Wow, that is a great technique - never saw that before - love how it gets the ink onto the embossing folder for a nice smooth background. Love the bonus print from the gel plate too.

What a great technique! I never thought much of jelly plates, the results always seemed messy and not particularly great. But wow! This is one worth trying for sure. The colors happen to be among my favorites. Thanks again for another valuable lesson. Hugs to you 💜

I have yet to open my gel plate I was given years ago. This looks like something I can do, so a good reason to get it out. I have that same big brayer--very old and still works great. Thanks for the inspiration!
I haven’t used the gel plate with paint very much, but using it with Distress oxides to ink blend easily is more for me. Use quick short strokes with the brayer to avoid taking off too much ink off the gel plate.

I have a jelly plate and have not used it yet. The cards are beautiful and I especially like that Altenew folder which I have so I'll have to try this technique.
Oh great, thanks! Nobody warned me of this so I’m not sure if it’s common but the 1st time I used my gel plate the cardstock got stuck a bit, it was so sticky.

thats amazing, i tried colouring backgrounds to get the same effect but looks terrible. will have to get my gel plate out and try that. Love it.
Blending is hard. I think oxides are easiest to blend even easier with this method.

The second pattern you made, that you said you probably wouldn't use as a card? It would make a lovely background for something more definite, or to cut into edging strips.

I’m so glad. For me, i need a creative jumpstart every now and then. Using the gel plate or media I haven’t used in a while helps me. You’re right, I’ll challenge myself to use that 2nd pattern I made. (If I can find it.) Thanks so much.
These are absolutely beautiful. I'd be interested to see the difference between the technique you used and brayering onto paper and running that through the folder. I wonder if it looks significantly different? Either way, these are lovely.
I have done that, my experience is there’s more streaks, the ink doesn’t blend as well and uneven application.. But when I use the gel plate I like to use a thinner paper, 65 lb, so I’m not sure how it looks with a better paper. If I’m going direct to paper I like using blending brushes.
Hi Susan, thank you for your fab video. I have a question, have you sprayed your card with water before embossing at all? If so does it make a difference to the outcome? As when I use 3D embossing folders i usually water spray it before embossing so the card doesn’t crack. Kind regards Tracey from the UK 🇬🇧 ❤
Thank you Tracey. Yes I do spray it sometimes. I’ve rarely had a problem with cracking paper, or if there is I didn’t notice it. For this, I didn’t spray it because any water drops would leave marks in the Distress oxide ink. Also, I used 65 lb cardstock here, pretty lightweight. I’ve seen more cracking with heavy cardstock. Misting the paper, especially with heavier cardstock and 3D folders does make a difference, you’ll see greater detail. But I’m not sure if I send the card to someone they’ll notice it. If you haven’t watched Yana Smakula’s video on this subject, I’d recommend it:) it’s good.
Can this technique be used with ink pads instead of distress inks?
I only have Distress Oxides and Distress inks. Even between these 2 I feel like it blends better with he oxides. But it’s worth a try!
Are you using watercolor paper?
No; 65 lb cardstock.
