Kinda sad to see mads gets all the attention. The three other main characters (I know they aren't worldknown as he is) does a phenomenal job too. Specially considering Thomas Bo Larsen has been a longtime alcoholic himself in his former years.

indeed my only compaint about this movie is that it can't quite decide if it wants to focus on the main character, or the group of friends. At the end of the day tho, with the focus leaning heavier on Martin it pulls it off quite well I 'd say, almost reminiscent of trainspotting with Renton standing out from the rest.
@@DILLIGER90 Don't make it complicated. It was everything it wanted to. A story mainly about an individual with a related story of a group with similar issues. I love it, you love it don't look for criticism when it isn't present in the first sight.

Mads is so underrated, he's always great in his roles and still dont have much recognition. Makes me sad that he never won an Emmy for Hannibal.
If you are talking underrated you should rather list some of the great actors that Mads gets to play up against. His performance is highly recognized, but it wouldn't be as great as it is, if not for his co-actors. Thomas Bo Larsen for example is both great in this and he was a huge part of the famous church scene in the Hunt.
@@Bronzescorpion I’m not gonna lie, I went into this movie because of Mads and because I loved Jagten. But I was just as invested with the other main characters as I was with Martin. It wouldn’t have been as good a movie without them.
@@REChronic54 Yeah Mads is the main ingredient that makes you order the dish, but it is only when you see how all the flavors goes together to elevate the entire meal, that you truly can appreciate it. Hope you don't mind the metaphor.
I am just glad as a Dane, that the movies I get to see doesn't have to rely on a single great actor, but that we have far too many really amazing actors than we have any right to wish for.
Have you seen Queen of Hearts by any chance (Dronningen)? Great Danish film, but like Jagten it can at times be painful to watch.

@@REChronic54 Just to be clear. The Danish actors that you have already got familiar with from Jagten and Druk are not in this film. It is just another great Danish movie with other great Danish actors, especially the lead actress, she knocks it out of the park.

Edit: It, was amazing. The acting, pacing, music, facts sprinkled in...just...superb. Next time I'm in New Orleans, I should try a Sazerac. Lol
As a sober alcoholic this movie was eye opening to how the general population views alcohol. The joyous life affirming ending was the most horrifying thing I’ve seen on film. Not bad, but chilling. Mads’ character was given a free pass, and the consequenses of his personal actions disappeared. Real life doesn’t work like that. If you grow dependant on alcohol, and people say stop, leave you, like his wife did it’s a wake up call. His wife coming back just like that seems to me to be an undoing of the learning experience, and a way for him to forget everything and re-start his abusive cycle. I was sweating and shaking during the ending. Also Thomas Bo Larsen, whose character becomes addicted (and clearly has a problem with alcohol from the get go) and dies in the movie as a consequense is in real life an openly sober alcoholic.
I think they the director deliberately wanted to show all sides of the coin.

@@telmolicious Yes... I have not denied that. I'm just saying that without proper first hand experience on the matter, the ending presents quite differently. Not jubilant (as most people tend to take it as, and as the director has stated it to be publicly) but horrifying and negating of the whole experience in the film.
@@QueenToKingOfSpades As an alcoholic you should know that your experience with alcohol is not typical. I don't mean the amount you drank was atypical (at least to start with), I mean your tendency to get addicted is. Alcohol for many people, including myself, helps create strong social bonds among friends. I do know 2 people like you that couldn't cope, but still overall it was and is worth it for us who can. It sucks to suck, try not to project that onto other people.
After seeing Another Round twice on Hulu and once at the IFC Center when theaters reopened here in NYC (with a video message from Vinterberg preceding the film), I added it to my top 50 favorite movies of all time. It’s a masterpiece.

Wow, you really nailed this review. All the background facts about the film's production are just dead on and also Vinterberg's decision to celebrate life instead of alcohol due to his daughter's fatal accident with the extremely cathartic (and needed!) end scene. You don't get to hear such a deep understanding of a foreign movie very often from US critics (sorry Americans - love you anyway). So, kudos to you, well done. You earned yourself a sub right there!

Fun fact .05 is actually the legal limit for drink driving in Australia. A not so fun fact: you are twice as likely to have a crash when driving with a blood alcohol level of 0.05%, versus no alcohol. Drink responsibly folks.
One of the best parts of living in New York is that it is a walking town. Apart from falling into traffic, I can drink and stay relatively safe.
The alcohol limit in Denmark is 0.5 for driving.

Finally saw this in the UK tonight. Absolutely blown away. Riotous, Bacchanalic, yet equally complex and moving.
Also really want to try and make one of those cocktails they all indulge on in that epic bender about half way through!

@@peterfastservice7723 i bet it is, but i also think that alchohol is on a next level culture in denmark and we are still a wealthy country ( no hate or anything ) this movie just show so much of the danish culture as youths and as adults in marrige and etc.. i really just think that this movie really hits people in the heart as a dane :)

Well done. I’ll subscribe away. I absolutely loved the last sequence too. I’m glad I didn’t know to expect it; but you certainly aren’t spoiling anything. The comments regarding a North American production likely being burdened assuming audiences are incapable of thought and inference was spot on. The day after seeing the film I came to a conclusion about one of its themes (when celebrating a subject as complex as ‘life’ there’s bound to be many) that made me appreciate the film even more. Excellent.

After learning the fact about the directors daughter, everytime I see for Ida I start bursting into tears. Both The Hunt and Another Round have had a huge impact on me and really helped with my love for cinema so naturally I highly appreciate the director and seeing that dance scene with the follow up being the for Ida screen absolutely floored me. Also, what was the shot you were referring to that was incredibly sad if you don’t mind me asking?

Loved this review. This movie and Riders of Justice (also Mads) are my favourite movies for many, many years. Both totally life affirming and could never have been made in Hollywood.

He was also in the Hunt or “jagten” he is a great actor with so much Edge and i really Think that he reminds us all of someone we know👍🏻 For sure all the mentioned movies are worth the Watch if you are looking for something thats not just a Hollywood sob stort
Thomas Bo Larsen was also the star of Vinterbergs film school graduation film, 'Sidste Omgang' (Last Round), one of the finest of its kind ever made. It too, is a celebration of life, despite the main character going through the film knowing that he will soon die from illness.

So I was wondering: for all you none danish people out there (maybe also outside the nordic countries) - Where there things that confused you about the movie? Like the drunk students on buses or how the classes were run? Or just generally? Always curious how non-danish people react or think about our maybe more grounded movies.
I'm a person who totally understands that there are different cultures in different parts of the world,so I don't find anything surprising. Instead, I found it very exciting and I hope to live some part of my life there.❤️

Awesome movie, but I don't sure about the meaning of ending. Is it some sort of beginning another iteration of loop? Or is it just about “good side” of alcohol?

I think its that you should have a healthy relationship with alchohol
The movie isn't even about alcohol, it's about living and experiencing life. Alcohol is just the vehicle for the characters to express this need, they set a goal, followed through, with mixed results - a perfect allegory for the decisions you make in life, and the result of such, you know "results may vary"
Loved this review, and I thought Another Round was an amazing movie. It was actually the first movie by Thomas Vinterberg and I am now really curious to see the Hunt.
The hunt is much better. Completely different gear though

Oh I thought the ending was super sad? He got the text messages from his wife, but instead of going and talk to her and get things right, he chose alcohol over her?
I don't think that he chooses alcohol infront of his wife but that in a moment of elation bc both the fact that his students are celebrating their graduation which reminds him of his younger self and that his relationship with his wife isn't over that he breaks out dancing and celebrating life

@@pollutingpenguin2146 I see your point but I believe that Martin (madds) stops the whole thing earlier. He doesn't stop drinking altogether but he slows down and regonizes the parts that alcohol played in his wife leaving him and that wakes him up to his problem.
I do however think that him drinking and celebrating that close after the funeral is involved with the deeper meaning of the film. It shows a more realistic view on alcoholism, your life doesn't end altogether and things can change for the better as in his wife texting him and his students starting a new chapter of their life.
The song that plays during that last dancing scene "what a life" is chosen because despite his dear friend dying there is still wonderful things in life that make it worth celebrating.
@@pollutingpenguin2146 or maybe I'm reading into it a little bit more than I should but that's what I took away from the movie and that's what I loved about it, it doesn't tell you how to feel but gives you a taste (pun intended) of both sides and then let's you take away what you think.

Another Danish movie classic from the year 2000 is "Blinkende Lygter" (Flickering Lights in English) .. definitely a movie worth watching, It also stars Mads Mikkelsen as one of the 4 lead caracters , definitely a unique film in it's own way, for me personally, I can't even count how many times I've watched it, and I usually don't watch movies more than once, my favorite movie for sure.. go check it out.. :)

was anyone else left feeling kind of eerie and sad by the celebration at the end? almost like all that pain and hardship just to end up back at square one. idk, but i dont think ive ever felt worse looking at a group of people having a great time.
I read a lot of things into that ending. Sure, it was bittersweet, as they were actually having a memorial dinner for their dead friend. Martin, after already having danced, gazes at the sea where Tommy ended his life days earlier. What does he think of? Then suddenly he goes all in with the moves. Perhaps, he is taking "Another Round" at life? "To dare is to lose one's footing momentarily. Not to dare is to lose oneself". Martin finally dares to dance in front of his friends, unlike in the beginning of the movie. He stumbles for a bit, but is also truely living in that one, fleeting moment.
Specs.... that’s all I’ll say.
So, also recommend the tv series ‘Borgen’ (West Wing
) and ‘Klovn’ Clown) from Denmark - absolute killer series... will keep you amazingly entertained

Your interpretation of "Druk / Another round" is a lot different than mine actually. I think it's an embodiment of Danish drinking culture and how borderline alcoholism is glorified in blissful ignorance. It's not uncommon for High-school students (myself included sometimes) to drink upwards of 50 beers a week going to parties etc. As such, I see the ending as the perfect example of that and not a celebration of life. It was very interesting to see what an American got out of it though :)
Purpose with the experiment wasnt too show how bad alcohol was but the pro´s and cons alcohol can have on you its neither bad or good. Celebration of life can be interpretated in many ways and dont necessarily has to be good.
There is a bigger picture in this movie that i think you missed :)

Comment 3 months late, but I saw the movie just now! Was curious about opinions around it and appreciated the video.
I have to say that I thought this movie was incredibly underwhelming. While I am not familiar with the director, I am still curious to check out the hunt, but I watched this movie for Mads.
I think this type of movies are the most frustrating ones: great actors and performances, well realised, overall interesting artistic direction with this “youth drinking in Denmark” setting, and yet it left me with “no meat on the bone” if you will. The absolute lack of a strong message or interesting themes explored throughout was infuriating, even more so by the hokey rushed ending where the main characters didn’t learn a thing.
I feel like the fact you had a drink at the start of the review shows a clear disconnect with how I perceived the characters and how you did: the depiction of alcohol as funny and dramatic feels like the director wants to have their cake and eat it too. I feel incredibly uncomfortable in the scenes where alcohol consumption is paying off, while not caring at all about these unlikable and self-centred characters.
I am glad many people enjoyed it, I’ve seen far worse movies don’t get me wrong, but I ended up so indifferent that the biggest flaw of this movie is that I will probably forget about it in a day or two.
Sorry for the negativity, I enjoyed the video and I am curious to see more of you!
The whole point of the movie is not to be judgmental, so obviously there will be no strong message. Vinterberg's 19-yo daughter Ida died within the first 4 days they were shooting this film, but he still decided to keep filming because his daughter absolutely loved the script and was supposed to act in it as well (and was partially filmed in her classroom with her classmates you also see at the end). So the script was slightly rewritten to make the film a letter from Vinterberg to his daughter. So It's not just a film about drinking, but also became a film celebrating life and about living your life to it's full, a backstory that just makes it much more moving, and is most likely the reason why he got nominated by his fellow directors.

I learned of this production story after I watched the movie, and while I am in no place to judge how difficult and personally moving the creation of this movie must have been for the director and team, I still feel like making a distinction from the text of the movie and its context.
While I got the themes of celebrating life, even without this extra bit of context, I feel like my criticism are still relevant: especially this ending that I saw being praised as this celebration of life was for me an undermining of the reality they faced, wether it's the death of their friend who was actively seeking help and died from his friends passiveness, their self-destructive consumption of alcohol and, worst offender of all, the main characters wife magically giving him a second chance with obnoxiously cut phone messages.
Again, I don't want to take anything away from the people that connected to this movie, but external context or not the lack of things this movie wanted to say and its portrayal of character really left a bad taste in my mouth, even now reminiscing about it and writing this comment.

This movie is ok, but nothing special. It just beats around the bush for 2 hours. It goes from nowhere to nowhere. Completely mundane story. It just looks like regular life to me. I don’t need to see it on the screen. I basically live that already. No focused message, no actual point... just life as it is. I’d rather live it in the flesh than watch it through a screen. Just pick anyone in the street and make a movie about their life. Nothing particularly interesting here.
Well you obviously missed the point of this movie. It’s not a fantasy story, not an escapist movie. It’s a celebration of life and real people.

Pick anyone on the street over 30 years old and take a look at their lives and you'll find the same amount of heatbreak, pain, friendship, loss, illness, addiction, dealing and overcoming all of that. If you are going to make a movie like this, at least include something that makes the story interesting in some way above surface level.
