    Having owned both the 230 and performance (230 for about 12k more miles and both a manual gearbox) I will always say the performance spec is the one I would go for, It just has more of a presence about it and just leaves you with more of a smile, which at the end of the day is priceless in itself.

    I have an Octavia VRS 245 Estate which is the same setup as the GTI Performance. Obviously not quite as quick and nimble as the Golf due to it's size but it's genuinely all the car I will ever need. Masses of space for the kids, wife, dog and all their stuff. More than quick enough and handles well for such a practical car. 40MPG if driven sensibly and circa 300BHP with just a remap.

    My Mk 7.5, 3-door, very low mileage Performance was replaced by a Mk 8 Clubsport in March. It wasn’t until the Mk 7.5 went that I truly realised just how connected I’d become to it. We could do anything together and the car was admired by everyone. I love owning my new Clubsport, but wonder if I’ll ever have the same connection. Loved all the many Golfs I’ve owned over the years, the 7.5 Performance was however, something special.

    I have a 2019 GTI PP and one of the few options missing is DCC. After driving one with DCC on the standard wheels though I couldn’t really see a difference compared to the passive damper car. Both had 18” wheels (Milton Keynes & Seville). Maybe it’s only really a worthwhile option if you’ve got 19s 🤷‍♂️

    Don't forget the 7.5 has a GPF, not quite as critical as the DPF but still kicks in now and again if making lots of short journeys. A way to tell if it's kicked in is, you get a real hit on mpg, the fan runs on when parked up and there is a different tone of engine/exhaust noise and feels slightly sluggish. The fuel line rattle is/can still be a thing though but easily remedied with. some cable ties. VW have worked wonders with the exhaust tone though (not the Soundaktor btw) and I often get asked if I've got an aftermarket exhaust fitted ( I haven't). I had the Mk7 and foolishly sold it to buy a BMW X1, I then sold that and bought the Mk7.5. If I was to change though I would seriously look at the newer Polo GTI...

  • @BobK5
    @BobK5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Fab video, nailed it with ‘the perfect car’ and ‘classless’. Although ‘perfect’ there are a couple items that are annoying.
    With the DSG box in manual the horrible ‘kick down’ still operates even when you’ve already selected your desired gear, it’s crazy.
    Water runs off the roof and comes into the cockpit when the doors are opened.
    One last big problem especially for 7.5 performance dsg, dcc, dyn audio, sun protection, is that there isn’t anything around you can move on to without losing something.
    I did one of those Supercars days, spent all day driving around a track in Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Nissan Gtr, Audi etc which was great, got back in my 7.5 performance and knew immediately that it was the best drive of them all to me.
    A helpful video would be to find and show another VW that model that could replace the 7.5 performance because I can’t see one.

    Very good comparison. I had a 2017 GTP PP 5-door manual back in 2019, for some reason I didn't gel with it at all, I came from a BMW E39 M5 so the Golf didn't feel fast or anything special at all at that time so I sold it shortly after, NOW tho they seem like a really good upgrade from my current UP GTI which I absolutely love, problem is that a low milage well specced PP is as or if not more expensive to buy now than they were as 2 year old back then.

    Nice video. Good to see comparisons like this. I actually like 3 doors on the sporty Golfs. Having had a MK7 R 3dr DSG I think the GTI looks sportier than the R but the move to 5 door only was not right. I understand it’s a family car but there are also singles/couples who like them. The MK7 R and 7.5 Golf R were very stealthy and looked very plain. I now have a MK7 7.5 GTi Performance (5 door) and I love it. It’s nowhere near the league of the old MK7 R on performance but I think it’s very well balanced in terms of fun, practicality and economy. I have been looking around as mines 5 years old now and I honestly can’t find a new car I’d want to replace it with. It’s also a White Silver which is a great colour. I’m not really tempted by the Mk8 due to the internals and lack of tactile interface. I think if I was getting a MK7.5 GTI Performance I’d try to get dynamic chassis which I don’t have.

    The 230 version is cheaper than the performance model I’ve seen a few for sale for only £22k where as the performance pack your looking at £26-30k depending on mileage. I wanted a performance one in black like the one in this clip but couldn’t find one & got inpatient & got a GTD mk7.5 Dsg with the Brescia wheels that looks exactly the same as performance model in this clip apart from twin exhaust. Great comparison, really riveting! Next step will be to try both cars with 18" alloys to see if DCC really is needed 😆

      @Pkari ปีที่แล้ว

      @@volkswizard My take from living with the 245 GTI mk8 (18" no DCC) and Cupra Leon VZ 300 (19" with DCC) is that DCC is still worthwhile but not if it has to break the bank.
      The GTI was much less harsh in town than the Cupra in comfort mode (especially with tires aired down slightly which I can risk with 18s but never with 19s).
      However, with DCC set to softest (individual mode) in the Cupra 19", the ride is significantly softer than in the Golf 18".
      That said, the 18" no DCC ride was definitely good enough for my daily, it's absolutely not a deal breaker.
      I would not be happy with 19" no DCC because after a year with the Cupra I still find myself switching to individual mode around town thanks to tram tracks and manholes, I have set DCC to softest in this mode.

    Fuel economy I'm sure is decent

    I drove a DSG 230 as a loaner a few years back & I was left somewhat disappointed. The chassis was decent but the DSG-box mapping was insistent on changing-up SO early in the rev range (even in sport mode!). Great in our 7speed GTD, but I felt it really dulled the experience & fun in the GTi, because it became very all or nothing
    To extend it & be able to drive swiftly & progressively I had to use manual mode.
    I think a manual mapped performance would be a much better proposition- diff & nearly 300hp…

      Knowing VW there is probably a cost saving too but emissions is highly likely to be part of it. Why else with Mk8 when emissions testing had calmed down and the new Gen 4 engine was more efficient and cleaner would they go to 235 35 19 on the optional 19x 8J rim for the Mk8 GTI base model which has 245 PS just like the 7.5 GTI Performance?

      The bad news Butch is that the 7.5 suffers from the same water pump BS of the Mk7. So far it appears the Mk8 is better (but has it's own set of well documented issues). The actual platform of the Mk7 and Mk8 is not that difference (MQB vs MQB Evo) but VW will have no doubt made refinements (and cost savings) to the newer car which will make it better and cheaper to manufacture. Obviously the infotainment on Mk8 is far more advanced and when it actually works properly will be a massive step forward.

      Ahh well tuning changes everything and definitely worth starting with PP or even better, a Leon Cupra 280/290 which has the stronger EA888 engine to start off with. Only GTI to get it was the Clubsport/Clubsport S and TCR which are quite a chunk more expensive. You also get DCC as standard with Cupra 280/290 and if you are lucky bucket seats and 380mm Brembos as well as standard VAQ diff of course,

    Being a MY19, with the DKTB engine (same as this one), it has the GPF. I guess it doesn’t sound as nice as a non GPF model and probably it should also be slightly down on performance, even thought they state the same power and torque figures.

Not got the car brand new but it was specc'd well and bought it just before Covid hit in 2020. I do think as a daily driver the 230hp variant is enough for usuable power. I find it safer to quickly match the speed when merging on to faster roads and perform overtakes when the timing allows. Also added benefit as a non PP owner I only just have the DSG service to worry about next, no LSD service 🙂 I was looking at performance packs back in the end of 2019 but it was a stretch out of budget. Probably was fetching today's Mk7.5 Golf R money at the time which was too much for me, to buy and then run. Great video

    Was the performance equiped with the particulate filter? I understand the exhaust system was adapted on the opf cars to get back some sound.. I’ve heard from other people that because of this the gti’s with opf actually got a bit louder than the non opf cars.
    I drive a manual 7.5 gti performance manual with passive suspension, a manual gearbox and 18” wheels. I must say 18” does make a big difference in terms of comfort. I really love this setup on my car, whereas on 19” it did loose a lot of compliance. Tyre pressures are as ever very important aswel in this regards.

    • @volkswizard
      @volkswizard  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Alexander. That's a very good question re OPF, I think the Performance car must have been equipped with one. Weirdly both had clean exhaust tips which I put down to the OCD previous owners as the 230 would have been too early to have one. You are spot on re OPF being louder, so many people assume that the cars are quieter with an OPF but it's all down to exhaust tuning, some manufacturers just added OPF and the cars were quieter but VW seemed to see them as an opportunity to make the cars louder, maybe louder means less Co2? I had 70 reg Golf R from new and I couldn't believe how loud it was, pops and bangs too!
      18s suit the UK roads, just wish the factory wheeks were a 1/2 inch wider to fill the arches. You got that with the 19s on Golf so it can be done but VW think buyers will pay for 18 to 19 upgrade but not 7.5 to 8J on 18 inch wheels.

    Here in the US, the performance pack became std in 2019. The car is rated at 228, but the car does not require premium fuel. My guess is on 92+ octane, it makes the 240 number they quote for UK PP GTI. Can anyone verify?

      Mind if I help out here with the fuel grades from US to Europe 🙂 Roughly speaking US 92 (AKI) grade is the UK & Europe is 97 (RON) fuel, our better fuel. @kingjaf @volkswizard. The US uses regular/ premium grade terms as is such a large place and the fuel blends are different at sea level to the mountain regions but adjusted for altitude to have the same anti knock levels. I used to work in a oil refinery and worked on Analysers that checked the batches of fuel (the clever people worked out how to blend the different elements to make Petrol/Gasoline/ Motor Spirit )

    • @jmc4975
      @jmc4975 ปีที่แล้ว

      I always use the 2nd tier 89 over here. I was worried because the octane rating for fuel is done differently over here than the UK. For example, octane 90 US is the same as octane 95 UK. So 89 is roughly the same as 93/94. I haven't noticed a difference personally though but premium fuel is cheaper than using fuel additives.
      I think most performance numbers they produce are with the fuel that's recommended in the handbook.
