  • In this video I show you how to get to the inside of an office chair cylinder to lubricate the piston. Try this if your office chair still squeaks after trying everything I mentioned in Part I of the video.

    Don't use WD-40, it will just wash away the grease in the chair and will make it worst once the WD-40 dried up. Use grease instead.

    • @roidroid
      @roidroid 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      i used grease but it wouldn't penetrate into the piston. Perhaps use WD40, but *then afterwards put more grease (or a thinner oil) on.*

    • @dondave7219
      @dondave7219 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      @@roidroid Its not actually the piston that it is squeaking, its that rod and the bearings at the end that is causing it to squeak. That is where u need to put your grease. You need to extend that rod so that you can spread the grease there. As long as that piston doesn't loose pressure that piston is good. A minute amount of grease from the rod will eventually find its way inside the piston due to actuation from normal use.

    • @roidroid

      @@dondave7219 took the chair apart today. I'd actually been lubricating the spindle-guide & spindle, but this is indeed the area causing the "stiction" when it slides up/down (wasn't getting squeaking but i imagine it'll still be solved the same way).
      It's still a problem, today i tried automotive grease, then i tried a light oil, then i degreased it and applied Linox-Lanolin (that made it WORSE!).
      Spent the evening researching greases/lubricants & "plain bearings". I'm even starting to wonder if this is meant to be a dry bearing, it'll need more experimenting.

    Great tute. I used a synthetic grease (Super Lube) instead since typical WD-40 isn't good for that application. I tried it. Another SERP said to use a good synthetic grease. So after wiping the bearings, spacers and piston clean, I applied a liberal amount of Super Lube grease and now no squeaks and very smooth operation of a $5.00 Goodwill office chair. Thank you!

    Thanks! That was helpful. For better coating of the inner piston, pull/press the lever to extend the chair to full height - that allowed me to directly coat the inner piston rod (the tip of which is seen around 2:52).

  • @jackschnabel856
    @jackschnabel856 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    For people who this didn't work for, try proper automotive grease instead of oil. Fully extend the piston and apply a very liberal amount. Plain oil can often be too liquid and just run out and not stay in the needed spots.

    I initially tried wd40 and the suspension of my chair got even rougher.
    So I took the retainer clip out and removed the leg with the wheels like you showed in this video and realized that the gas spring is attached to the chair seat and contained in itself, and the gas spring's outer steel body rides inside a plastic bushing in the leg with the wheels.
    So I used wd40 to clean everything and wiped it and then applied silicone grease to the gas spring's shaft and it's outer steel body that rides in the plastic bushing and now my chair's suspension is much smoother.

    WD is not a lubricant! WD is a cleaner and it will displace whatever little lubricant was there in the first place.
    It will "lubricate" for as long as it's there but after a few days it will completely dry out. You should be using white lithium grease.

    Unfortunately the creaking of my chair seems to be from the stress of whatever the threads are embedded in inside of the base of the chair. I'm not sure why a metal plate isn't used here and instead threaded inserts into what appears to be wood. Over time I'm convinced this will fail catastrophically if that wooden board cracks to where the threaded inserts come out.

      @@deadpoolgames1 hehe, yeah... It happens. the button at the top of the cylinder is either being depressed and pressed or the cylinder itself is failing. If you don't use the up and down function of the chair you can try removing the handle that you would normally use to raise and lower it to see if that helps. Also, older chairs were attached to the seat in a manner that over time it is possible that the chair itself is hitting the button.
      At least I hope this is the issue.
      If the piston itself is failing you are kainda out of luck unfortunately. Although, chances are you can use the base and piston from any other chair that can safely attach to the seat you currently have. So you could buy a chair that is torn up, but has good mechanics underneath and swap it out.
