pro 800 has become central to my band's sound. If I got a peak, it would potentially mean I wouldn't need to bring the nightsky with me to gigs as I could use the peak's internal reverb, which would save me some hassle
It totally worth it, it is a great synth if you know how to program it. The Prophet 5 is superior in my opinion, I own both, but it is still a good synth.
Great video and glad you sorted out your HW issue , I had same experience with a lot of brands it s helas something comon those dayz and I m talking expensing stufff ..
May I ask you how you campare sonicaly the take 5 and the p6 ?
The take 5 has quite a bit of high frequency roll off not mater how open the filter is. The p6 can be much brighter in terms of high frequency response. Filters are similar. They both sound great. I will do a video down the road. Take5 is way more flexible in terms of sound design but it does lack a triangle wave, instead it has an analog sine wave per oscillator which is super neat.
@@YukiTheSynthDragon oh didn't knew that , but the sine waves makes fiull sens giving FM option (witch correcte me if i'm wrong , i didn't saw on the P6) ..as for the bridghtenss i've found the P6 really dark versus the 800 witch reminded me more of the ob6 in that aspect (good think ,we can always take of than add on) so you tellying me the take 5 is even darker makes me wonder lol ... can't we trick on the take 5 to create a triangle via mid way between sine and triangle ?
By the way i really like your videos and the fact that you compared raw tones is imho a msut , be sure on next one that even if fx are present (and have to be covered also) to make at least one section raw... and then one section with FX (witch are an important part of the synth , but not the most ;)) imho)
Keep doing the great job .... and yep i do think imho that the minilogue xd (one sitting in front of me , module) is by far the most capable and solid synth under 1000 eruos (analog) , it can even do stuff that 1500 $ synths , people overlook the fact that you have 4 automation lanes (than can even automate the voices settings) and that you can pretty modulate everything via a daw like bitwig or live (been doing noise modulation and it's just superb , still i think the moog is king in that aspect (and this is what i was trying to replicate) , the drive is savage and can get yiu in MS 20 terrirtory , and the fird osc is just an open door on a whole word (love the casio osc 's ..)
The Sequential seems quieter (10 minutes in). Did you match the levels?
Yeah I tried to auto normalize they are within 2db. The thing is the p6 was hard to match because at half volume it’s putting out almost as much volume as the pro 800. Either way they look close enough to get the idea of both across, obviously they are not matched well enough volume wise to get actual testing data from them. I 1-2 db is within spec of the left and right output difference on the p6 for example.
Would rather have seen A/B of previously made from scratch patches for a couple each bass, brass/wind solo, keys, organ, and lead sounds. Still, the observations were spot on. I lived with a Pro 800 for a few weeks and loved the sounds coming out of it, but no way was living with the menu so back it went. I wish the Take 5 design team had been allowed to do it as a desktop for about the same target price and add a few things. 4 quadrant multiplier/voice with mix level to filter, MPE response, modern LFOs (fade in/out, phase, "N" shot - why not since they are just digital), and especially bi-timbrality. Such would NEVER be allowed to keep market segmentation and not step on 6 voice model sales. Would not be at all surprised if resonance on Take 5 was "tamed" on purpose for that reason as well. Onboard effects are a disgrace on all Sequential kit. For me in the end if I want "this" synth and space is not an issue while budget maybe is then Take 5 is it. If space is and budget less so I would certainly either wait for another sale when it is about the same price or break another piggy bank for a P10 desktop over a P6.
I had not been considering a Pro-800 till a couple of days ago. Nor have I ever considered a Take-5, largely because of the form factor. The TEO-5 however, has me wishing for a desktop version. I would consider most of the FX (reverb certainly) as "reference only" .......but yeah. I'm broke, and now I'm gassing for a Cobalt8M ...so I'm thinking of dropping all my higher brow analog poly considerations and Just getting a Pro-800. - I really only want it to generally "do the thing" in the context of a song with other instruments. In a daw, with an editor. .....I dunno. Maybe a skip too. I'm actually really beginning to like what my OBX vst is doing for me. I always thought I'd replace all those tracks with "the real thing" but now I'm like: 'this is doing exactly what I want already.' - If I got a pro-800 it would almost be for the sake of twisting knobs with self-imposed limitations. (shrug) /rambling. (sorry)
@@swanofnutella4734 I do believe resonance on Take 5 was dialed back on purpose. If not for that I could see no reason other than space constraints for going with a P6 desktop over it. TEO-5 looks like it might be a different story; they might not have cut enough out of it because initially at least it is hard to think of a reason to get an OB-6 desktop over it other than space. It looks REALLY good. If they had done a desktop with the added capabilities I mentioned for Take 5 above instead of just really good it would have been mindblowing IMHO. As stated loved the Pro 800 sounds despised the interface. I lived with a Cobalt8M for over a year and built a LOT of patches with it. Especially the 2 slot effects are much better than on Sequential or most other synths. Not Summit good (nothing is), but still way better than average. No matter what I did it never gave me chills and not being able to just look and know where the knobs are when creating a patch is maddening.
@@klstay TEO just sounded so darn appealing to me in every clip I've seen. But, yes, space is a massive issue for me. As for the Cobalt8, I admit I've seen few videos that absolutely blow my socks off, but also: there are very few videos that have been made since the last firmware patch. Also, there were very few Hydra videos that blew me away (sound wise) when I bought it, but I am so glad I did. Same with Virus. Again, 0 regrets. Between those two, I in no way need a Cobalt8. I want one anyways, though I should be focussing on a cost effective means to fill the biggest absence in my toolkit: An affordable, simple, sweetspot analog poly. A desktop TEO would be the perfect answer for me.
@@swanofnutella4734 unless you are looking for some TZFM sideband type stuff (still cannot believe the design team was allowed to include that) there is no place TEO-5 goes Hydrasynth cannot get, but admittedly with a fair bit more effort. (Cue the "yeah but one is analog and the other digital so no way dude" comments. Guaranteed on a well done patch your ears cannot tell) On Hydra you need to spend a bit of time in VoiceMod Edit fed with TINY amounts of LFO, series filter 1 always wide open or HP with MODEST pre-filter drive settings with no EG or LFO and just keytracking plus maybe velocity then manually peel off whatever top you want, then filter 2 set just like you would on an OB-6/X8.
@@klstay Totally. I have put Creative Spiral's virtual analog init patch to good use. No digital/analog arguments from me. Love both. Kinda want the analog sweetspot machine FOR it's limitations. Sometimes you want the narrow/specific path.
Just FYI, as I am sure you probably know this, there are at least two, possibly more, fantastic Pro-800 Editors out there. I know thats not the point if you want to edit on the synth but just wanted to put that out there.
It is a valid point since I think at least half of the audience for this synth is people using a daw.
@@YukiTheSynthDragon yeah that's why I don't care about it not having stereo spread. Just write the song, have the midi part ran through as many times as I want, pan those around to exactly where I want, eq'd and fx'd how I want, and then bounce all of those as needed.
Is the hidden noise shaper present on the take 5 or rev 2 ?
The take 5 yes. But it’s not part of the lfo, it’s part of the mod matrix so you dont even have to waste an entire lfo on it making it super flexible. I have never used a rev2.

As for the video , i've found more dynamic on the Pro 800 , like there's a compression on the P6 (obvious on the pad) , not a bad thing just a more controlled dynamic specially when the filter open in the enveloppe sequence ....
@@ZozillaThaGreat I just really like how the oscillators sound on the p6 and wanted a completely analog signal path. The take 5 actually cuts quite a bit of the high end out as well compared to the p6. I like both for different reasons.
The REV 2 has 4 LFOS very easy to get this sound.. Its Daves Smiths Best synth for sound design by far..
Don’t you like the bit out of tune character of (vintage) analog synths? It is one of the main reasons I like the Polysix better than the Juno-60.
I do like that character but within reason.

I feel as though certain Behringer synthesizes are worth buying, but if you’re a true synthesize of fanboy or girl, you will mix and match synthesizers so it doesn’t really matter what the prices unless you are on a budget
You can modulate the shape of p6 in poly mod.. what do you mean you cant?
Polymod yes, lfo no. Polymod requires the loss of the 2nd oscillator or it needs to follow the filter envelope.

Well the menu system on the pro 800 doesn’t look too bad to me. Like the Roland boutiques which cost the same but it’s full digital…

The menu system on the pro 800 is absolute trash. The third party editors totally fix it and make it fantastic, as long as you're using it in a non-live environment. They kinda turn it into a weird hybrid softsynth/hardsynth situation that i think is worth it for the sound.

@@mudi2000a nah. It's a hardware design issue. The buttons and little 7 segment display are the problem. There's just no way ON IT it interface with any advanced without menu diving and remembering which buttons have multiple functions that aren't labeled.
Behringer is fine for people who simply cannot afford more expensive synths, what my issue with Behringer is, that they fail to make a modern take of a classic, ie pan mod or fx section or more importantly, stereo out.
They do it with some synths, with others they don't and it's a shame with the P800 because it does sound good.
Also even sequential has a middle ground. There is the Take-5 and now the TEO-5 which I think are great for the price if the higher end ones are too expensive and you don’t want to buy a Behringer.
@@mudi2000aTake 5 is a great synth. The Teo 5 apparently is also really nice. Both have great sound, and good modulation.
Besides a stereo out, would you say a new basic wave is needed? More woodgrain?
@@mudi2000a Te05 is shortlisted, I have 2 more bits of gear I can fit on my desk, tossing up between an Osmose and Te05, heavily leaning towards the Teo5 for sound, it's a thing of beauty imo.
I’m fortunate to be able to afford expensive synths, I’ve bought a few Behringer clones because they sound perfectly acceptable for the money. No issues with quality either.
I really wanted to love the pro 800, but open filter just sounds too nasty and not in a good way, overall too thin for my taste.
The price point is really nice ofc.

I feel that any synth Behringer has made with the v3340 sounds very harsh with no filtering. The oscillator has a very buzzy upper end. The ms1 has the same upper end harmonics as well. A little filter fixes it.
everyone online says a sped up s&h does the same thing as noise as an lfo. I couldn’t disagree more.
It’s not sped up s and h, at the highest speed it connects a noise source to the lfo on the p6, ob6, and t6
Thank you for this video! While we love both synths, we also prefer the P6. But we wouldn't compare them since the P6 is clearly a different synth in terms of specs. Apart from a huge price difference, the P6 has for example that lovely highpass filter makes it completely different. But also pan spread and the vintage mode and not to forget the effects. Btw, quick tip: You have a quick tune in the Behringer, we wrote that in our review. Just press tune for about 3 seconds and you start the quicktune process, so that's not a problem in our view. We always say, we would have loved that these cheap options were available new when we started in the 80s/90s. It is much more in reach these days, great times to be alive for the youngsters :)
It’s an amazing time for synths.
Back in 1990 I spent £1k on an Atari with Cubase and a Wavestation A/D. Second hand. Well over £2k in todays money. That was a basic starting set up.

You ever consider a VA? A legit one not just a digtal poly with filter.
Yes I use to own many va synths. My favorite was the ms2000 and cobalt 8.

They're pretty good now. Went from a MKS-80 to VA for subtractive poly and would never go back.
I just bought a Ob-6 .. im the type of guy that if im gonna go cheap im better off getting a U-he vst.. i feel like we arnt gonna see the full effect of how bad these synths are till like a few years down the the road.. and im talking build quality .. ive seen a few of these with wobbly knobs and things just breaking out of nowhere.. and whos gonna send a 300 dollar synth to get fixed ..
Where did you see a few with wobbly knobs? And what bits broke out of nowhere? How does something even break out of nowhere?
The pro 800 was a terrible experience as an instrument. The knobs, the bottoms, the menu etc. very sub par. And for some reason I can hear so many behringer synths sounding similar. Something like a metallic abrasive sound that’s not too loud but there.
Many of the vst emulations are pretty great nowadays so I go for those.
That’s been my experience with the few Behringer products I tried; They are junk. Furthermore, I feel it’s unethical to clone current companies’ current products. Examples: Moog, Sequential, Oberheim, Make Noise.
What other Behringer synth sound similar? I have owned several and none of them sound like the Pro 800. I think the Pro 800 sounds good, if you know how to program it.
@@dalelaushman8749- whatever you feel about Behringer clones being unethical, their pricing model makes the bigger boys appear unethical. It’s a balance.
They could easily charge double for their 808, 909, 303 clones. Easily.
Behringers always seem to have these crackling noisy artifacts in the high end. I had it with my neutron too, but yea you can kind of always tell if its a behringer clone because of that.

@@mbromberti literally just noodled on mine for last the 5 hours and I didn't hear any of it on my pro800. That being said, get a midi keyboard for it and use editors and get patches. The thing is capable of sounds of all kinds. I have a hs deluxe, a jdxi, and a bs2, and they all bring great stuff to the table. The pro800 is a CRAZY good value though. All being said, I'm still in my first year of hardware synths, so, take my opinion for what you will
Do you power it from USB? (If that is at all possible..)
I do not. As much as I hate external power supplies @@PWMaarten, I hate combining data and power connections more, and so I power mine with an ac adapter (it uses a barrel plug).
I just unplugged the power on mine and it won't turn on, so I'm guessing you have to use an ac adapter.
