- The Clean performing Gentle Hour, as featured on the 2002 album 'Under the Influence -- 21 Years of Flying Nun Records'. This song is originally recorded by the New Zealand band Snapper (including Peter Gutteridge, who also performs in The Clean), released as a vinyl B-side off Snapper's single 'Vader', released in 1993. Later it was featured on Flying Nun's rarities album 'Where In The World Is Wendy Broccoli? In 2009 it was covered by Yo La Tengo for the 'Dark was the Night' compilation album.

@@pena.3302 The only thing I could find it on is a 2xCD compilation called "Under The Influence -21 Years of Flying Nun Records". I googled & found one that I purchased on eBay Australia. It is brilliant & worth the hunt. Cheers from America!
pride of the south / pride of new zealand / i was 12 in 1980 in NZ / so much talent in The Clean, Straightjacket Fits, The Verlaines, The Chills, Sneaky Feelings, Chris Knox... and more.

All three versions are brilliant and all have stood the test of time. Always tear up a bit after a few drinks when I hear them.
Because the Song is so Sincere...
Agreed but the Snapper original is untouchable
that guitar though. definitely makes this the best version.
The Clean and all of their South Island NZ offshoots have been a brilliant collective pop music delight for decades. David Kilgour continues to create wonderful and relevant songs, seek out his solo stuff as well.
I'm crying listening to this. So wonderful.
What a great song. Never get tired of hearing it. Never ever heard it on the radio here in nz. Commercial radio in nz is embarrassing beyond words
Commercial radio in general is bullshit, like why do Brits need to hear heart of glass 100 times every month. It's just symbolism bullshit
Absolutely beautiful. My favourite version too.
I Knew Peter.G/&,If You Like This,You May Like YO LA TANGO's Cover,Of(?)Another Peter G,Song,On The "Dark Was The Night'(Red Hot n Blue Comp)&,Also Peter's Version Of "Dont Catch Fire"(Toy Love/Chris Knox'-)COMPILATION;-"Stroke!..Plus Many Flying Nun Comp's,"TUATARA,"Pink Flying Saucer's OverThe Southern Alps!& There Are Many More."
Just discovering those band and just wow they are special. I did read of the passing of Hamish.
That photo is a brilliant capture 💔
30 years since first hearing the guys and I still seek them out :)

They are freaking ace !
I always come back to this song. I haven't listened to it in almost a year and it got stuck in my head today :)
great band the clean
best version
rip dear Peter
Sad :(
very sweet
beautiful .
Always come back to this. My favourite cover. The piano, guitar, lyrics.. oof
Damn fine
a sad loss
Love this song
The sound is more akin to the more recent chapters of David Kilgour's solo work.
this is a cover =Peter Gutteridge wrote this song..see the original , as done by Peters band =' Snapper-Gentle hour''
thank you for saying so! i love snapper too!
Given that Gutteridge played in musical collaborations with the Kilgour Bros and in the Clean I think you're making a moot point.
Still pretty excellent.....
Thank you! thank you!
THANK YOU!
I love these lyrics, so I can't help myself but relay them as I hear them (In answer to Hugo Zuniga below):
It's such a pleasure to touch your skin
touch your skin
It's such a pleasure to touch your heart
touch your heart
I can hardly breathe
I couldn't name you for fear
Of embarrassing you
You're in my mind all the time
all the time
all the time
And I've given you the hour
returning to the grave
And I couldn't have done
anything else
A gentle hour
A gentle hour
A gentle hour
A gentle hour
All the things that cause joy cause pain
It's such a pleasure to touch your skin
to touch your skin
It's such a pleasure to touch your heart
touch your heart
I can hardly breathe
I can hardly breathe
And I've given you the hour
returning to the grave
a gentle hour
a gentle hour
a gentle hour
a gentle hour
dis sum gud shiiit!!!
likeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Super.re ok
Can someone tell me the lyrics of this song please, im not a native english speaker.
They are much darker lyrics than you might realise.
what CD is this from ?
Under the Influence - 21 Years of Flying Nun Records - by various artists. 2002 FNCD 021.
Yo La Tengo made it so much better I think.
Snapper does the best one, and it's the original.
Nah man it’s a nice cover, but the reason they covered it at all makes this still the best
The yo La Tengo cover is my fav song of all time. Hands down their cover brings an ethereal element to it.
