- Hey everyone!
Do you have some precious broken pieces of ceramic items lying around? Pieces that you struggle to throw away because of emotional attachment? If you do, then today's tutorial is perfect for you as we are diving into the world of DIY Kintsugi repair. We found a gorgeous bowl that we found at a thrift store, during one of our knitting cruises in Norway. Well, it ended up in pieces after a rocky night on our ship. But fear not, because a year later, our friend introduced us to Kintsugi, the Japanese art of golden joinery.
We got our hands on a kintsugi repair kit, and we're excited to give it a go. The kit comes with gold powder, glue, and all the tools we need to repair our broken ceramics. But it's not as easy as it looks. Mixing the glue and gold powder is a delicate process, and timing is crucial. We made a mess, to say the least!
Despite the initial challenges, we're determined to make it work. If you enjoyed watching us struggle (and hopefully eventually succeed), give this video a thumbs up and subscribe to our channel for more adventures.
Oh, and remember, everything looks better with a touch of gold! Thanks for watching, and we'll see you in the next episode. Bye for now!

I LOVE Arne's comment: "If this works, I'm gonna break a lot of stuff!"
🤣
I love this comment too!😂
Broken crayons still color
My favorite line❤️
I love how quickly arne went from excited to stressed in a matter of minutes. Who knew how tricky it could be to revitalise broken bowls. What a joy to watch! Hugs 💜
I am flashing back to the Dolly Parton Cake, but the gold powder is the cream.
😂
I am no longer worried about Arne going around and breaking everything
😅😅😅
You two are hilarious! This is why my husband and I never do this kind of stuff together. He has no patience at all and then I lose patience with him! 🤣🤣
I'm amazed that Arne has held onto a broken dish for years. God love him!
I'm not, lol
This was both exciting and terrifying to watch. Maybe peaceful zen will come when the glue dries completely. I am intrigued by the process!
It was a lot of fun!
This is Jan, Darlene is my mom.
I’ve heard of this practice. It’s the same philosophy with visible repairs of saris. These heirlooms and their histories are cherished rather than tossed away.
Some observations: it seems to me the “right amount” of gold/glue is essential. Then when you press the pieces together the “mortar” that squeezes out will leave a neat little line at the repair.
I would go to the thrift store and get the cheapest chipped pieces to practice on.
And since the “right amount” might be critical, start with cheap glue, about the same consistency as the real glue, with a dry colored powder stirred in. Lots of regular glue dries clear and this should be visible.
Then practice.
Sometimes I have luck applying the “right amount” of glue with a toothpick, dipping the toothpick into the glue and applying to the surface.
I thought this through because I have a small collection of broken tea cups and saucers that were my grandmothers. I would love to repair them with this technique.
Jan and Darlene in Oklahoma. We love you guys. Many thanks to Kate for introducing us. ❤
PS I think sanding will scar the finish so practice that on your thrifted pieces too.
Thank you Jan!
I’m so grateful to you both for trying something new for the first time, and sharing that experience with us. That said, I’m also sorry for the anxiety filming creates in addition to trying something new. I hope that you are thrilled with the results that you achieved off camera. The Staffordshire bowl is gorgeous! Wishing you well.
Agreed. Sometimes it might be better when trying something for the first time, to do so off camera if it helps. Then catch back up with youtube later on
Yes, please don't feel anxious because it's wonderful to see others 'figure things out' imperfectly, rather than the carefully curated 'perfection' we typically see in this social media world of ours. Keep up your lovely authenticity!
You brave souls doing this for the first time in front of an audience!!! But I love the concept - thanks for introducing us to this technique!
This was a great episode. I did learn a lot. The two of you always bring a smile to my face, and many time laughter. Thank you.
I love Arne's great-grandmother's plate - very pretty. You both always make me smile (and laugh).
You guys gave me anxiety with this one! LOL! Was talking out loud and telling Carlos to stop sanding!
Ok, this is the first episode that freaked me out. Did you hear me yelling “It’s 2-part epoxy resin. Wear a mask. Wear gloves. Watch a tutorial!” 😆😂🤣 I need to relax now. 😅 Bravest project ever ;) ❤️
I've been clenching my teeth the whole first half. Epoxy!!! Respect it! …And, YES, it SMELLS!
They had me freaking out also! As noted, mask, gloves, and a well ventilated area/room. More importantly, do not let it come into contact with food!
😍😍🎊
Oh my goodness - you two are AWESOME !!! I can’t stop giggling.
I thought that the black bowls were for the glue as they are small, better to hold while mixing. It was very funny to watch you😊
omg “this is so stressful” I laughed so much😂😂😂
😅
The love between you both is so heartwarming. xoxo
Nice William Morris curtains, huzahhhh!
Oh my gosh, now I don’t feel so bad about when my DH tries to repair the sink faucet, and he sends me scurrying for some tool he needs, and it’s not going well, and I get exasperated and say..” I TOLD you we should have just called a plumber!” 😂🤣🥰
🤣🤣❤️
This process reminds me of the Japanese art of Sashiko in which you repair holes or tears in garments with a special type of stitching and thread. Sometimes patches are stitched on using the sashiko technique. I think the philosophy behind the art of sashiko is the same as the philosophy behind Kintsugi. Beauty in brokenness.
Shashiko is easier. I was having a nervous tic. 😳
Perhaps this is a step on the path to Sashiko? I think Arne would instinctively be great at that? xx
Take a breath, I’m sure they will look stunning. ❤
You two are so sweet and I am still laughing out loud “with you” watching this video. We have all been there trying to do a project that is not as easy to do as originally thought. Carlos, your expressions were hilarious- trying to hold in your feelings lol 😂
I was really surprised that Arne hasn't used epoxy glue before. He's normally so capable with any DIY. Good episode.
Thank you!
May I suggest you do one broken piece at a time waiting 24 hours before adding the next shard. After glueing each section do not handle the object until fully dry to avoid shifting. Two part epoxy is a bear to work with, good job going for it.
👍🏻
I was VERY skeptical, but I looked up images and it's really beautiful! I like that perfection is the exact opposite of the goal.
When you look at that bowl from now on, you'll have the memories of this adventure! 😁👍
Thank you for that! That is very true😍
Heartfelt thanks for saving a beautiful piece of art.
Maybe the longer version is more zen. Love the idea of it!
Oh my....I laughed so much, until I became stressed for you!!😢 I hope that you were able to become Zen when the cameras were turned off!💖
Thanks Arne and Carlos! That was a nerve-wracking repair ! Omg!
They are lovely all fixed up!
Crumbs I can feel the stress. Thanks for the heads up on how stressful it can be, I might take my plate to a restorer now I've seen this
😎
Oh how wonderful! I applaud you for doing this in the first place and then for posting it. Arne's comments and Carlos's facial expressions had me laughing out loud. I have learned that even the "quick way" is difficult and takes practice.
This is a special technique that I’ve always wanted to see!
You're brilliant creative people. I love the way you're unafraid to try something new. It's inspiring for all of us. Thank you.
So Arne! Is this works I'm gonna break a lot of stuff! He is soo funny!
I’ve seen videos on this and always thought it’s pretty. Thanks for sharing.
You are welcome!
you two are very brave having a go at this on camera. I love how genuine you are and how you let us see all the difficulties - gives me hope! xx
Love you guys,…. Thanks for sharing! ❤
Pretty hilarious - it's the same as when you bake or craft, always sort of happy-stressful 🤣🤣🤣
It is a lot of fun.
That was fun to watch
That was wonderful! Everyone can identify with trying something new. Beautiful!
Zen? And then take a breath, what an experience...I was laughing [with you] so much. Talk about learning a new task, this was something else!!! Love ❤️ you guys. Can't wait for part 2.
Good for you guys to tackle this repair 😮.
Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching Arlette
This was so interesting and entertaining! It's a big relief to know I'm not the only one who starts something a lot more complicated than it looks 😊❤
We need to challenge ourselves Alicia!
Very nice epidode. Thank you Arne and Carlos.
Even more fun than watching you two cook! Oh, you made my day! 😍
I needed a good laugh today! Thank you
I so enjoyed watching you in this video!
We are glad you liked it!
This what I love about your adventures. No fear! You just jump in! Thank you for that!
You are welcome!
Super appreciate this episode! Loved watching you guys do it for the first time, like all of us struggling with it. So real! Was great! It’s hard to be zen❤
I just love watching you all, great sports! That would be stressful!😊
Love it, at least you’re trying to fix them. Can’t wait for the update later on. 😊
Once again thanks so much for the laughs you guys are hilarious and great to see a new craft 😂
I love you both so much. I was feeling anxiety today and watching this made me laugh. You brightened my day and lifted my mood. Thank you so much.
We are glad you are feeling better😍😍
Oh wow this has made my night 😅😅what lovely people you are 😊
I absolutely LOVE you two❤️. This video was wonderful. Good luck with the learning process and I can’t wait to see the next episode.
Thanks guys beautiful bowl...hope it works out great! Although I may have practiced before tackling the beautiful bowl and Arne's precious plate love you guys
Thank you!
Fabulous ❤❤
That was such a joy to watch. Thank you so much and I look forward to seeing the follow up. You've really inspired me to look into this further and give it a try 😊😊😊
I had heard of this, and watched a brief show on the telly about it. This gives me hope, as I can now imagine the rebirth of broken things. Thanks for your interest and sharing this.❤
Lovely episode. I look forward to seeing the end result.
This was terrific! Good attempt!
Carlos: "Oh, 24 hours." Cracks me up😂
What a great idea…you always find unique things. I have a broken teapot from my great grandmother that needs repair
Oh my, I think Arne may have just created a new business...may I ship my broken Royal Copenhagen plate to him? Bravo for a good first try guys...I actually like the little 'blobs' along the crack. Makes it look like molten gold! Well done!
Hi guys. What a beautiful bowl. So happy you could fix it. ❤
Thank you Blase!
You two are so dear!! I love watching you
Thank you!
Thanks so much for sharing your first attempt, brilliant and very brave! ❤👍from Somerset UK
Thank you Elizabeth!
In figuring things out, I am Carlos-'that booklet is for me', and my husband is Arne -'what's this for?" and tries to figure it out without reading the instructions first ;) Such a good combination when you work together. Also, I think this is such an honest video. People sell these kits and make it sound easy but spending money on something that isn't really simple doesn't make sense for many people, especially in this crazy worldwide economic crisis. Really glad you were honest and showed the reality of this kit.
😍
You're very brave to do that on camera. Good luck with doing it in private!
Thank you😍
What an exquisite way to “re-create” former treasures! I’ve always wanted to know how to do this. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching Robin!
I too am familiar with a “Mayumi” whom I once had the pleasure of seeing her play a storefront piano concert in San Francisco China/Japan town many years ago. I wonder is this the same Mayumi?! I still have her music to that day. Please respond if she’s a recording artist for Asian piano? That would please me so much to be able to connect in this way. And by the way, it was good to hear that you two were right here in Los Altos. I am a regular viewer of your videos weekly and soak up the comments you make on everything happy; my fav is the dollhouse and their fashion making. Thank you.
❤ you fellas are so lovely❤.. funny guys
My husband bought me teacups repaired using kinsugi years ago! Very cool that you got the kit. ❤ Also, nice haircuts! 💇💇♂️ 👌 looking gooood
learning the Zen of patience... a great video! ganbatte kudasai!
Thank you!
A beautiful bowl I ordered on ebay arrived sadly broken and my daughter (who loves all things Japanese) showed me photos of this technique. You're giving me the courage to give it a try!
You should, and a shame it broke🥲
Oh no...I'm sorry that I am laughing at your "misfortunes", but I never thought I could laugh so much. I'm sure you were using swear words in your head. I sincerely hope you mastered it off kamera.
Today's episode was truly "golden" 😉😉😉
Love you guys x
Thank you for watching Kim!
I’m surprised how fast the glue sets. If Arne goes around breaking things in the future we will see gold lines running through everything.😂
You guys are hilarious. I love you! It’s just like something I would do! I’m a teacher and I could imagine me going in and taking something like this so to show my students. It’s just amazing. It’s a great great idea. I watched someone do this on TikTok, I think on Quincy’s Tavern. It was very beautiful.
I think gluing activities should be solo activities in the future. But you did make me laugh!
Happy Sunday! I hated seeing that your beautiful Staffordshire bowl was broken. I am really bad at putting broken things back together, so I felt your anxiety. I hope the repair bonds the beautiful bowl and memories together as intended.
Have a wonderful week. Hugs to Freja! ❤️😘
So do we!
Interesting about this repair technique. I just finished watching the show "Killing Eve" on Netflix and in the very last episode, the main character, played by Sandra Oh, talked about this method of Japanese repair of pottery and its meaning! I'm sure the company got the idea from this show to make a version of this repair kit. I agree with Arne and bring the pieces in Japan for the authentic treatment! It is sort of link visible mending for pottery! Although, I think the product you bought is just regular epoxy glue with gold power that you can get in any craft store....I think you just leave the glue with gold visible and you just don't wipe anything down. I hope it wasn't a lot of money, but the whole process was so entertaining! This was funny!
We are glad you liked it!
"It's not as easy as we thought." If I had a nickel for every time I've said that, I could travel around the world! It is so encouraging to see you two experiencing the same frustration. I hope you continued to experiment and were completely successful in time.
🤣🤣
Oi joi joi, that’s what I say too. Arne and Carlos, you both are FABULOUS ❤️🤣
Thank you😍
I couldn’t stop laughing at the reparte… “Put in more glue. “ “No.” “Oh, that’s too much.”
oh my goodness! kudos for trying something the first time! Rather stressful yet funny to watch 🤪😂😍
It was a lot of fun!
Your DIY repair was so much fun to watch!
I hope you have other DIY’s to video!! 💕😉
We have also done many before. Check out our channel site😊
@@ARNECARLOS thank you…I didn’t think to look in the past videos. 💕
Oh my gosh! This reminds me of you two baking together. 🤗
😅😅
You are so brave for trying this while being filmed. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you for watching!
You guys crack me up. Sorry for your stress, but thanks for the good belly laugh.
I totally love this repair method of saving an item so beautifully! I to am imperfect and accept myself and others for who they are. Love this program!
Thank you Paige!
Lol! Im cracking up 😂
Funny🤣
You both are hilarious. I can't wait to see if the gold glue worked.
I have a childhood memory of my father repairing broken pottery using a special glue for ceramics. Sorry I don’t know any specifics: I was young. But I remember that my father was patient and good with his hands and the repair was successful. It held and the glue dried invisibly. You had to look very, very closely to see the original break. I’d be looking for a similar glue to use instead of the gold stuff. IMHO.
It remembers me so much to Your making of the gingerbreadhouse - poor boys! The idea of sandpapering the golden lines is so cracy and even the porcellan....
😍
I got a kick out of this!
Que lindo y que paciencia para repar esa loza hay que tener toempo😢🇺🇾🙌🏻
Another adventure with Arne and Carlos! Ooh, I was stressing out with you! My rule is to read the instructions completely before starting anything. IMO, start putting the small parts together first, then you have the larger pieces to assemble later. I hope it went better off camera. It is a lovely idea to repair broken china and keep it's usefulness. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for watching!
Arne is having gingerbread house flashbacks….😂❤
🤣
I’m so glad you figured out how to remove the epoxy from the places you don’t want it to be. My husband once used a small ceramic bowl that a friend made for me to mix his epoxy in and it ruined it. But now I will try using sandpaper and maybe I can reclaim it!
We hope so!
