Leica D-Lux 7 - Shooting Jpegs

  • Whilst shooting in raw mode is always going to offer the best quality, you do still need to do that work yourself in Photoshop or Lightroom. If you prefer to shoot Jpegs and let the camera do all the work, then the D-Lux 7 offers a surprisingly wide range of options to customise the look of your photo. Nick Rains demonstrates how.
    If you want to squeeze even more image quality out of this very capable camera, check out our Lightroom Develop Module E-Course:

    Bravo! Amazing what this little jewel can do on its own. I wouldn't mind staying on watching your tutorial for an hour plus going through every other jpeg tweaking. Thank you!

    Thank you Nick for the great presentation on what is now "My first Leica". I am enjoying the camera and I am very pleased that a Leica is now part of my small collection of cameras. In the process of enjoying the camera overall I came across what I am sure many photographers already knew about, namely the magnified focusing screen when shooting in manual focus mode.Sure enough, I set it up and when I use the control ring in manual focus mode it appears like magic and helps me a lot. My 82yr old eyes are not what they used to be and the magnified image is a great help to me when I want to really isolate the in focus part of my image. To my surprise one day it appeared in auto focus mode as well. Wow, this is great....and then it went away. Soooo I headed back to the great book by Alexander S. White on the Lumix DC-LX100 II. This book is beautifully written, at least for me, and it has helped me solve the multiple menu pages which appear to be virtually the same as my DeLux 7.
    No where in the book can I find how to turn on the magnified screen in AF mode. So I don't know how it appeared in the first place and then why it went away. I would like to assign a Fn button to turn it on and off so "I"can control it but none of the sub menus for the function buttons allow that choice. I would be grateful if you could instruct me so that "I" am in control of that function when ever I want it.
    Thank you for any help you might give.

      Check out 'Pinpoint Focussing' mode in the camera manual on Page 75. This might be what you are referring to.

    • @josephmcgrath6814
      @josephmcgrath6814 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeicaCameraAustralia Thank you Nick. Pinpoint selection is just what I was looking for. I set a function button to “AF area” and while in pinpoint the moveable focus area appears which I can move with the direction buttons then half press and the magnification appears for shooting…great. I can shut it off if I select to small area, then mag does not appear with shutter half press. CONTROL….that’s what I wanted.
      I know the Delux 7 is a couple of years old but do you know of any printed books that might continue to help me learn more about this lovely camera?
      Keep up the great videos and thank you again.

      Sorry, I don't know of any printed books. it's a surprisingly complex camera once you get past the more straightforward operations.

    Also you can change the aspect ratio using the adjustment on the lens. Another one best left to post processing in my opinion but it can be useful.

    I own a Model 109. An earlier model. Sometimes I try things inside but they just don't work right. I know the menu can be a bit difficult to read and understand. I should go to my Beverly Hills location but there was that worldwide 🌐 thing going on. I'm happy to see you enjoy your 7. Well off to my 116 model Q. I'll be watching you again.

    Thank you, very well explained tutorial. I have found that the in-camera jpgs are better than my efforts developing and fiddling with raw in Affinity.
    But I still take the raws too, just in case, and bin them if the picture is not that good..... 😀

    A great tool for street photography.
    Hope the D-Lux 9 (or D-Lux 7 mark II) will use the full M4/3 sensor size (with aspect ratio switch) for more MP, PDAF, same manual and retro controls (a Shutter Speed + ISO dial), a control dial & function button at the front if possible, a little bigger body to accommodate a tilt screen (not a fully articulated screen), IBIS if possible, Internal memory + SD card type II... Mic and headphones jacks if possible, ...
    A monochrome sensor version as well, why not?

    • @cnick6
      @cnick6 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's not really your fault. Sometimes changes occur in the newest firmware updates and Leica never bothers to "update" their manuals if they do make significant changes. Only a handful of companies do this correctly but it's really a shame they don't.

    Great presentation.
    I had briefly considered the D-Lux 7 as my first Leica. It's compact. It has a very useful zoom range. It offers a Macro setting. And the price is very attractive.
    However, I wasn't terribly thrilled with the motorized zoom, nor the complicated button array on the back, nor the fact that the camera is built is China. That's what got me to look more seriously at the CL.
    If the next iteration of the D-Lux were to offer a fixed 24mm - 75mm manually operated zoom, a simplified back like the CL, Q2, or SL2s, and be German made, that would really change the equation.

    • @WatchHobbyist
      @WatchHobbyist ปีที่แล้ว

      No thanks. I wouldn’t want any of that. This is a compact camera.

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    It misses out on the delightful desert option and you completely missed out the white balance adjustment for jpeg including the customisation of it. I’m only two years late watching this video but the camera was launched about six years ago I think. It’s a great pity that it misses out on a tilting screen and pop-up flash like the GX80. I have the 007 limited edition by the way, to go with my Q2 007 edition and currently collecting The Royal Mint’s '60 years of 007’ five shilling silver coins [can’t afford gold ones], four of which have already been released and three more to come over 2024. This will make a nice set. Yes, I do use the cameras but carefully and sparingly when I feel like it.

      Very hard to trouble shoot this - are you able to take the camera to a Leica store? The staff should be able to give you a run down on the camera's settings.

    Thanks for great tutorial. I’m considering this camera. Two questions for you. I think I know the answer to the first one. Do consider this camera relevant in 2023? When you use a special effect and opt for the standard jpg too can you still get a raw file? Thanks again.

    My question would be, is the V Lux 5 which uses a type-1 sensor going to be a major difference in dynamics. I like the compact nature of the d-lux 7 however in an ideal world I wish the lens used a larger zoom range.

    Hello Nick,
    I chose the Dlux-7 as my Leica entry level camera, however I am slowly learning that this price point is where I am finding my handicap. Maybe you would know a way around it. I would like to do some night photography and some long exposures.
    Could you do a long exposure on D-Lux 7, with or without ND filter. Also, explain how T on the shutter speed works? Shutter release button for Leica Dlux or remote?I’ve looked on youtube for anyone familiar with the DLux that could maybe elaborate on this.
    I also tried using the Leica App to do a long exposure to minimize any shakes but the shutter speed is very limited.
    I visited the Leica store in LA and they were completely useless.
    Thank you in advance.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  ปีที่แล้ว

      You can set exposures up to 60 seconds. You will need to use the Mechanical Shutter option, have the camera in Manual exposure mode, set 1+ on the shutter dial and then use the control ring around the lens to choose slower speeds. If you use the self-timer you do not need a remote to smoothly trigger the camera. Hope that helps. For more info refer to Page 65 in the camera manual.
      T in Manual mode means press once to open the shutter and once again to close it. You can go to 29 minutes this way. Again, only using Mechanical Shutter (Page 176).

      The D-Lux 7 can certainly shoot portraits and street photography to a surprisingly high level. Professionally? You'd be better off with an SL2, but that will of course depend on your budget.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia

      Have you tried taking the SD card out and putting it into the SD slot on the back of the iMac? Finder should then see the card as a new Location (left sidebar in Finder) and then you can manually move the images off by dragging and dropping, or using software like Adobe Lightroom.

      Autofocus is quick and effective. But you are really better pre-focussing or focus locking for street photography anyway. The AF for portraits is really good and the lens, being quite fast, gives a nice out of focus background when used at the tele end of the range.

    Le D-LUX 7 est un appareil photographique fragile fait en plastique et mal conçu au niveau de son électronique. Tout d'abord: 1 pas de transfert des fichiers type raw . (Seulement les fichiers compressés sont acquis par le logiciel wifi). 2 mise au point fantaisiste 3 déformation optique 4 Leica vend du vent car ce gadget ne pourra jamais être comparé à un M5 argentique ! 6 appareil invendable en occasion ...
