That was a wonderful hour Stuart, it is great to see the painting come together.
Your explanations and reasons are spot on.
As I am in my eighties I haven’t got time for excruciating fine art and detail surrounded by rules. Stiff joints and trembling hands lend a surreal visionary appearance to my efforts but that is part of the fun.
    Keep up the good work.

Goed morning Stuart, as always a pleasure to hear you talk while you do your beautiful job. About water soluable oil paint: I use Cobra artist quality and I absolutely love it. I use it it straight out of the tube and if I want to thin it I use the painting medium designed for it, put something in a very small bowl and mix it with water, till I can get the paint to thin the way I want it. In between I can wipe my brush like you do and if I need to clean it more, I just rinse it in water. To clean the brushes after finishing I use dishwasher. Paint and brushes are workable the next day without any cleaning of brushes.

Thank you, Stuart, for another wonderful video! Especially loved watching you work with the palette knife on the sky. And never tire of watching you create the illusion of a detailed landscapes through wiping and adding blobs. You make it look easy! (Another illusion!) Your videos are always inspiring and encouraging. Two years since I spent a delightful 5 days in your studio. How lucky I was to have that experience before traveling became so problematic. You are so generous with your time and knowledge. Just want to express my deep appreciation for these helpful videos.

Subscribed the moment I found your, erm, channel. I'm a prolific painter of acrylics because of the cooler temperature here in Bolton, Lancashire and it gives good drying & blending time. Maybe one day I will erm, branch out and try oils, recreating the tonalism on the moors around me here. Thank you for your innovation, time and teaching techniques. Inspiring!!

Great video as always. I have been streaming your videos since I first discovered them a few weeks ago and I have spent hours every day doing so. I love your approach of developing new and as yet undiscovered species of trees and bushes. I recently applied it to a painting I was doing using your technique I painted some very interesting bushes that I must have seen in an old Star Trek episode where they beamed down to a newly discovered planet filled with strange plant life. If what I painted resembles anything on earth it is by accident but in any case it looks pleasing to my eye and I guess thats what really counts.

Hello Stuart! I’ve recently discovered your videos and am so thrilled to find an artist who paints the way I feel drawn to paint. Freely and however it wants to turn out. I’m still very much a beginner (only 4 months in with oils and 9 months in total if you include the acrylics I no longer touch since starting with oils), so I’m still working out a lot of little things. Such as when to stop going over with the big brush. My latest painting is too soft/blurry. Oops hahahahaha. Anyway, I’m commenting about the water mixable oils. I predominantly use Winsor & Newton water mixables. There is no huge difference other than a minor change at the molecular level that makes it so the oil and water can mix. Now having said that, for the longevity of the painting (and as recommended by Winsor & Newton) water isn’t ideal for all the thinning etc achieved with thinner or mediums. It is just water after all and dries differently than mediums and oil. So it’s still advised that you use proper mediums and thinners. They do have a line of mediums for their water mixables, which really should be a hint that they are still needed, rather than just water. I use them so I can rinse off my brush with water instead of thinner. Due to that it keeps the amount of thinner I go through quit low since I only need to use it for thinning paint while painting. Otherwise, I treat them just like normal oil paints. I have regular oils as well, and truly don’t see much of a difference other than rinsing between colours without thinner. So I tend to reach for the water mixables because I’m lazy and don’t want to bother preparing thinner and dealing with that hahahaha Unless of course you don’t want to rinse your brush between colours. 😉
I’m hoping to go back and fix my blurry mess soon. Thank you for providing content for those of us who wish to paint freely.
