  • WAY OVER 10 minutes 😂 my B
    If you have a antique mortise lock or a Baldwin Estate mortise lock and your brass or glass door knob or lever handle keeps coming off or slipping here are some suggestions for repair!
    Thanks for watching my newest 10 minute video 😂 If I can help with one of your issues, let me know
    PS FYI: I want to point out, on the half spindle that uses the screw to hold in (the one I tried wacking in with the screwdriver), the spindle actually inserts from the inside until it "bottoms out" and then you tighten the screw down on the outside. I realized it after the video so ooops :)

    This video is masterpiece of the form. It's a work of art that I could watch over and over again. Seriously, it's something special. And yes, it helped me put my new spindle and my door knob back on. Blessed relief! Thank you so much. I also thought a new spindle would be a hard to find, rare item. Nope it's down at the hardware store for $8

    After 2 years of dealing with a door knob that would end up in your hands instead of staying put on the door, your video explained the method to reinstall the split spindle and explained how it operates. The old brass door knob is finally fixed. Thank you!

    Took me awhile to find this video, but it solved my issue with a glass doorknob that kept getting loose and falling off from the other side of a thumb push lock. THANKS!!

    Thank you so much - you saved my antique door lock! I did not know how to place (or hook) the separate spindles (with holes) back together and place in a knob with one screw. That and the fact that the screw was missing was the only issue - I now have a 1928 lock that works!

    Great video Jason, really appreciate your covering all the types of spindle; so many videos just talk about whatever type is on the lock they have in front of them, but not any others. Thank you! 😊

    Thank you for the video! Very helpful. I have one further issue I was hoping would be covered. Got my loose doorknob back in but now the buttons for the lock/unlock on the inside of the door don’t work quite right. In “auto lock” mode the inside knob won’t turn at all now. Have to leave on “unlock” Any advice would be appreciated on reengaging the button feature!

      If it’s doorknob/lever on both sides the screw spindle is not aligned properly. One or the other knobs is screwed in too far.
      Where the spindle screws together in the middle has to be centered in the lock otherwise it will do what’s happening there. One side or the other has to be loosened and the other side tightened

    Thanks for making this - it's really helpful. I have a very old front door with an equally old Sargent Co. mortise lockset. I want to replace the exterior hardware and lock cylinder, but the actual mortise lock is in excellent shape. Any advice on finding matching hardware without having to replace the mortise lock itself? Thanks!

    Great video Jason. Are you familiar with lever ceased/frozen handles on spindle? Exterior door. It's a 3 point Marvin, yet the issue is i cannot get the levers off, set screws out. The loose handles are stuck to the spindle, and from research they are not threaded. Ant miracle ideas? I'll try a C-Clamp tomorrow to such them together, hoping to break the lever stuck to the spindle? Rob.

    Watching the video I discovered that I could repair my baldwin lock. The split spindle (with the 90 degree end piece) is worn out. It works for now. I would like to get a replacement.

      Lynda Gragg many ACE hardware stores with a good selection of screws may have a pull out box with spindles in it and one of the choices is a split spindle. Might want to check if you have a ACE close by :)

    What if you have a handle that has come away from the spindle but has no holding screws?

  • @sejellis1864
    @sejellis1864 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you for the video. What do you do with glass door knobs that slip off - even when your screw is tightened? I'm guessing from what you said, the brass on the inside of the knob is stripped. Or, it may be the spindle that's worn out. Both look fine to me, but something is not right!

    • @selock
      @selock  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      sejellis most of the time the brass is stripped out inside and unfortunately not really repairable (of course I’ve seen numerous “fixes” like Teflon tape and such) but once it gets to a certain point they just have to be retired. Luckily in many cities there are “old house Depot salvage places” just make sure to check knobs before you purchase to avoid similar problems

    at 18:35 the you can see a "set screw" above the deadbolt. What is that for? Mine won't remove. How do I remove the key cylinder? Mine is stuck in the door and I can't get it apart to remove. Any suggestions?

    • @selock
      @selock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sounds like someone stripped the set screw out if it unscrews but just keeps unscrewing.
      You can try relieving pressure by backing the mounting screws of the mortise out (Phillips at top and bottom) but if the set screw unscrewed then stopped the cylinder may just be stuck in there. Try inserting a flat head that just fits the keyway and using it for leverage to “unscrew the cylinder” is my only advice

    • @selock
      @selock  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      but don’t try to “overforce” anything!

    Thanks for the video. I"m trying to repair my door that has baldwin levers on the inside and outside. The outside lever has started sagging where it leaves the door open. The levers have holes where I'd think a set screw would go, but they are way smaller than 1/8 of an inch, and don't look to have a set screw in there at all. Almost looks like a circlip type of thing is happening. Any idea how to get one of these levers off?

    • @selock
      @selock  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm that's unusual. You can certainly take a picture close up of where the shaft of the lever touches the plate and email it to us so I can try to identify what you have!
