    Just to clarify, you cannot become HCPC registered with an IBMS approved Biomedical Science degree alone. For HCPC registration, you will also need to complete the IBMS Certificate of Competence, which will take place within an IBMS accredited laboratory. Notably, these opportunities are limited and competitive, most people actually tend to work as MLA's to achieve this certificate by working their way up. Usually, the certificate takes about 12 months to complete. After you have been successful with your portfolio, you will then undergo practical and verbal assessments with an assessor from the IBMS, who will come into the laboratory you work in, to examine you. Overall, it is a lot of hoops to jump through. If becoming HCPC registered is your sole goal, then it is better to do a HCPC approved Healthcare Science degree instead, as these allow for HCPC registration upon graduation. However, it is important to be mindful that you do not learn the calibre of skills a Biomedical Science degree can offer, particularly towards private industries (E.g. Research). Healthcare Science is specific to, well... Healthcare, which is what the NHS is all about. Therefore, be sure of your preferences before commiting to either of these courses.

      I'm a bit confused towards the end, but your info was overall helpful! Thank you. My goal is to go into private research, and steer away from NHS eventually as obviously the pay isn't all too great. Would you suggest an IBMS degree? As it is focused more towards NHS?
      Also, if I was to lean towards Physician Associate (another interest), would IBMS accreditation matter? Thank youuu!

    • @jack7195
      @jack7195 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jasmine9215 what was you confused about? :) If you want to work in the NHS or private research, an IBMS Accredited Biomedical Science degree would be best. If you solely want to work in research for example, then any Biomedical Science degree would be useful. If your sole goal is to work in the NHS, then I think a HCPC approved Healthcare Science degree is the way to go. Any Biomedical Science degree, regardless of IBMS accreditation or not, would be beneficial for Physician Associate applications. I can inform you about the implications on Physician Associate studies as well, if you wish?

      @samanthabautista1655 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does this entails that even without IBMS portfolio i can still be registered in HCPC if my goal is just to work as a biomedical scientist that does not partake in any research related jobs?

    • @jack7195
      @jack7195 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@samanthabautista1655 Unfortunately not, sorry. If you want to become a Biomedical Scientist within the NHS, you need to become HCPC registered and the only way to do that is by doing an IBMS accredited Biomedical Science degree and the IBMS Certificate of Competence. The benefit from doing a Biomedical Science degree, particularly one that is IBMS accredited, is that you can partake in more research-based jobs, whereas Healthcare Science is quite limited to the NHS.

      Thank you for the clarification. I have a doubt regarding the hcpc registration. I have Bsc and Msc microbiology degree from India. Microbioligy comes under biomedical scientist category. So, do I want to do the IBMS competence, the traing for 1 year or can i register directly the current documents and information with HCPC to become a microbiologist.?

    We have more Biomed students working
    As Band 2 in NHS some have Masters but can't find Biomedical Scinetist Job. IBMS and HCPC Accreditation is good but it should be done before Student Graduate. Nursing students Graduate as Nurses , Radiography students Graduate as Radiographers but Biomedical Science students end up doing 2yrs searching for trainee post and another 1 Yr registration. To summarise we need More Funding to trainee Biomedical scientist students

    • @samihakhondoker2456
      @samihakhondoker2456 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      "it should be done before student graduate" and "we need more funding" true but not every student gets a chance for placement in every NHS labs around their region/area thats available due to limited number of students allowed in the lab to complete portfolio to become an actual biomedical scientist. I didn't get the chance so many other students who haven't had the chance in the first year to get in the healthcare science pathway which is basically the ability to get and complete placement for 1st, 2cnd and third year to complete the portfolio as they also study meaning they will have the certificate and the portoloio ready for jobs .Whereas for me I can apply next year but have to take a year out of uni between year 2/3 to complete it. And if I still can't get a chance then I think I should be allowed to have free training in the NHS labs to be a biomedical scientist as i didn't get an opportunity to do this in university due to high student competitiveness. Not everyone wants to do research.

    So with the IBMS guys you can go into a variety of career paths and all because the degree is aimed at nhs doesn’t mean you can’t go into research. Basically the nhs degree for biomed opens a lot more doors than the unaccredited. Mainly coz it’s broader with knowledge and even tho Russel group unis do not have IBMs doesn’t mean you should think about it. I know lots of people who have went to a Russel group uni and found it extremely hard getting a job. This is differs in some ways to the IBMS type degree. What I’m trying to say is doing the IBMS degree will still give you all the opportunities a non-accredited degree can. I would also just like to mention that the this women missed out Lancaster uni which is the highest ranking IBMS degree out all the IBMS other unis and Furthermore Lancaster uni is higher than nearly all Russel groups. It’s up to the same levels as York and they are both 6th in the uk. This is proven through the 2021 rankings of top unis in the uk. So just to clarify. The IBMS does offer a good range. Also people who aren’t on an accredited degree have to pay a lot of money for top up modules which are very expensive. Hope this helps

    *Yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!* I get the same question so often! And because the UK uses 'biomedical scientist' as synonym for 'medical lab technician or medical lab scientist', it makes it aaaaaaaall the more difficult to generalize! I can explain fairly from my own research on the net, but this video will now be the reference video that I will just link to if I get the question again :D Thanks, Atousa!

    What's the difference between biomedical scientist and clinical scientist (the NHS STP title)?

    • @mroosie7488
      @mroosie7488 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A clinical scientist is more involved with the interpretation of laboratory results and will have much more of a picture of the patient case. A biomedical scientist will carry out the tests, implement the quality control and report the findings. A clinical scientist is almost a bridge between the lab and the clinician and can give clinical advice. A clinical scientist will typically spend much less time in the lab than a BMS. Both routes require HCPC registration, but the clinical scientist will require an MSc obtained from an STP program. Biomedical Scientists can become clinical scientists through an equivalence route following successful completion of their Specialist diploma using their substantial experience. They can then work towards obtaining The FRCP to become consultant clinical scientists and are trained to the same level as doctors, but they don’t treat patients like medics.

    Is it easy to get your course IBMS accredited if you did your course in a Russell university?

    • @xyzuz1
      @xyzuz1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can’t ‘get’ your degree accredited. Only a few universities in the UK are accredited by the institute of biomedical science. Not all of them are russel group. Russel group means that it is research intensive and thats it - nothing more. If you go to an unaccreddited university just because you want a russel group, you will have to do extra years and extra modules after graduating in order to be accredited by the Institute of biomedical science and actually become a BMS. There are hundreds and thousands of qualified biomedical scientists in the uk and as long as your degree is accreddited it doesnt matter what uni you go to as the degree from the uni is heavily assessed and regulated by the INSTITUTE OF BIOMEDICAL SCIENCE. For example, my friends who went to manchester university studied there which is russel group but it is not accredited by the Institute of biomedical science as it is a research uni only so now they are struggling to find a job because their degree is not accredited nor accepted by many health professions in the UK. If they want to actually become a BMS, they HAVE to do top up modules and extra coursees or else they will not progress. Or, they can just do research. It is a very important topic lots of people dont even know about this.
