That is a 12 MP camera of nearly 18 years of age and some old lenses that were nearly 50 years old. I think Leica are aiming this camera as a sweetener to the photographer who wants the red badge, but is either unable or unwilling to pay the steep price of the Qs and the Ms. Once they are in with a Leica, they will probably have to upgrade to the Q or even the M in the near future. This is the prime reason of giving an old tech like the LX100II innards a mini Leica M body, so they feel they are part of the Leica family. Would I buy it? Not at the asking price, it is 30%~40% overpriced. at around a $1000.00, maybe, at the asking price, NO.

I have not received any information regarding dust proofing nor I was able to find it online with the limited info that's being published. The camera looks more sealed than before and it should be able to sustain a drizzle. The lens is not removable.
Nice to meet you, when I saw Gaston's photo, I thought the color was really nice. I basically take it as a jpeg, but are there any recommended color settings? contrast, saturation, sharpness, etc.
Great review, provided some unique insights for me. Now that the dlux has officially hit the market, I'm curious that with the latest firmware update does it capture that distinctive 'Leica look' ? From what I've seen, sample shots have a rather plain color, not much more impressive than m43 from panasonic. The weak bokeh also seems to dilute the Leica look. I am worried it does not make much difference from other lower-priced counterparts, and I think by using a compact camera most of us may expect its straight out of camera results, especially for Leica(though dng is a good plus).
Glad you like it no don’t believe in the Leica look most people edit their picture. And I’m able to replicate the look or color of a camera in post. The one thing that has a signature is the optical Leica look of vintage lenses. But modern lenses it’s hard to tell between a 50 f1.4 Gmaster or a Summilux 50 f1.4 2023 for example.
Thank you for this video. I happened to own the deluxe 7 model And considering the size of the sensor the quality is incredible Glad that like a is continuing with this type and adds additional features. Congratulations with the spots you picked in Zurich you hit the highlights of that city.
Hi, I was wondering about your thoughts on the final photo quality when compared with the Q2/Q3, as this camera seems to be aimed at these potential buyers! Tnx
Q3 has the more superior image quality and resolution. No question there. But the D Lux 8 has the upmost flexibility when it comes to focal length in a small form factor. The Q3 is not a pocketable camera. The D Lux can travel in a jacket or cargo pants no problem
Good review. I gotta few questions for you. 1. Will it fit in a pants pocket of a pair of Levi’s or cargo shorts? 2. How fast can you remove from a pocket (large enough to easily remove) and shoot? I want an every day carry but not hang on my neck. 3. How large a print, on tripod, without noticeable grain from 6’ viewing distance?
1- I don't know your pants size if you are a 32 like me I say yes. But I prefer to carry my cameras with a strap. 2- If pocket is not tight fast enough without dropping the camera. Always put a laniard 3- I have not print photos from it. But you should be able to obtain a nice image at 24-36 which anything about 10MP should print good.
For some, the camera's ability to use DNG is a key point. Do you know if modern software such as DxO PureRaw 4 or Topaz AI can process the D-Lux7 raw files to make it as good as the DNG coming out of the D-Lux8? Or does using that sort of software on the DNG files significantly improve them in terms of detail resolution etc?
When you shoot video, which ND filter have you used for D-Lux8? If you used variable ND filter, is there any interference to the lens automatic on/off?
Really good review - an excellent overview. It's maybe a bit ''spen and last-gen,' but I still think there's a lot to like here. For me this would be a fun, casual prop for occasions where a bigger or manual camera was inappropriate/inconvenient. Bigger sensor than an RX100; physically smaller than a X100; EVF presence over GR; cheaper, smaller, quicker than a Q3... It seemed to handle low light pretty well?
Thanks for your review. Your sample shots look very good. Given that it’s only a 17mp sensor, how much can you crop the image before it starts degrading? That would be my main concern (not that I ever to extremes!)
It all depends how large you want to print. But you can crop efficiently 25% more or less and you'll still retain details and probably get some decent prints. I wouldn't push it too much though
I'm not convinced that the images from this will that much better than an iPhone15 Pro Max shooting RAW. A little better? Depending on the subject and image, yes. But it's a hard sell for me. I'd step up to the Ricoh or the Fujifilm X100.
@@GastonShutters yes, it is pretty crazy. A few years ago this camera would’ve been a no brainer but 2024… it’s more of a fashion statement. Sure sounds like fun, though.
It’s capable. It beats the iPhone in the long end at 70mm but you you do be pressed to see the difference some times between the image of these new phone and some of these cameras. I wish that it was apsc. But the lens would’ve been huge. Apsc zoom and compact is almost impossible. Unless is a terrible aperture range.
@@GastonShuttersiPhone 15 Pro Max has 13, 24, 120mm lenses so the D-Lux 8’s 24-75mm (which sounds quite good for most things except ultrawide we’re spoiled with on iPhones) is between the iPhone’s focal lengths
In the end a photo is a photo. The camera is a tool. If the phone gets you in photography where you want to be so use an iPhone. As you can see in this video you can get decent bokeh wide open with the DLux 8 and it has a proper EVF something that the iPhone doesn’t and use a lot.
Can the format be set to 1:1, is there a multiple exposure feature and lastly this model seems to be a Leica upgrade version of the Lumix dmc lx100. After a number of years of use my Lumix lx100 started have dust issues due to the lens gaskets wearing out.
Yes you can setup aspect ration 1:1, I did not check multi exposure feature. It has some upgrades as new EVF, new Design, Touch new menus and Screen. Hardwre seems to be the same.
How can you compare this to the Ricoh GRIII and the Fujifilm x100V? Both of these got an APSC sensor and is either cheaper or at the same price. The D-lux8's got a micro 4/3 sensor from at least 6 years ago.
@@GastonShuttersok I get that the Leica has a zoom lens and the Ricoh doesn’t. But let’s talk image quality. I had the Panasonic version of the 7 and now have Ricoh GRiii. Frankly, the image quality of the Ricoh is superior. The 24 mp apsc sensor just delivers better quality than the 17 mp micro 4/3s. So there is a comparison- the zoom on the d lux vs the better image quality and lower price (not to mention IBIS) of the Ricoh
Yeah the image quality and lens quality of the Ricoh is outstanding. Not having an EVF is an issue for me on the Ricoh. But agreed. Sensor and image quality the Ricoh is top. But when I pic a camera to me the whole overall experience matter. Having an evf, a battery that last me for 3 hours non stop, zoom option, it’s I find the D Lux 7 a better companion 2nd camera than the Ricoh. That’s just personal preference.
I felt your informal but thorough style of review is spot on for this camera…I have used Leicas and one thing they did for me was to elevate my photography through great lens optics, and what I call ‘positive engagement’ ie the user experience is just a blast. So my question is does the D-Lux 8 do that for you?
Honestly, owning a Q2 and now Q3 this camera has a pseudo experience but the image quality and optics are not there. I don't see the leica optical look. For $1500 there are far more capable cameras today.
Hello Gaston, I'm a new subscriber and I enjoy your style and presentation. I'm a dedicated BNW Photographer using the Leica Q2 Monochrom camera. I do a lot of "Visual Note Taking" when I'm out without my Q2M using my iPhone XS Max to keep a record of potential shooting scenes to grab an image with location and time-of-day so I can back to a spot with my Q2 Monochrom. I'm really interested in this Leica DLUX 8 as an EDC to replace my iPhone that would ALWAYS go out with me in my man-bag to take "Visual Notes" and grab the occasional "target of opportunity" image. Lastly, I shoot my Q2M in full Manual mode...so what are your thoughts on the DLUX 8 as my Q2M companion?
The Q2M is great. I had the color Q2. Regarding the DLux 8 as a companion can be a great choice for the size. It all depends how large you need your files but for what you are describing it will be perfect. I can’t think of a better camera to be a companion of a Q2M if you want to stay within the brand. I really enjoyed the time with it. While it wouldn’t be replacing my full frame Leicas I can see this camera as an easier carry for certain situations
@@GastonShutters Many Thanks For Your Prompt Reply Gaston 🙏🙏📷‼️ The Q2M is simply the best camera I've ever owned for my BNW Photography shooting...and I've used Nikon, Olympus, Ricoh and most recently Fujifilm. As for "staying in the brand", the menu similarities and the focus on Photography fundamentals vs technological "gimmicks" which get in my way tells me Leica is my choice and the DLUX 8 is my way forward as the partner for my Q2M. Now...if only Leica would release more details on the new camera and it's full specifications 🤔🤔😎‼️
I think they may be loading the camera with more features than what I was able to test hence why there is not a full spec sheet yet. Leica Looks is probably one of the things they may be trying to incorporate. In fact a must if they attempt to compete with Ricoh and Fuji. I don’t shoot simulations but for that market I think this camera is intended is needed. Another thing that I want to see I proved in final firmware is the AF performance. It was decent but not solid. I did enjoy the camera and I will be getting it
@@GastonShutters Again, Many Thanks Gaston for your responses. I've heard that sales start on July 2...but it's unclear if that's retail or only pre-orders. If July 2 is beginning of pre-orders, we might not get the DLUX 8 in-hand until sometime in August😡😡. Also, I'm hoping to get clarity on what will be in the box with the camera and a battery...a hi-speed USB-C cable? The DLUX 8 version of the DLUX 7 auto-open, auto-close lens cap? SD Card? Wrist Strap?
Are those pics straight out of camera or is there a preset? I like the colors and to me looked very leica styled. I just bought the q2. Great videos by the way I’m a fan of your channel
Most of them are with exposure adjustment and white balance. Some others a bit boosted. I have a free preset pack on my Instagram link on my bio instagram.com/gastonshutters
@@GastonShutters could you compare the mechanical shutter sound to anything? The Q's are virtually non-existent with the leaf shutter. Same for GR3. The TL2 has a decent but quiet clunk. Thanks so much!
Hi. I definitely have a question. I've owned the D-Lux 7 for quite some time as my less serious day to day camera. I've been waiting a very long time for an upgrade on the D-Lux 7. No one has mentioned just how much of an improvement the D8 is from the D7. Any feedback would be much appreciated. Drew
Some have mentioned that Leica is doing this as a "cash grab," an ornament for TikTok-ers, or a gateway camera into the more expensive Q or M lines. I believe this camera is made for someone that wants portability, a zoom lens, and a unique minimal design. As for the red dot, everyone knows that all Leica cameras come with a "Leica tax" and some are more than happy to pay for it!
It has so much potential, but the sensor needed improving (why not the G9ii sensor then crop to circa 20mpx?). Still, it's fun. I climb mountains and I could imagine this as a lightweight travel camera. I have an old rx100iv and I'd hope this takes slightly better pics.
it is a really fun to shoot camera. But a crop M4/3 sensor in 2024 is kind of like a joke. This camera needed to be APSC but that would have made the mens bulky. At least a 35mm fix lens with an APSC sensor, a tilt screen and 40 10 bit 4:2:2. But we got non of that.
@@GastonShuttersif you compare the size of m43 vs canon aps-c, not much different and (for leica) hardly worth introducing a new sensor to their limited design resources - easier to do a cosmetic refresh on a lumix lx100m2. Biggest issue with this camera is not the sensor, but the fixed screen, poor 4k video with no stabilisation and out-of-date wifi. I own the lx100 since launch date so know this platform well. Great review, nicely presented. 😊
I love mine. I’ve been rocking my M11 Monochrom with my Apo 35mm and the D Lux 8 feels anything in between. It’s also my go to night photography camera on the go. The little flash is awesome.
Commentators keep on talking about how the sensor is 7 years old. That would worry me in one respect, low light performance. I am currently shooting with the OM-1 MkI and I can go right up to iso12800 and in post processing get very clean and usable images. So, the big question is: what is the IQ like on this camera and in terms of ISO how high would you shoot?
There is this notion that a sensor that was great seven years ago is not great seven years after. The Leica M8 which it was one of the first Digital Leicas. Still has one of the best sensors when it comes to color reproduction. A capable photography camera from 10 years ago still a capable camera 10 years after
@domipro123 same sensor same color. However now it has DNGs which may be slightly better to edit that RWL prior raw format. But didn’t notice anything. I think the Image quality was great to begin with on the DLux 7
Not sure I got it right, that you stated the D Lux-7 did only allow for shooting JPEG. You can switch to RAW even on that one. At least on mine. 🙂 Beautiful camera, even the D Lux-7. Used it a lot and took it for example to Iceland as my only camera. And got great pictures. So yes, MFT is a good choice for most people. Compact, easy to use and decent picture quality.
Ricoh GR iii can be had anywhere between 400 to 1100 on eBay. Used x100 series from Fuji also are available if you don't mind used items. If you need zoom, I would buy used Dlux from Leica as options as well
You certainly made some great images with the camera. They looked great. Probably a camera I would buy if money was no object. But there are better options for the same money.
Sadly these days just don't prefer anything made in china. Don't like the politics of financing things they're doing these days. Made in Japan was fine. Speaking as someone using Leica & panaleica ... Thanks for the video. Good as always
yeah i forgot to talk about that. But I have a follow up video wrapping up my conclusions.now that I'm reviewing more photos, and videos I shot with it. Ended up shooting close to 4000 images at the end of the day. And I have to admit that some of them are my favorite photos of the this trip.
I had the D-Lux 7 when it was launched in November 2014. Unfortunately, the Leica D-Lux 8 is a little disappointing compared to the D-Lux 7. You would have expected more technical advances, but the new features are hardly worth mentioning. Instead of real improvements, it seems as if a few steps have been taken backwards. Too bad, I had hoped for a real upgrade! And I can't see paying €600 more for it. You'd be better off looking for a Lumix 100 II. It can do the same. The only plus point would be the new “Leica Like” menu.
up to ISO 25600 pretty capable, even at night. Never found a situation where the noise made the image unusable. Check out the night shots included here
@@GastonShutters Not quite happy with how protruding the lens is but I think I can get used to it. The camera just makes you want to carry it every where you go and it´s lovely. I just wanted to see some pics on a computer screen and your video is the closest to it. Thanks for sharing.
The Leica website says they will be issuing a hand grip for the 8. Those caps that stay on are great! I wish they'd offer them in designs like my 007 camera.
I just looked around online - the DLux7 does shoot RAW. I think the file name is RWL, not DNG. My wife and daughter both own a DLux7, but I don't know it well enough. I shoot M11. For what it's worth.
The D-LUX 7 and D-LUX Typ 109 do capture RAW images, as RWL files, just as @joebrown479 said. The RWL files are quite flexible for editing in my experience. I honestly don't know if DNG will be any better in Lightroom.
Could be those files were too compressed still not as much info as on DNG. Me too. M11 all day long. Maybe m11 35 or 50mm and for everything else iPhone 15 🙂
It depends where you find value. There are going to be other cameras with much more tech but end of the day is the camera with the whole tech what are a looking for? What I mean by this is that we are at a level in technology where is difficult to find a camera that will produce a bad image. If this is the camera that inspires you to take more photos then the price may not be as bad but if you chase technology and a pony of many tricks then this camera is definitely not.
I remember when D-lux used to have ccd sensor, if they give us DL9 with ccd like full size sensor I will buy it in a heartbeat. Please Leica. Give us something that could compete with Fuji X100 or Rocoh GrD.
I agree that this camera can't be compared to the Ricoh or the Fuji X100. It has a zoom lens that the others do not. To me that is its only appeal over the other two. And to be honest, that wouldn't be enough for me to buy it over the Ricoh or the Fuji, especially the X100vi. Bigger sensor. Far higher resolution. I would have zero interest in this faux Leica.
Yeah, the updates are cosmetics mainly and the EVF but not enough in My opinion to charge 1600 for it. I'm working on another video with my final conclusions. Still going through photos and comparing photos that I tool with my iphone and this camera... I'll save that for that video.
This review should have been more brutal. The only improvements are superficial - making it look more like a Q3 on the outside and menus. The camera is compact… but only when turned off! The lens extension ruins the compact form. The video capabilities do not look great. Keep shooting with the M11, but use your iPhone for wider shots or video. The D-Lux 8 is strictly produced for novice photographers to suck them into the Leica ecosystem. Leica now has an app that makes your iPhone shots look more “Leica”. Will you do a review on the App?
I very much doubt you’ve used a previous model (d-lux 7 and previous to that) if you’re suggesting it didn’t have raw. It didn’t have DNG. Thats a huge difference and just makes me think you’re lying about your previous history with this series of cameras to be honest.
I meant to say DNG, the previous one had RWL which are heavier raw format and not as efficient for what I hear vs DNG. And yes I'm a camera junky so you can rely on that info.
I prefer the form factor to stay small while being better at low light than, cramming more MP. remember even with a M4/3 sensor the lens only covers a portion of the sensor making it effective 17MP out of 21MP and this is due to optical design, otherwise with an APSC sensor the lens would be huge and probably everyone will be complaining of that too. Photographers we are never happy....
For photography yes. But do your research on other offerings. You may want to start with a camera that you can put the lenses you want. Do your research to get the most bang for the buck
Would you consider Micro 4/3 in 2024?

Thanks man.
Did they say anything about improved weather sealing? Dust on the sensor was one of the issues with the LX100 series.
No news about weather sealing
Good video, thx.
Has the D-Lux 8 some Leica Looks installed, for example as the new Leica LUX app, especial in b&w?
It has the regular profiles like the vivid, high contrast monochrome, etc. No Leica looks
Always put a laniard
3- I have not print photos from it.
Good question, that I can't answer.
How does it compare to the sony RX100 series? Any preference between the two?
Rx100 more versatile with great video specs. This one is a better photo camera, better handling and battery life.
When you shoot video, which ND filter have you used for D-Lux8? If you used variable ND filter, is there any interference to the lens automatic on/off?
I don’t use The D Lux for video.
Low light did pretty good. Having a not too crammed MP helps with low light even being a crop M4/3
You didn't talk about the EVF. Does it reflect changes you make to exposure in real time and changes you make in shutter, aperture and ISO?
I did talk about it. these is a two part video, check the part one. Yes you preview live the exposure changes.
@@GastonShutters Thanks for replying! I know that different sensors may have different tolerances.
@BenSussmanpro You are welcome !
Good video ! The pictures that you showed are edited or straight out of the camera ?
Edited
For 17 MP the pictures seem really sharp it’s impressive
Yeah. I think less MP and good optics will always render an image sharper.
I'm not convinced that the images from this will that much better than an iPhone15 Pro Max shooting RAW. A little better? Depending on the subject and image, yes. But it's a hard sell for me. I'd step up to the Ricoh or the Fujifilm X100.
The new iPhone is great. Small sensor but the multi exposure that it does in camera is pretty impressive.
In my prior video and social media people asked me what I think of them. That’s why I said they cannot be compared. Fixed apsc vs zoom M4/3
@@GastonShutters Any suggestions for a more capable camera with a built in zoom lens?
Sony RX100 VII or VI
No clue. Wondering the same.
Id love to see photo examples compared between this and the ricoh gr iii
Good idea. Once I get my own copy I will do that
Is the shutter noisy or not ? Thank you for your reply. I'm with the Fuji X100V since 2020.
Not at all
@@GastonShutters could you compare the mechanical shutter sound to anything? The Q's are virtually non-existent with the leaf shutter. Same for GR3. The TL2 has a decent but quiet clunk. Thanks so much!
I wonder if the SD Card is UHS-II or just the plain UHS-I. Thanks!
I didn't check but it doesn't matter as the low size of files and weak video codec will not gain anything from faster read write speed.
Drew
Hey man please eche k out my three videos I tell you my experience regarding the new features and how it stacks up next to the D Lux 7
Hi, just tried it at the Leica store in Geneva, but I am still wondering if there’s a Lumix equivalent like the 7?
Hardware wise is the same. Software, screen, ergonomics, body and evf upgraded.
Would like to see how it will preform with the flash that come with the camera
I'll be testing that as soon as I can
I'm a very casual photographer who already has a C-Lux that I like quite well. Should I even think about the D-Lux 8?
Hmm probably not if you are still getting the reaults you need from it.
@@GastonShutters I'm pretty happy with the C-Lux, so I should probably just stop pining for the D-Lux 8. Thanks for replying. 👍
C lux is great
Some have mentioned that Leica is doing this as a "cash grab," an ornament for TikTok-ers, or a gateway camera into the more expensive Q or M lines. I believe this camera is made for someone that wants portability, a zoom lens, and a unique minimal design. As for the red dot, everyone knows that all Leica cameras come with a "Leica tax" and some are more than happy to pay for it!
I have to say that a better sensor, IBIS, Tilt screen and 10 bit video is a must at this price and age.
@@GastonShuttersin an ideal world, yes.
I am planning to buy 1 for my everest base camp trip. What are your opinions? Hope u still read the comments.
A capable photography camera from 10 years ago still a capable camera 10 years after
Did the IQ got better than the DL7 to the Lumix LX100II that I've? Wondering if upgrade is worthy?
Same great image quality I would say
@@GastonShutters So, no upgrade...
@domipro123 same sensor same color. However now it has DNGs which may be slightly better to edit that RWL prior raw format. But didn’t notice anything. I think the Image quality was great to begin with on the DLux 7
Any idea how to lock the focus square in the middle of the screen?
I believe you need to dissable touch. It recenters with double tap on the screen.
Not sure I got it right, that you stated the D Lux-7 did only allow for shooting JPEG. You can switch to RAW even on that one. At least on mine. 🙂
Beautiful camera, even the D Lux-7. Used it a lot and took it for example to Iceland as my only camera. And got great pictures. So yes, MFT is a good choice for most people. Compact, easy to use and decent picture quality.
I meant to say DNGs. Yeah the D Lux 7 supports RWL which are larger file raw formats

Hi! Can you recommend me a camera?
My budget is 100-400€
I'd like a compact camera, versatile to try and test what type of photography I like, thanks!
Best thing is to go on ebay and search the type of camera you are looking for. Fixed lens, Interchangeable lens, Fixed zoom,??
Ricoh GR iii can be had anywhere between 400 to 1100 on eBay. Used x100 series from Fuji also are available if you don't mind used items. If you need zoom, I would buy used Dlux from Leica as options as well
Thanks to both, guys 👍
Also a Sony RX 100 VII is an amazing camera with more resolution great video specs, tilt screen and mic input!
The only thing that is stopping me from thinking about upgrading to the 8 from 7, is the max shutter speed nerf from 1/4000 to 1/2000

My D Lux 7 shot RAW… I rarely shot JPG with it.
👍 I had the DL7 and I much enjoy the ease of use of the DL8
At least one feature I would miss on the DL 8, which is present on the DL-7, is the step zoom.

Doesn’t the DLux7 take RAW images? Were you saying the 7 only takes jpgs?
I just looked around online - the DLux7 does shoot RAW. I think the file name is RWL, not DNG. My wife and daughter both own a DLux7, but I don't know it well enough. I shoot M11. For what it's worth.
The D-LUX 7 and D-LUX Typ 109 do capture RAW images, as RWL files, just as @joebrown479 said. The RWL files are quite flexible for editing in my experience. I honestly don't know if DNG will be any better in Lightroom.
@@GastonShutters This is incorrect. The D-Lux 7 has raw files too. Just not in DNG format.

Q3?
For the price Leica asks for this DL8 I can buy 2! Sony’s ZV1..,24-70mm f1.8/2.8..
That’s true
I love the idea of it, but you just KNOW the D-LUX 9 will have phase-detect auto focus...
It’s not reliable yet. Very glitchy
Fix skip because only contrast detection no phase detection
I said “face” not phase. And did clarify that in the video.
I think you don't know what I mean, or you don't know what is PDAF
It’s been mentioned in the video that it’s only contrast based not Phase Detection.

17 megapixels in 2024? No thank you😂
I prefer the form factor to stay small while being better at low light than, cramming more MP. remember even with a M4/3 sensor the lens only covers a portion of the sensor making it effective 17MP out of 21MP and this is due to optical design, otherwise with an APSC sensor the lens would be huge and probably everyone will be complaining of that too.
