Great info. You led me to the cause but I used a different fix which restored full operation. That little tubular white nylon piece was still in the door behind the inner panel. I drilled it and tapped it thru for a 6-32 screw. I them put it in position and installed a pan head 6-32 screw. The head of the screw replaced the flat nylon head which had broken off. I jammed a screwdriver against the white nylon piece to prevent it from rotating as I tightened the screw. It’s possible that the screw could loosen over time so I’ll open it up in a year to see if needs to be snugged up. Now the power lock works, the child lock works, inner and outer handles work.
Bad original design. If that nylon piece had been made out of brass we wouldn’t be having these unpleasant discussions.

Thanks for the great video. I was able to fix my van door after years of not using it. Instead of a zip tie I replaced the plastic piece that works the lock system with a small #10 bolt/screw with a thin washer screwed into a steel/metal screw rivet. I cut the screw to proper length. I put the rivet/ sleeve into the arms which works with the slide lock and screwed the #10 screw (ground down the screw head to make thinner) and the thin washer into the rivet. I made it look like the broken plastic piece. I only had to take a few of the levers/springs off and two handle bolts to gain access to do the job. I can now work the door from the inside or outside and the lock works as normal. Toyota should have used metal in the first place instead of plastic. I had to look at the other side door to see how the lock system works and was put together.

      Adam,
I took the whole lock assembly out so I can work on it in my shop. Rather than replace the plastic part with a screw rivet and screw, it looks like the plastic part that couples the child safety lock to the lock assembly is the same part as the trouble piece that we are trying to replace. It obviously has no wear because we never change the position of it. The problem is I still have not figured out how to take the lever arms off so I can get the bad part and the good part out (so I can swap it in).

I had the same issue but I reused the old plastic piece, drill a hole and put screw on it. If it fails later, I will try your fix. Thanks. Same thing, I have to check the other side to figure out what it looks like.

My locking mechanism bound up inside the door with it closed so we couldn't open the door to access the screws to take it apart. Seeing this video showed you could pry it open and peek inside. I was able to open it like you did. Once the door was open and I could take the screws off to access the door it was an easy fix. Probably saved me hundreds of dollars by not having someone overcharge me for a simple fix. Thanks for the video!

Thank you so much!! My cables on the passenger side died year ago. The dealer cut the cables so the door could be used manually. My driver side slide door has been stuck shut for yearrrsssss!! I'm so grateful just to find a way to open the door. The dealer couldn't even tell me how to yearrrrrrs ago! Thank you! thank you! I'm going to attempt the project of replacing the cable assembly on my own

I just bought a 2006 Toyota Siena for cheap, planning to turn it into a camping van. Neither of the sliding doors work, folks we bought it from shrugged and said, we just quit using them.
I got the passenger side open, gonna use tie wire I think rather than plastic zip ties, but, yay!
    Thanks!

Hero! I've been playing off the fact that my kids couldn't open the door from the inside for months by acting like I was their chauffer opening the door for them, etc... But when the exterior latch stopped working... having them crawl out the front was too much. I was close to scraping the van but found your video. Thanks a ton. I went top notch ghetto and used 3 zip ties!

Thanks so much for this very useful video. When the door broke I was pretty worried because when I popped open the panel I couldn’t understand what was going on there. After watching you video I had it fixed in about 15 min. Amazing video and really helped me a lot.

My 2006 Sienna looks a little different inside but I had the same symptoms (inside handle not working but outside handle working). Turns out nothing was broken but I believe the child-protection feature (preventing passengers from opening doors or windows) was not reset properly. The inside handle lever was disengaged from the plastic piece it was supposed to "push" to engage another lever. I moved the plastic piece back into the correct spot and now everything works great!

Thanks for posting this and your insight. You are a smart man. I replaced my lock assembly on my 2004 about 4years ago with a new and upgraded one. Seems Toyota knows that plastic slider is a weak spot as the new one had metal. To change out the lock mechanism is a pretty big job. Took me about 4 hours as the window, trim and lots of parts must come off to replace. The part cost $130 IIRC. Last week my door started giving me problems opening again. After watching your post I tore into it again-only taking off the interior lock trim. Looking over the issue, I did not find that the new lock assembly had broken again. Looking way up I saw that both of the upper cables were not seated in their proper slots. You have to push really hard to get them to fully seat. Since I did the change, this was my mistake. Putting the cables back into their respective holders and pushing hard on them got them seated better and the door works perfect again. Well, not perfect-the cables have been broken on the auto opener for about 6 years but the doors open easy by hand and I have never fixed this issue. With 400,000 miles on her it really does not make sense to fix. Thanks again for your posts.

I have a 98 and have had so many issues with the doors! Replaced the liftgate latch in 2016 and it doesn't work now (2023). Replaced both front door interior door handles, drivers exterior door handle (very difficult job), drivers back sliding door exterior handle, and have repaired the door mechanisms multiple times on both rear sliding doors! One of which needs repair again. The motor is solid at 180k miles.

Thank you so much! This totally worked on my 2009 Toyota Minivan. Same assembly. (I used girl tools--a cuticle pusher to pry them both out--because all my screw drivers were to big, and a really skinny crochet hook to pull the zip tie through!). I had watched a whole bunch of videos--you are the winner! Thanks again for the huge money saving tip!

  • @SarahPoulin

I just fixed mine today, and saw this video afterwards. I got really lucky and most of the white bushing was still there. The problem was that the flat top of the bushing was broken off. It was still there, but stuck in behind in the grease. So then I drilled a small hole into the top of the bushing, and used a computer screw to go through the flat top, and secure the flat top into the bushing. That allowed the original bushing to then still engage the mechanism, AND I can still lock/unlock it with the sliding bushing (I call it a pin). You might also be able to make your own bushing using some washers on both sides, some nuts, and a screw, and just kind of sandwich it all together.

Thanks for the video!! although I didn't have your problem - (my cable broke but I hack-sawed off the hinge and pulled the cables out to make it a manual door) - the inside handle wasn't working and after I opened it up and watched your video I figured out that the metal little "L" feet had flipped to the wrong side - I used a screwdriver and popped them back and "bingo" - everything is working again - like a manual door - all the girls are super happy with me! Thanks!

This video really helped to understand the mechanics of how the door opened and what exactly was broken on my van. My door handle opens the door now, but this fix caused to lock to stop working.
    Maybe I missed something, dunno?
However, it's the only video that addressed my problem exactly and I'm thankful for that!

  • @GabrielLabrecque

Thanks a lot for the video. I had the same problem on my 2006 sienna with electric doors. After investigating my own door mechanism, I found the tiny white plastic thingy was still there but it didn't look exactly like yours. Comparing YOUR white plastic thingy on the good side and MY own bad plastic thingy, it looks like the white cap on top fell off but there was still a white plastic thingy inside. I assume a good white plastic thingy has a dumbbell shaped but mine lost a "weight" on the top side and the "bar" was showing excessive sign of wear. The "bar" is what hold the two metal parts together which unlock open the door like you showed in your video. I simply pushed the top metal part towards the other one with my screwdriver to reduce the distance between the two metal parts so that the white plastic dumbbell thingy would stop slipping off. I now have a door working just like a new one.

maybe living on borrowed time and thanks so much as i too had this problem and have since resolved. As in above i too still had the white disc as described at 3:44 in the video but yet the door would not open. I pushed the disc down as far as it would go and no benefit. I then pushed the disk up as far as it would go.. and problem solved.
fingers crossed and hope it stays put
