- In this episode of People's Party, Talib Kweli and Jasmin Leigh sit down with rapper, singer and record producer JPEGMAFIA. As one of the most uncompromising and unpredictable figures in hip-hop today, we knew that Peggy would keep it 💯. The wide-ranging conversation includes his early years growing up in Flatbush, Brooklyn, and his move to Alabama at age 13, where he experienced overt racism. The trio also tackles gentrification, Ice Cube's unflinching approach to reckoning with racism, the punk/hip hop connection, and the right of artists to control their public image once they've paid dues. JPEG also gives his take on Kanye's support of Trump.

Mieli Stevens I kinda disagree with the people listing obvious gore classics in the replies. Like duh obviously a gruesome violent title would weed certain people out. I think if you look at a band like cannibal corpse, they had fun with the controversy and were obviously into horror themes and shit, it doesn't seem to me like those first bands were trying to intentionally gate-keep their music; though it did have that effect. Some of the other examples listed in the replies I would consider to be deliberate controversy, which just isn't genuine or interesting in my opinion. If you really wanna talk about gate keeping titles, you could site pretty much any counter culture shit ever. Mozart had a song called Lick Me in the Ass. Only discovered JPEG recently but honestly he's become easily one of my favorites to the point where I, who usually just stays home and enjoys my cheap audiophile set up and hates crowds, want to see him live. Seeing him interact like this with Talib just felt so sincere and true, and as controversial as his opinions might be, I found myself aligning with them more than not. Was sad to see Hasanabi get banned as he was going to have Peggy on and I really wanted to know more about JPEG's political ideology, but this interview gave me not just that, but also a look into someone who seems like a really nice, genuine guy. All that while having a great time!

This interview right here is why I love JPEGMAFIA and I found a new love for Talib Kweli, I've never heard of him before in my hole life, but seeing and hearing what he has to say is so real, I love interviewers that keep it so real, the fact that this interviewer said more truth than most people I have so much respect for, Talib Kweli isn't just an interviewer, he's an artist interviewing an artist, not just a random person that doesn't now shit asking random famous person !

23:50 This whole conversation reminds me of The Cure during 1982. Robert Smith was at his breaking point because of his depression, had a fight with his band mate Simon, and went straight back home in May.
Then his father convinced and pressured him to finish the tour because thousands of fans had bought tickets to see the band. So he endured a few more weeks of shows before the tour ended in a huge mess on June 11.

@Umrann Syed Yeah man, Lol was still in the band. He was a bit of an observer watching their relationship deteriorate, although he had his own issues like his mother dying in 1981.
The reason why they got into a fight was because Simon was pretty much, according to Robert; Becoming really arrogant and the stereotypical rock n’ roll archetype he hated. Could be because of the drugs, depression, or exhaustion from touring 1981 and recording Pornography, but that’s pretty much how it went down.
Like they were at a bar in Strasbourg and Simon was berating this bartender over a drink, so Robert told him to shut up. Then he punched the shit out of Robert and they started going at it. Which was the climax of The Cure’s early days and led to Simon leaving the band for two years, and Robert Smith getting deeper involved with Siouxsie and the Banshees. Lol also stopped drumming, and switched to keyboards.
In other words, everyone was a big mess by 1982.

He’s one of the best active artists in rap right now. His sound is so unique and boundary pushing, it may put you off at first, but trust me it’s definitely worth putting in the time to re-listen and understand. His music is amazing and he’s easily one of the best artists in the field right now.

That was the most casual yet eventful and insightful interview I have seen lol
I really appreciate Peggy and Talib and all them, and I agree with them on a lot. That last part had me with mixed feelings tho, cause I get the sentiment. Sometimes it's necessary to give people hope even when the system's not designed for a lot of us to win. But at the end of the day we need to acknowledge that no matter how much work you put in, it's extremely unlikely that you will actually see the full fruits of your labor and you will die never seeing it. That's why the system needs to change. We might not see it in our lifetimes but it's still important to work on it cause that's what activists have done throughout all of history. Many have died never seeing what they hoped for, even when it was realistic, but many years after they died, things did change for the better because of the work they put in. Anyway, I'm still inspired by this whole thing and all yall
