ATTENTION CONFUSED USERS: Even though the box is checked, you have to have the device you want to use Airplay on turned on. If the TV, or whatever you are trying to airplay to, isn't turned on then the dropdown will still say OFF and nothing else.

Sorry, didn't work. New samsung smart TV with built in Apple TV. TV doesn't show up as option on IMAC. Everything worked fine when I had Apple TV working with old TV. Can't seem to get IMAC to see new TV. Able to send music to system using bluetooth, but no video. Still, no icon on IMac for mirroring.
Dammit, over 10 years with this GD Mac and I still don't know the first thing about it!!! Where do I find this airplay thing???? And you can't just tell me it's "in the 'xxxxx' bar", you have to physically point out where the damn bar is. I shoulda stuck with windows!!

I had the same issue and figured it out! your ipad has to have the same apple account. I had my macbook air with 1 account and my ipad with another and that's why it wasn't working. I put both devices with the same account and bam! worked! good luck!

This didn't work but turning my bluetooth back on did bring back airplay icon.
So simple....but this was just what I needed. Thank you!

The only option I have on the Airplay Display is OFF there is no ON option at all
